Why do certain posters on this board keep persisting with them?

We are 11th - yes, 11th - how can anybody possibly accurately predict what we are going to do next week, let alone for the last 11 games of the season and assume we are going to make finals?

It's fairly embarrassing, not to mention lame. The sooner most of our supporters reliase the position we are in as a club, as one still trying to get back on it's feet and go places, the sooner we can all move forward successfully. Aim high, yes, but I'm sure the players, coaches & staff at EFC aren't thinking finals and premierships at this stage. The more some delude themselves with grand visions of ultimate success in 2009 the further away we get from moving forward.

We'll no doubt win a few more games for the rest of the year but let's all try to maintain a little perspective about where we are going, in the longer term, rather than 2009. The feeling is a lot of people were getting way too ahead of themselves prior to the Geelong game, and the last two weeks have given us the wake-up call the club has needed, in my point of view. A work-in-progress.

Rubbish thread.

Most of us have hopes and dreams that things can turn around quickly. The AFL system is all about that. The fact that we are one game away from top 4 tells you something.

Take your pessimistic we'll be good in the long term approach somewhere else please. It's lame and embarrassing.

Me, I want to play finals this year and I think we can. We'll beat Melbourne, no reason why we can't beat the Blues and Pies again with a team starting to resemble close to our best.

Once again.. ridiculous and embarrassing thread. Please close Mods.

What kelvin said.

It's easy to say "we're 11th", but when you look at that in context, it means SFA.

11 rounds in, there's obviously going to be discrepancies between fixtures so far.

Carlton have are one game ahead of us, but are yet to play St Kilda or Geelong.

Collingwood will be one game ahead of us by tonight, but have played Melbourne twice.

The fact is, if we beat Melbourne and Carlton (both very winnable games), we'll be 7-6, and sitting in the eight after 13 rounds.

Agree with Kelvin ().

Add to that, you speak as if the attitude of us supporters has ANY baring on the performance of the team/club in the short or the long term ("The more some delude themselves with grand visions of ultimate success in 2009 the further away we get from moving forward").

We will either make it or not make it -- our own personal attitudes won't make one tiny bit of difference.

Fair enough.

I can see both sides of the coin, I just don't share the absolute complete optimism that some do that everything is going to fall into place to make the 8. Still a lot of better sides out there, as we saw yesterday. As I said, absolutely everything is going to have to fall into place to get there. People seem to be putting Carlton & Collingwood down as certain victories, but they are going to be far from it.

I am struggling to see the relationship between posts on BF and the future success of the Essendon Football Club. Is it just me?

I think one of us is Matthew Knights in disguise. It's the only possible way.;)

I am going out on a limb, and agreeing with the opening post. We're very close to a finals side, but we won't play finals. Why? Has anyone had a look at our whole draw? People keep saying "We can beat Melbourne, Carlton, Collingwood in the next 3 weeks and we're 8-6 and anything can happen." Keep looking. We'd then have to win 4 more games. Brisbane in Melbourne is our best chance. We then have 2 trips to Perth (Not great sides but we are embarrassing away from home), St. Kilda, Hawthorn..it is a very difficult run, so even if we play some brilliant footy and win the next 3, we'd have to steal some big wins to sneak in the 8. This is not a dig at the team, but more at some posters, be a bit more realistic and look at the big picture.

The OP is onto something. One week at a time.

Big footy may not be a direct conduit to the players but publicly known support expectation does have a bearing on team performance.

Don't want to end up like Collingwood.

Agree!

Doesn't matter, who here would have seriously thought we would beat Hawthorn at the start of the year? along with Carlton and Richmond?

My point is anything can happen, we go play those guys doesn't mean a lose. Especially with players still to come back.

Mate, this is football. Nothing is a certainty. We're just 1 game and percentage off 4th spot.

some idiot 2-3 weeks ago was referring to us as a top 4 side ... just because we are in the top4 (at that stage) does not make us a top 4 side.

moron whoever that was
hint: if all else fails, say it was bombersno1

Ok i'll come clean... it's me!!!

I'll make sure we win this week (purely because of this thread). After that I make no promises.

clause: if for some reason we don't win this week... it was bombersno1's fault :p

Every Essendon fan did. We always go into the big showdowns with the rival teams with a realistic chance. We're very good at playing the "underdog" role. But it just proves your point, anything can happen.

Don't listen when she says we should tank.

Real Essendon supporters want to win.:thumbsu:

Also, if we had drafted Daniel Rich instead of an injury riddled Hurley and Zaka, we would be top 4, bookmark it!! :p

I think most of us have arealistic idea where we are at. But it's hard not to ride the highs and lows without getting carried away a little. Especially when we see how good we can be, then back it up with shockers.
I think on a whole though, our bad games, are not as bad as our bad games last season, and thats not bad.

This is easily the stupidest part of the post. No one is being silly and calling for a '09 flag, but you can be sure that everyone at the club is aiming at finals and anything less will be a dissapointment.

The only issue I have with Daniel Rich is whether he'll be able to maintain this peak of his throughout his career. I don't think theres much improvement left in his game. I'm quite happy with Hurley over Rich though as it was our backline that needed some bolstering in preparation for Fletcher's swansong.

No one expects the Bombers to win the flag this year.

And TBH, I don't overly expect to play finals in '09 either.

However, as realistic as you want to be...

2008 Round 11 - 2 wins, 9 losses.

2009 Round 11 - 5 wins, 6 losses.

'Nuff said.

We went into the second half of Season 2008 really well, and managed to win 6 more games, 4 on the trot after Round 11. Carlton was one of them, we defeated them as underdogs for the second time in the year.

If we can go into the second half & win 6 games while being 2-9 & injury depleted, we can do even better this year.

There is no reason why we can't. In fact, I'd expect us to beat our record with the team we have now. And if that happens... well, aim for the sky I say. :thumbsu:
