The courage of these men...

SEAN Wight, who starred for the Demons alongside fellow Irishman Jim Stynes, has died of lung cancer. Wight, 47, died this morning at the Freemasons Hospital, his family has confirmed.
The Scots-born Irishman told the Herald Sun in May of the shock of discovering he had lung cancer, having enjoyed a ground-breaking AFL career built on extraordinary athleticism and skill.
"I remember thinking 'Wow, here I am, 46, I've never smoked, never really drunk, and I've got lung cancer," he told Mike Sheahan.
Wight and Jim Stynes were the headline acts of Melbourne's audacious Irish recruiting program in the 1980s.

Sad news. A dour footballer who helped deliver the Irish dream to AFL.
RIP

He was the most underrated player of his era, was a very humble and quiet achiever but was a vital part of some of those very good Melbourne teams,
Like his fellow comrade Jimmy, was courageous beyond belief.
One of the genuinely decent gentlemen of football and I think it is somewhat sad he probably never knew in how much esteem he was held.
Name me one footy player/coach official or fan who had a bad word to say about Sean Wight ?

RIP Sean, you shall never be forgotten

Yeah, RIP dear Sean.

I loved watching Sean through those heady days and grew a liking for him as I had for Stynes.
For one that doesn't like to judge a person by their race etc. I always found my softest spots were somehow reserved for the Irish that played our game.
Nothing's changed then I guess.

We've lost a good one today. Cheers Sean. :thumbsu:

We wouldn't have Carlos or Zach at the club if it wasn't for the success of Sean and Jimmy.
People forget how hard it was for those two trail blazers to adjust to Australian culture and footy, and our game is far richer for the Irish experiment, I mourn his death and also I celebrate his life and incredible achievements in our great game.

I don't think I can imagine just how hard it must have been to be part of such an experiment.
Those guys accepted the challenges asked of them and then flourished within the system.

I think your last line can only be reserved for a few when it's all said and done, but you're right.
We can mourn his death whilst celebrating his life at the same time.
Then again that may just be befitting for an Irishman.

You can like a player and then you can wish he was on your team - there are very few players who meet both criteria. He was one of them. A real loss to football.

RIP.

R. I. P Sean he should have played for Carlton back in the 80s had a mo would have fit well with Buckley,Hunter,Harmes,Perovic,Jones,Doull etc.

I remember the name, but I may be the only one in this thread who doesn't remember much about him as a player. From everything I have heard though, he sounds like a top bloke. Very sad when anyone is taken at such a young age. RIP.
