eyes only for the ball, couldnt move left cos the adel players was pushing him and the umpire fell over is foot..

couldnt believe it when they said he was fined for it... its an absoulte joke, just to go on top of one of the worse umpired games in history!..

Rivers to contest charge

Rivers will contest the fine at the tribunal...

JARED Rivers has chosen to contest his fine for making negligent contact with an umpire.
The match review panel yesterday fined him $1950 for making contact with umpire Justin Schmitt during the third quarter of Melbourne's loss to Adelaide on Sunday.
He risks increasing the fine to $2600 if he's unsuccessful in his appeal at the tribunal this evening.

Should be thrown out imo

The whole thing is becoming a joke players are getting fined for accidentally making contact with umpires,

But on the weekend 2 players made deliberate contact with umpires but they get no fines.

The AFL Tribunal has found Melbourne defender Jared Rivers guilty of negligent umpire contact.
Rivers received a $2,600 fine after he clipped feet with field umpire Justin Schmitt in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to Adelaide at the MCG.
Rivers testified that Schmitt had backed away from a bounce at a slight angle and this caused the umpire to make contact with him.
"As a defender, I don’t see how I could have done anything differently," Rivers said.
But Rivers became the latest player to be penalised under an AFL crackdown this season on players who make contact with an umpire after the ball is bounced.
There was no argument that Schmitt backed away at an angle but the jury decided that Rivers was close enough to warrant the negligent finding.
"It’s because there might be harm that (players) have this duty to avoid contact," tribunal advocate Jeff Gleeson said in his summing up.
"He (Rivers) is very, very close to setting up behind the umpire."

Would like to see some footage of the incident.

sorry for the intrusion here fella's,

but I agree with all of you it's complete crap that you can get fined almost 2 grand, for a ******** umpire's mistake. Umpires and tribunal are just becoming a joke! Your guy was really unlucky and rightly should contest it.

It's not hard for an umpire to back out into a gap. When I umpired junior footy i' basically wave where I was gonna back out. It's really not hard. And if the players are stationary..what is this protecting the umpire from. Sounds like there is one rule with no exeptions. The rules committee is a joke..couldn't believe Kevin Bartletts comments about rubbishing Judd and Harley's opinons on the push in the side incident. Richo shares the same view and put it well, you need to capture the spirit of the game in both cases. Who appoints the rules committee?

The AFL’s legal counsel, Jeff Gleeson, said the umpire had backed away from the bounce in a straight line. But he said that even if he had deviated slightly, Rivers was aware of the rules and knew his obligation to show a duty of care to the umpire.

To say that he [the umpire] might come back in a perfectly straight line is requiring too much of the umpires,” Gleeson said

Just read after posting...and this amazes me...Backing out on slight angle into space- Difficulty 0.1/10. What a piss weak excuse. I don't blame the umpires I blame the rules committee for deteriorating our game in the last 5 years especially.

sorry, but no one apart from this board was talking about this, and i had to put my ten cents in..

i believe its totally disgusting that rivers got fined for this.. i saw the replay on foxsports (that i believe they are talking about in relation to umpire contact), and he had his eyes only for the ball.. if there excuse is, he's in the umpires way when backing up from a bouncedown..

then shouldnt the forward been the one thats in trouble for going in that position

Why is there rules in place to 'protect' umpires. Have they never fallen over in their lives? Are they that precious that they cant manage to get up off the deck once they trip over?

I agree that players should not touch them. But when its accidental contact, wave your arms and play on!

I think they need to remember that the game revolves around the players, not them. Roles should be reversed; Umpire makes contact with a player they get fined.

People are getting way too f*cking precious these days. Load of bulls*it.

No feel for the game at all. Disgusting decision. I hope that the money goes to charity and not back into the twits' hands who make these decisions.

Gee, that is a pathetic decision. I can't believe the AFL hasn't come under serious fire from important people yet for this umpiring crap. I guess it's the threat of a $5k fine each time you say anything bad about them.

They keep saying that they need to attract people to the umpiring profession, which is currently looked upon with disrespect. Perhaps people would think better of umpires if they weren't asked to adjudicate ridiculous rules, and weren't protected to the point that in a stoppage with a pack of 30 players, if they accidently trip over someone they get fined thousands of dollars.

I'd be embarassed to be an AFL umpire at the moment.

Absolutely woeful decision.

If they want enough space to back away at whatever angle they choose, make it a 3m exclusion zone on the side he's backing out to, and the first player that moves into that space gets penalised (by one of the other 15 umpires they've got out there).

As a defender, as soon as you're opponent moves to that position you need to be goalside of him, and in contact with him. It's not an option for Rivers to say, "hmm, if the umpire backs out on a 45 degree angle he'll get near me, so I won't pick my man up for this bounce".

This is f*cking ridiculous. I always thought Umpires were against us but this has definetly taken the cake. This is the worst decision ever, how the f*ck do you get fined for that? What other choice did he have? It was the umpires fault more then anyone. These umpires are f*cking weak as piss!

Least he doesn't miss any games...right?
