Robert Pickton was convicted of killing 6 women but he more than likely killed almost 50 on his pig farm. This occurred not too far from where I live in an area called Port Coquitlam in Greater Vancouver. Most of his victims were prostitutes or homeless women from downtown.

I must admit I had never heard of this case before I read about it here.

Considering the number of women he killed, it seems a little surprising that it hasn't received greater publicity outside of Canada.

Anyway, apparently the findings of a long inquiry into the whole thing will be released on December 17- so Tuesday morning our time.

It seems to have raised a lot of questions about the incompetence, and indifference, of Vancouver police at the time, especially where cases of missing prostitutes and drug users were concerned.

A couple of good (read: ghastly) reads concerning the case and its background:

http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/death-farm/Content?oid=16079

The first one gives a particularly detailed background, including the black hole that is the Downtown Eastside part of Vancouver.

This story doesn't seem to be garnering much interest here.

Nonetheless, the inquiry I mentioned in the above post has now been released. A couple articles on it below:

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/...s-bias-against-victims-led-to-police-failures

No surprises I suppose, but it does underline the deep seated apathy that existed, and probably still exists, towards prostitutes and the Downtown Eastside area in general.

Also highlights how the lack of police co-ordination across greater Vancouver allowed Pickton to escape undetected for so long.

No, no death penalty in Canada.

I thought I remembered this case getting coverage in Australia when I was there. Maybe I was wrong. This case was a big stuff up by police. I don't think it's so much that people don't care about drug addicts or prostitutes, but they are living a high risk lifestyle. They tend to die suddenly or go missing more often than others. And, unfortunately, they often don't have anybody that would miss them.

Terrible case though. Doubt he'll ever be released.
