For mine we have the second best list in the league on a SPREAD of talent all over the park. (saints have more elite players but drop off dramatically)

Has Eade even got us close to being the second best side?

it's amazing. Rodney Eade is getting slammed by supporters from such highly performed clubs as Fremantle and my god Richmond!

There was even Demon or two in there also. Amazing. Now I expect he'll cop it from clubs who have won the thing recently or made top 4 in recent years....but those clubs...well it's baffling.

This is the third year in a row that we have made the top 4. He has got us to 2 prelims in that time. And this year is not over yet.

And in that time Freo...Richmond and Melbourne have done little more than tank to build their lists. Melbourne and Richmond are all excited by their tank built potential yet once again failed to make the 8 let alone top 4. Richmond can't even tank build that well.

So aside from making and or winning a flag, Rockets record is better than most coaches currently going around.

Look, I could agree with your thoughts if it was Mark Harvey or Damien Hardwick commenting on Eade, but we're just supporters. Rodney has most definitely achieved more than Harvey and Hardwick to this point and how do you know that we (the posters you refer to)don't rate him higher than our own coach? We're merely commenting on yours because that's what the thread is about.

My opinion is that Eade is a very good coach, but he lacks that bit extra and seemingly faulters in pressure games. Unlike Harvey and Hardwick, Eade has had many, many opportunities to get a team across the line in big games (both during the home and away series and in finals) and has fallen short more often than not.
Does he handle pressure well enough to make the right decisions? I'd say history says no, and his comment about Cooney's injury is another example of him not handling the pressure IMO.

If Rodney was serious about being a career coach, he should get his manager to give Essendon a call.

I think that fate (well, injuries to be exact) has delivered him an opportuntity to leave the Dogs this year with his credibility still quite high, and it will only diminish if he continues with the Dogs next year.

Smorgon should let Rodney go, with all the players retiring at years end, it is almost the end of an era in the West anyhow.

Shouldn't be hard to get someone decent who would want to coach the Dogs list next year.

What rebuild - not necessary, shows how much you know about the Dogs. We have been playing most of the year with 9 players that never played in last years prelim, including 4 first year players. We have slowly introduced new players to replace older ones and will continue the process next year.

There are 13 players on the current list that are 28 or over. A rebuild is less than 2 years away.

WTF - We are number one for clearances and number two for 1st posession and in the top three for hard ball gets. We have plenty of tough nuts in the team like Cross, Boyd, Picken, Hahn. Hall, Lake etc

What is the breakdown of those stats when playing against the top 3? 2 wins and 12 losses against Geelong, Collingwood and St. Kilda in the last 2 years tells me that you rack up those stats against bottom 8 sides.

Can't say the same about Eade, he seems to follow trends rather than set them.

Errr that's not entirely correct. Thompson's play on at all cost was learned from Kevin Sheedy circa 2000. The rolling zones was a variation of Terry Wallace's flooding.

Interesting, I only counted 12, with Collingwood 8, Geelong 11 and the Saints 9. I don't know if any other top 4 team will be picking up high draft picks this year apart from the dogs with Libber Jnr and Wallis Jnr? But we will certainly be replenishing our midfield to join Brownlow medalist Cooney only 25, Griffin 24, Ward 20, Reid 21. Our young ruckman Roughy will get an early taste of finals along with our young forward in Grant and maybe even Jones which will hold us in good stead going forward.

Yes, Collingwood did beat us for the first time since the 2006 final last year by a point (we did beat you in round 22 remember) And you beat us both times this year, but we have always matched up well against you. I am not over-confident, but the finals are always a different ballgame too, and we were the underdogs against the pies in 2006, after being beaten comfortably by them during the H&A.

The other side of the coin is, whos available and beter? There are some new coaches out there who have got praise for wringing a couple of wins out of a rabble, but we all know that taking a team from the bottom to scrape into the top eight is a hell of a lot easier than taking that team into the top 4, and likewise from there to the premiership.

Not sure you're thinking very clearly here. Why would a career coach want to go to Essendon? Pretty tough environment for a new coach I would have thought, particularly if Knights gets the flick this year and the new coach doesn't have success over the next two. Who would want the spectre of James Hird in the background in that situation?

With the likely retirement of Johnno, Eagle and possibly Hahn as well as Aker being moved along, next year's Bulldogs list will be the closest we'll get to a Rodney Eade formed list. He's kept the best of what we had in 2005 and has been planning for these retirements along with the recruiting team since then. He'll most likely trade to fill a couple of deficiencies as well (midfield/forward pace). His balls will be on the line over the coming two years moreso than they are now and he'll have no excuses regarding limitations relating to the list he inherited. But, what career coach wouldn't like that opportunity?

Was picking Mitch Hahn a good decision? What about playing Brad Johnson? Higgins has been woeful this entire year and you haven't beaten a top 4 side.

Mitch Hahn was a good decision. Hahn is an important player, big, tough bodies are important in finals. He'll be better for the run. Higgins and Johnson have been riddled with injuries all year. Unfortunate. Eade didn't injure them

As for 2010 its looking pretty grim. But its not over, and there are 12 other clubs that would be happy to be in the Dogs position

Personally I think Rodney knew your season looked in trouble long before Cooney injured his hamstring, would you put up your hand if you were Rodney and admit this, or happily blame everything else that has suddenly presented itself?

I have met Rocket many times and he is a very positive person and doesn't need excuses for losing. In regards to the Cooney thing, you have to put the interview and questions into perspective. Journos ask a question and then take the answer out of context and blow things up.

Kids often find it hard to keep their spot in established sides. Nothing new there. Unless they fulfill a specific need that players like Picken, Ward, Harbrow and Williams (not young, but inexperienced) do then they'll have to perform consistently better than their more established team mates. The established team mates that are continually questioned are Hahn, Hargrave, Minson, Giansiracusa (I know, hard to believe but just check out the Bulldogs board after a loss) and Eagleton but up until this year they've come good after a couple of ordinary games.

This year we've been able to get guys like Stack, Jones, Grant and Wood extended runs in the seniors, with Roughead getting a few games in ruck. At the same time, guys like Hahn, Minson and Eagleton have been left out, and Aker and Johnno have missed large portions of the season as well. Perhaps Hill and Everitt could count themselves as being unlucky, but both have major issues with their concentration levels and intensity while Everitt doesn't fulfill a specific need in the side.

After this year, Eade is going to have his opportunity to manage fresh talent.

1. He doesn't recruit the kids.
2. That tends to happen with top 4 sides. However some kids that have found it easy enough to stay in the side would be Grant, Wood, Roughead and now Jones. Fortunately 3 of them are KPP and one a ready made replacement should Harbrow go. I think we will be good for another 2 years before having a slight drop off.
