Celebrated SA race caller cahrged with attempted murder:
Former racecaller Ron Papps has been charged with attempted murder following an alleged domestic incident involving his wife Judy.
South Australian-based newspaper the Sunday Mail reports on its front page that the popular broadcaster was remanded in custody after fronting a hearing at the Port Lincoln Magistrates Court on Friday.
Police are yet to confirm the individuals involved in the alleged incident however have confirmed that police were deployed to a ‘domestic’ on Thursday evening.
Papps, 64, called races in three states, across all three codes - primarily thoroughbreds – for over three decades.
He received an Order Of Australia medal in 1994 for his services to racing in a career which commencing in Tasmania back in 1962 for the ABC.
Finding his way back to the mainland, Papps worked in Adelaide before moving to Melbourne and joining 3UZ.
In that five year stint at 3UZ, he was influential in establishing the career of now deceased racecaller Darren Tyquin.
Returning to Adelaide, Papps was regarded as South Australia’s premier racecaller until he hung-up the binoculars in 1999.
Papps will be remanded in custody until February 3.
