THE problem with far-reaching five-year plans is that at some stage they come back to bite you. Terry Wallace was roundly mocked for his constant references to long-term plans at Richmond, so much so that he still jokes about it now.

Mod note: I realise the HUN has made us sign up to read articles like this, but the same rules apply as they did before. It's free to sign up for now so reading the article should not be a problem for anyone. Due to legal reasons, please stick to the current guidelines for posting of online articles - ie a link to the article and the first paragraph. Regardless of whether we agree or disagree with the HUN's decision, it is their content and not ours. Thanks - tugga

I can't see this article because I have not signed up. I see no reason to sign up as I do not intend to pay to see their articles.

I suggest we just have an unwritten board policy not to link to any HSUN articles at all in future... just my 2c.

This is some of the insightful stuff you will miss-

A quick straw poll of the Herald Sun football writers yesterday drew a consensus: Richmond are absolutely no chance to make the finals this year.

''They are kidding themselves,'' was one retort.

''We get this hype about Richmond in March every year,'' was another.

Quality stuff.

Ralphy needs to read a dictionary and learn the difference between a goal and a declaration.

The HS get all their info from press conferences, Big footy or thin air, so as long as you watch press conferences you'll get the truth. Boycott their dribble.

yet he spends 2/3 of the article painting a picture to suggest finals is not out of the question this year. at least adopt a view and follow it through ralph.

It's was always going to be a long haul.

We can still have large amounts of improvement and be on the right track this year ... and not make finals. Especially with the disparity in the ease of the draw, compared to the other teams who will also be competing for the lower part of the eight.

I've long held that our progress, if on the right track, should follow this time-line.

  • 2010 - avoid the spoon - tick
  • 2011 - out of bottom 4 - tick
  • 2012 - in the mix for finals
  • 2013 - make the 8
  • 2014 - make the 8
  • 2015 - top 4

As such if we demonstrate progress but don't make finals I will still think we're headed in the right direction.

Pretty reasonable timeline really, would love to sneak in this year though, with a bit of luck a few things may swing our way

Of course we shoulkd make the eight.... This is the third pre-season under DH. Third pre-season learning a game plan with our core group of players, a group of players that have not lost any players of any huge talent since DH arrived. The rebuild by now SHOULD have us above average. No excuses.

In no logical order ----

We have a Coleman medalist- Reiwoldt

A player that managed to get 15 Brownlow votes after his first full pre-season and a Best and Fairest, a player who I think will be our best midfielder of all time and maybe over all.- Cotchin

2 x B&F winner and number 1 draft choice, a player with that talant to be our best player -Deledio

A player that can take the game on like I haven't seen in a Richmond player ever... and could well be better than Cotchin!!! - Martin

A player that was basically best on ground for the Vics last time they played, fit and firing after 2 years of injuries- Foley

These are our A and A+ graders ...

We have to get threw our heads that we need to demand success.... stop hoping.

WE WILL MAKE THE EIGHT....

unless we get smashed with injuries..

It's only the Herald Sun that has the pay wall, lads, so perhaps put this link in the OP instead. :thumbsu: :)

Used to always used the Herald Sun Superfooty, but no longer, headed north to the Banana Benders Superfooty. :D

Wont be long before the HUN ties up all the loopholes. Im the same, will give them the flick. Have to pay to see pre-season games, now to read basic footy articles. Sucks big time where all this is heading.

I don't mind the NAB Cup thing. Fox Footy is a premium subscription channel and pre-season games never got the ratings free tv wanted.

Definitely don't like the HUN thing though when bugger all of the stories on the HUN website are things you couldnt find elsewhere and then the exclusive opinions are no better than The Age, Sportal, or often simply what an average fan can write on BigFooty.

what a really inane bit of writing. Its not even internally consistent.

He throws out the 'we hear this from Richmond every March" line.. a paragraph after he's extensively explained that Richmond are trying very hard to play down any expectations at all.. and then follows it up with HIM raising expectations for the rest of hte article..which will inevtabley turn, in some twisted way, into evidence "Richmond are doing it again"!

If he wants to write a season preview on RFC, why not just write one. If the only 'angle' he can concoct to disguise the fact his analysis is utterly mundane is "Richmond are afraid of their own target but Richmond are getting ahead of themselves"... then, my friends, we have a failure of essay writing 101.

Dissapointing effort given the potentially interesting subject matter. I give it a D-minus.

Don't get me wrong I'd love it too, but it's not necessarily all doom and gloom if we don't.:thumbsu:

Yeah I wont be pulling my hair out if we don't make finals (although I will be every time we lose a match, just can't help it)

The sooner the Herald Sun dies the better journalism would instantly become in this country. Sports wise, News wise, morally and politically.

The only thing based on fact from the Herald Sun is the price.

Nobody with half a brain will pay for made up stories online.
