The Port Adelaide Football Club is saddened at the passing of four-time premiership player and club Hall of Fame member Jeff Potter.
A talented rover in his playing days, Potter pulled on the Port Adelaide guernsey in 235 games at SANFL level between 1959 and 1970, kicking 289 goals.

He was part of the 1959 premiership team which completed an Australian record six premierships in-a-row, before winning three premierships in the 1960s.
Potter’s playing record includes four best and fairest awards (1961, 1964, 1967 and 1969), 23 state games for South Australia and the club’s leading goal kicker title in 1964, while he was club vice-captain in 1968.
Following his playing career, he coached the club’s reserves side, was a league selector and helped run the footballer’s club licenced venue.
Potter is an inductee of the South Australian Football Hall of Fame and the Port Adelaide Football Club Hall of Fame, and was named on the interchange in Port Adelaide’s Greatest Team 1870-2000.
In 2019 he was also part of the 1962, 1963 and 1965 premiership sides which were inducted into the Port Adelaide Football Club Hall of Fame in the teams category.

Just a smidge before my time to recollect seeing play regularly but a great name of the Port Adelaide Football Club who served with distinction over many years.

Vale Jeff.

Yes, I was lucky enough to score his bottle top in my recess time Fanta when I was a youngun.

A real footballer who oozed toughness and team play selfless and not ego driven, I have been privileged to have watched him play his no prisoners style on many occasions and our club reaped the rewards of his relentless efforts. RIP JEFF POTTER and thanks for the numerous memories.:weary:

An old fashioned rover, less rounded than Bubbles Obst but still solid built with strong legs.
Can just remember the 65 win over Sturt with him playing a significant part in the victory.
R.I.P Jeff

Yet another of the Port Adelaide greats has passed away. Jeff Potter was probably the reason the SANFL introduced the out of bounds on the full rule. Potts had the uncanny knack of kicking high floating punts along the boundary line in an effort to eat up time in close games. The ball would hang in the air and drift out of bounds for a throw in. Potts had it down to an art form. The irony is that given the chance Potts was not a bad exponent of the drop kick. I vividly remember him drop kicking the opening goal on the run in the 1963 Grand Final against North Adelaide.

Recruited from Mt Gambier as a replacement for Fos Williams, Potts was spotted by Port ruckman Peter Marrett. Jeff Potter played 235 Games for Port between 1959 and 1970 and kicked 289 goals. Fos Williams named Jeff Potter is his All Time Port Adelaide Side (1950-1973).

I got to know Potts reasonably well when he worked at the Port Club through the nineties. After footy he had a keen interest in trotters.

Emu Philp passed away a few weeks back and now Jeff Potter is gone.

RIP Potts.

Very informative post, just before my time as I can only remember the 65 finals just.
Definitely remember Jeff playing, was typical Port through and through.
Unfortunately these names only now come up when they have passed on but there memories remain forever.

Yep, I can remember the kicks from the back lines that hugged the boundary line for quite a distance before going out of bounds and today he would have been pinged for out on the full. Back in his day it would have been a throw in. And you are right it was a great time waster.
Wasn’t he #21

Another one of the legends gone.

Vale Jeff Potter.

It wont be long, maybe a decade, and all of the blokes that won those 9 flags under Fos and the 1 under Mots will be gone. The youngest one of them would be around 78 or 80.

Geoff Motley and Neville Hayes both debuted as 18 year olds in 1953, won their first flag in 1954 and both passed away in 2023, 3 months apart and both were 88. Jeff Potter was 83.

I reckon I only have heard him speak once in an interview on radio but have read plenty about him. Thanks for posting that video of him on SA Sports Show Festerz.
