Robert Walls makes sense???

I really dont have much time for the bloke and he normally talks crapola but i agree with what he has written here.

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/chasing-their-tails/2007/04/27/1177459978544.html

"After a decade or more of playing in ordinary teams"......who were put together by very ordinary coaches, aint that right sheeds?

Cant believe this mapa is looked upon as an "expert".

Classic dip stick comment, "The Tigers gave up a third-round pick in last year's draft for Graham Polak. It is a big risk." So Robert you moronian, how did you work that one out and what happens when you dont take risks, you stupid fool.

Man, Sheeds isnt wrong is he, how did you get the mantle of "expert"? ;)

No that didnt make sense for one massive reason and shows Walls' inadequacies yet again.

He didnt mention Nathan Foley once.

Of course there is the undue go at Tambling since it's really only his second year in the system, his first year was injury riddled.

How can Polak not be worth a 3rd rounder. Got me beat.

And Kent Kingsley? Well it was the pre-season draft, it barely matters.

Thank god someone stuck the boot into Krak though. +1 Wallsy.

Brought to you by the man who traded for Wayne Thornborrow, Trent Nicholls, Robert Powell, Ben Holland and Ben Harrison. Broke the bank on Gaspar.

you forgot the next big thing, as he was touted by the "expert", Manfield.
ANd the Brissy lions thought they had the good ones, Bwahaaahaa, naaa, Walls knew who the good ones were Lions, see? ;)

Truth is that Richmond is a club that can't handle critical comment....either at a club or supporter level. Walls' article is really quite mild. He could have had a crack at our pathetic approach to recruitment & player development over the past five years. Our willingness too often to go for a quick fix & select second-best recycled players rather than taking a longer-term approach and selecting & developing youth. And he didn't mention the unwillingness of those in charge of the football department to take any responsibility for their actions!

Wallsy is a tosser and wasnt great at Richmond, but the article wasnt about him.

I thought his key points were pretty spot on and also fair and not vindictive/stupid like one G.Lyons.

On Richo and J.Bowden
Joel Bowden and Matthew Richardson, the sons of Richmond premiership players, can't do any more. The likelihood is that they won't emulate their fathers' feats. Between them, they have played 455 games for the yellow and black, but only six of those have been finals.
After a decade or more of playing in ordinary teams, these two gifted players have developed some loose habits as they try to push themselves and teammates to greater heights. Frustration can kick in. From here on, their form will gradually decline as age wearies them.
sad but true

Comments on Johnson and Gas :thumbsu: agree 100%

Nathan Brown and Cogs - Two of our very best players, I have both hope and real concerns for them.

Tambling
There is hope for the lightly framed Tambling, as this is only his third year in the system. At the moment he, too, easily gets pushed aside in heavy traffic. A commitment to build strength and size could allow him to survive at senior level, but at present he is not the game-breaker it was hoped he would be.
I dont think this is particularly harsh, it would be great if our team even looked as tough and fit as a West Coast.

Krak
It's not good enough.
:thumbsu:

Lids
Coach Wallace has given the young gun exposure to a variety of positions, but the time has come to play him as the No. 1 midfielder.
Does anyone not want to see him play on the best, in the guts, most of the time?

A crack at Judd or Daniel Kerr today would be an ideal challenge.
:thumbsu:

Polak, we did take a risk (knowing his off and on field problems) but we did get him to play KP back and hopefully replace a Gaspar or free up Bowden. Lets just play him back and he does what we got him for or he doesnt.

And Kent Kingsley: why, oh why Kent Kingsley?

At Richmond, where funds aren't flush, is it so important to teach and develop the talent you have. Have the Tigers done this? Who is being schooled to be a top-line 200-gamer? Yes: Andrew Raines and Deledio. Maybe: Tambling, Jay Schulz and Chris Newman. Unlikely: Pettifer, Patrick Bowden, Shane Tuck, Krakouer and a host of others. But what the Tigers do have is youth. Eighteen players on the list are 21 or younger. They will take time.

Surprisingly good write up i thought :thumbsu:

He wasn't just critical, but gratuitously negative.
Seems the Tiges are an easy target for anyone in the media who wants to take a cheap shot!

Agree. I reckon Walls is quite a good judge - unlike others in the media he calls a spade a spade and can be quite rightly critical - he has given my club a bagging over the years -a lot of it wholly justified.
However also reckon that despite this tag, he is soft in his criticism of Richmond - perhap understandable given he has the link to them. I would actually say that this article is probably the most critical he has ever been about the Tigers.

Read the article and there are both truths and fables in it.

Truths:

1. Deledio should be our number 1 onballer.
2. Older player segment is substantially correct.
3. Krakouer having had plenty of chances without producing consistently enough.

All excellent points.

Fables:

1. Young players. No real analysis done on his part, IMO he accepted what the club says about our youngsters is accurate.
2. Polak for 3rd round pick. Far too early and indications are he is well worth a 3rd round pick.

