Hard to believe it's almost 2 decades since the "Teams of the Century" came out. They were basically all time teams for the VFL/AFL clubs. Would be interesting to revise ours, now that we have a premiership and I believe we have a couple of elite, all time players, in our team.

Who would be in/out for you at selection?

The original Richmond team in 2000 was:

B - Kevin Sheedy - Vic Thorp - Michael Green
HB- Basil McCormack - Gordon Strang - Mervyn Keane
C- Francis Bourke - Bill Barrott - Dick Clay
HF - Matthew Richardson - Royce Hart - Roger Dean
F - Dale Weightman - Jack Titus - Bill Morris
R - Roy Wright - Jack Dyer - Kevin Bartlett

I/C - Ian Stewart - Des Rowe - Geoff Raines - Matthew Knights

Obvious inclusions are
Rance
Martin
Cotchin
Not sure about Riewoldt

Only being 35 I wasnt around to see any of those play so dont know who they replace as I dont know how good some of those players were.

Geoff Raines was great for 4-5 years, but then he followed the money and defected to Collingwood. I think he comes out for Cotch.

The one who has always interested me (in terms of missing out) is Dick Harris. His record is phenomenal. 3x club leading goalkicker (as a small forward - he played the same era as Jack Titus), 1 x league-leading goalkicker, BOG in 1943 GF (kicked 7 goals out of 12). He's still kicked more goals than Jack Riewoldt (in fewer games).

I think Roger Dean probably deserves to be in the team - he was hugely important as our captain in the late 60s. However, he could also play half-back, back-pocket (he was the original 'Back-Pocket plumber'). Des Rowe was a captain of the club, 2x B&F (in out Top-3 every year from 1950-56), so he could also play HBF, back-pocket.

So, based on my reading of history, and my vast experience of playing football (captain of school 3rd XVIII, and 2 years playing scared forward pocket in the SE Churches Div 2), I would probably put Harris in the team, shuffle around Dean and Rowe, and that means Merv Keane misses out.

I'll wait until Cotchin and Martin retire, before I decide which of them (or both) get in. They are possible replacements for Knights and Barrot.

I don't think Rance is an automatic, when you look at the records of Strang and Thorp. It's a fun discussion, with no right or wrong answer. Of course, Rance could also play on smaller forwards if required.

Showing how the game has changed - this team has 3 ruckmen in it - we won our last flag with one.

I'd replace Barrott with Maurice...Dean with Cotch...Rowe with Dusty...Titus with Reiwoldt...Strang with Rance...McCormack with Lids...Sheedy with Morris

Okay...

And
Sheedy went to Ess. OUT
Rance IN

And Ian Stewart was great but could come OUT for Dusty. Both won 1 flag and 1 brownlow at Richmond. Dusty the 1 club player.
&
stating the obvious Jack Graham IN for KB.

Rance into the back pocket, Green (resting ruckman) onto the bench. Des Rowe out.
Dusty in for Knighta.
Cotch pushes out Ian Stewart, who played only 78 games.
Sadly, Maurice didn't make the original side, so I don't think he can be included now. I think we can only add players from 2000 onwards.
If we were looking to remove one of the 3 ruckman, I would squeeze out Bill Morris for Jack. Jack Riewoldt that is.

Like Knighta...elite player playing when we were very ordinary...too many skills to be left out...same as maurice too good more consistent player than Barrott...
Green was a terrific marking tall ruck...big man taking marks around the ground is a weapon...
Stewart was elite...won a brownlow with us making a total of 3...he stays...cotch replaces Woger who was tough but cotch has more versatility...
I'd like Sheedy out too...tough player but a tad slow...not sure who with though...maybe Morris/Malthouse/Bowden/Kellaway?!?...

Sheedy stays IMO. Back pocket who developed his game to become a creative mid. Had there been a Norm Smith Medal in 1973, he probably would have won it. 3 goals in the 1st quarter & pivotal in our 1974 triumph. I absolutely loved Ian Stewart & it would be a brave call to replace him, but I only do so on the back of his small tally of 78 games. Roger was the heartbeat of the club before 1967 & deserves his spot. Can also go back as well. Green's 1969 finals series was sensational beating Polly Farmer, Len Thompson & John Nicholls. He retired early after 1971 for his law practice, but after we lost the 72 GF, he was coaxed back to star in 73 & 74. Must stay. I get what you are saying about Barrot. I guess the romance of the Bourke Barrot Clay centreline was too good to pass up, but he was a big game player. He also stays IMO.

If Dusty retired today he would push out half the team based on his record already.

I'm thinking Wood for Clay as well...i like a team that is fast and is more consistent/versatile than get ball and kick it long...
Woger too old school for my liking..better and more skilled players than tuff ol' wogger...petered out after '67...
Sheeds would be too slow these days against modern mids...knighta would leave him for dead...but in the back pocket their are no resting rovers to molest for sheeds these days...and maybe not tall enough to play tall and small like Grimes...sheeds would have to knock Betts out to keep up with Betts..then he'd be reported...no value in that!

You can't pick a player with today's standards in mind. These teams were never done with that in mind. Pick players that were outstanding in their own time. Today's players are much more versatile & are expected to cover much more ground than previous generations. There are literally 1000's of arguments we could have & it's all subjective. Let's keep it on the romantic level that it belongs.

Strike me down for saying it but reality is Maurice had 3 very good seasons , the rest was so so . That’s nowhere near enough to be included
Martin, rance cotch and Riewoldt would all be included .
Green, Sheedy, OUT , Raines possibly out, I don’t know enough about credentials of other defenders like McCormack and thorp
