Was watching video hits this morning and saw this song (think it's called Way To Go). What a load of tripe.

My Sharona guitar riff all the way through
With Beastie Boy's Fight for Your Right melody ,ost of the way through

Obviously this band don't have a creative bone in their collective bodies. Not unusual for Video Hits.

But are these ****ers allowed to blatantly plaguerise without paying due royalties because there'd be f/a left over after paying all due royalties for this particular song.

The album was delayed slightly because they were working out permissions and royalties for a few of the songs (but primarily Watching You, which is the one with the My Sharona riff).

Im pretty sure a bassline of a song is up for grabs, meaning it is not protected by copyright.

i'm not so sure of that. vanilla ice was sued for his 'ice ice baby' hook by the queen/bowie conglomerate for his rip of 'under pressure'. a couple of million big ones too, i believe...

This group show how pathetic Aussie music can be.
I'm pretty sure the guys in it are all English, they only got recognised as Australian because they did a remix of INXS's Need You Tonight, and also that mole from Neighbours has joined them.

James Ash is a pom, used to be on HITZ-FM, local community dance radio station in the early - mid 90's, he's really the mastermind behind the Rogue Traders.

Pretty sure it takes more than a cover for someone to be recognised as coming from that country

Gunners did a cover of Sympathy for the Devil - Don't think that makes them English.

No, but when they made that remix they won a few Aria awards, so obviously Australia was doing what it usually does and claiming them as aussies.

Interesting example. After a quick read-around I discovered that Vanilla and David Bowie settled out of court for an undisclosed amount.

But Im not sure what he used could be called a bassline. It's a hook, infact the main hook of the entire song, but could be easily debated that it is a bass line too. I guess the legal definition of a bassline would have to come into play.

Vanilla Ice was also sued by Wild Cherry frontman for also failing to credit Rob Parissi for 'Play that Funky Music'.

You have to wonder how Ice thought he could get away with it, not only once, but twice:eek:

Ive just done a 10 minute search around the net for some definitions when it comes to music plagiarism and Im not really having much luck. I just remember reading something a while ago where it stated a song is made up of 3 components; The words, the melody, and the score. These were all weighted with a percentage determining whether a song could be considered plagairism or not.

This thing I read said that the Bassline and percussion grooves were not even taken into account, although the brief read Ive just had doesnt mention anything liek this at all...

So I dunno:(

Dont ask me why but for some reason it makes perfect sense to me that you cant copyright the basic beat to a song.

Of course. Take a look at Blues for an example, most of the time its the same 3 chords, in the same progression over and over again. If there were tight copyright laws around in early Blues days, there would be no such thing as the blues.

From what I read before, it seems that most cases come down to whether the artist who has released questionable material botherd to seek and obtain permission of the other song/sample/hook.

If they did, they're in teh clear, if they didnt, they may have to give up all (or a %) of royalties.. big bummer!

Interesting reading of George Harrison having to give up all rights to My Sweet Lord after it was found in court he plagairised some other hacks song.

Harrison swore he'd never even heard the other song, and truly believed he had created an original piece of work.

Guitarist from The Cruel Sea was talking about how a TV show (Sports Tonight I think) kept using one of their instrumentals as a backing to their clips - he investigated, wondering where his royalties were and was told that because they used less than 9 seconds at any one time, they were in the clear.

there's rules about the ARIA awards... you're not eligable for them unless at least 50% of the act are permanent residents of australia... don't have to be citizens i don't believe...

and as for ripping of riffs, elvis costello's pump it up is in voodoo child too...

Yep, I think there's two Pommy blokes who'd be in their late 30s/early 40s plus that Neighbours girl (she's hot but gee that voice gets annoying in the My Sharona rip off).

Using the riff without permission is bad enough, but they don't use it creatively and it ends up sounding like absolute s**t. Add to that the pathetic singing and lyrics and it's one of the worst songs I've ever heard. Even Voodoo Child was catchy and used Pump It Up in a half-decent fashion.

I heard from my friend that the Rogue Traders sound really, really bad if they sing live.
Providing it really was live, I saw them playing at half-time of last year's bum sniffing grand final and they didn't sound too bad, relatively speaking.

They've plagiarised Costello, The Knack, and Tears for Fears. I'm too horrified by them to actually try listening to anything else from their album, in case some other tune from the past which means something to me has been defiled.

I downloaded this album, illegally (my 6yo likes the Costello song and the "My Sharona" one). Anyone who downloads this album illegally should be compensated by the artist for doing so. I actually think that the album should be banned outright for being too dreadful. Anyone who would actually pay for it has too much money, or no brains at all.

The only thing that may have helped this release would be a bonus DVD featuring the Neighbours totty fingering herself.

Total pap.