Overall the article is not too far off the mark it just does not ge into enough depth of the problems with our list at the moment. The gist of the article suggests we will have to keep waiting .... how long is enough time to wait?

One thing which I don't understand and which came out of this article was the almost total disregard of Tuck that a lot of the commentators have. I don't see a huge amount of Richmond games but he is usually among the better players, is fairly young and looks pretty promising. Admittedly he had a down year last year but the year before was excellent and this year from what I have seen he has been good. Perhaps you guys could explain to me where the disdain comes from.

Cheers.

I know what you mean. Had an oridanry start for the year and but had a great game last week. Tuck is hardly a player with alot of class, rather he just gets his own footy from the centre and just throws it on his boot hoping a foward would get it onto it.

He is 25 and will be 26 before the 2008 season begins. Because he was drafed by the Tigers after being discarded from the Hawks he hasn't played alot of footy. In fact he has only played 51 games which is hard to believe because he seems to have been in the system more then just a bit over two years

Has only average 21.8 disposals a game in 2007 at about 75% efficency. Still seen by most clubs us our best midfielder. He would be alot better if Cogs was in the side to help him our or if Johnson fired. Being 25 it will be almost impossible for him to play 200 games but never-the-less will be on our list for at least the next 2-3 years on merit

i agree cmon wallsy fire up we need someone in the media to rip the blinkers of the blind.
just on polak when you consider his previous playing record it was a huge risk still is for that matter. giving up any chance on getting riewoldt and pick 42 before the draft began. riewoldt slipped thank god. finally tiger fans are going to be bitterly disappointed if wallace ever plays polak back.

1. Deledio should be our number 1 onballer.

No He shouldnt. No 20 year old should be the no.1 midfielder at any club. He is played of HBF to protect him from that undue pressure. There is no other team that'll rely on 20 year old to be the best midfielder. Even if he is the no.1 draft pick.

If cogs wasnt injured Deledio would be in the centre.

agree develop the kids with pace and skill at hb let them be the hunter because the time will come soon enough when they will always be the hunted.

Robert Walls was spot on with everything he said in that article. And it was about time an article like that was written. Lyon wrote one a few weeks ago too.

Richmond have been massively disappointing so far this year. In the preseason and so far in the rounds.

Richo & Bowden are a disappointment.
Tambling and Delidio are underperforming.
Nathan Brown may never play again, let alone play well.
Kane Johnson is an ordinary captain.
Krak is not up to it.
Gaspar is finished.
Kent Kingsley - why did we bother with this hack?

On top of this, our young players are not coming along. Raines, Polo, Patterson, Meyer, Schulz are all underperforming.

Things are not looking good for the Tigers...so far.

The whole article reeks of someone that hasn't done his research.
Ummm what can i write about? How can i stir the pot? Any cheap targets?

Walls is always having a go at players, teams, coaches.
He is often made to look silly shortly there after.

I have watched every Richmond game this year and think we've played pretty well. We should have won at least 2 games.

I see the kids improving. I see the older duds looking like they are nearly done.

The side is improving. I think the future is bright. Robert Walls credibilty is not.... and other than as a Player he didn't have a lot to begin with.

Why does he not rate Tuck? That's the one thing that annoyed me about that article... that and not mentioning Foley at all.

I agree with most of it though.

The indigenous pair simply don't deliver enough. There is hope for the lightly framed Tambling, as this is only his third year in the system. Did you watch him today walls you Tossa. Yes his third year. 4 goals in one qtr against the premiers?

He talked about Johnson and Gaspar with kid gloves. Boy they should feel flattered.

Dont know what all the fuss is about.

Its just everything we say on here toned down.

Only suggested Bowden and Richardson could not improve and were likely to not experience success. Cant argue with that.

Most people agree on Krakour.

Maybe just a bit premature on Delidio and Tambling as game breakers and top ten finnishes in Best and Fairest are not as important as them developing into the players they will be.

Other than that I agreed with most of it.

I lump Walls article in with Lyon and Sheehan's efforts over the past couple of weeks:
- Poorly researched
- Gaps in analysis (No mention of Foley or Tuck)
- Easy to write when a team's lost a few in a row

The worst part of Walls article for mine was mentioning that Newman might struggle to play 200 games. He's not quite 25, has 90-odd games to his name already and is performing brilliantly after a career threatening injury. I'd bet my right bollock that Newy will play 200 for us.

I thought that was a very balanced and forthright article. Im far from a Walls fan, but apart from a few oversights, like not mentioning Foley, there was nothing wrong with what he said. What are all you sooks going on about? It was an opinion based on some research unlike a fair few other "journos". When Walls tees off he really has a crack, this was not an attack stop being so precious.

Much, much MUCH better article than the garbage from those duds Lyon and Sheahan
