You can do it without me.

I would rather we relocate to Canberra.

The NMFC can and will stand alone, the on field success we have enjoyed in the past decade has turned many young children into North supporters, if we hold on for a few more years (as Hawthorn did) they will enter the work force and thus become potential members.

It up to us to remain positive and focused on the bright future of our great club. I for one am looking forward with optmism.

The Doggies are a great club and without doubt cut from the same cloth as us but we would be selling oursevles and our team short to give up on our dream of a strong and viable NMFC. Take my advice stay positive and we will all reap the rewards.

NORTH WILL BE A POWER ON AND OFF THE FIELD BY 2010.

A merger with the Western Bulldogs wouldn't provide any long term assistance to either club. I can't see the AFL providing any finance to assist the merger, but it would be against the interests (TV Deal).
Also, I don't think the other clubs, inparticular the Victorian clubs would approve the merger, because of reasonable depth of talent on both lists. Both teams have 8 or 9 top quality players with experience, and a similiar number of promising youngsters.

I do think in order to reduce costs and assist with the longevity of both clubs, they should consider the possibilty of sharing training facilities, medical services etc. It must cost a fortune to set up Gyms, training programs, medical services and the like. If North and the Bulldogs could reduce the costs by sharing these facilities, then maybe it's something they could look into.

Anyway it was just a thought. Feel free to blast me.

Eagle_Fan suggested a similar thing on the West Coast board last week, saying that West Coast could improve their preparation for Melbourne games by sharing training facilities with a Victorian club, and that clubs like North and Footscray would be ideal because with a financial contribution from West Coast, the struggling clubs could upgrade their facilities.

Admittedly it's not a completely flawless plan, eg - the two clubs play against eachother, or on the same day and therefore have similarly planned preparation timeframes, but it is a very clever plan that could prove a win-win for all clubs involved.

So who do you really barrack for Donga??? Nice try with the "We" & "Stick it up the rest". Go back to your own club...

Guys let's not get ahead of ourselves. North will merge one day, as will three or four other Victorian clubs (take your pick out of Geelong, Footscray, StKilda, Melbourne and Hawthorn). The only question is will it be on our terms i.e. like the Fitzroy merger was going to be.

Don't get me wrong, the spine on this thread is a demonstration of why we are still here today, but don't deny the possibility that North are just waiting for the opportunity to swallow a club that has fallen on it's sword. We were very nearly the North Melbourne Lions and I think we would have got used to that.

TREASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Start from Donga.

There is no way known that I would want to see the club merge. With our financial situation it would be a takeover.

Sure at the end of 96 I was becoming used to the idea that we might take over Fitzroy, we got shafted and it didnt eventuate, who knows what our financial situation might be like at the moment and how mnay more flags we might have won.

If North ever merge I wil start following Lithuanian Baseball

Agree it would be a bitter pill to swallow, and if we were the 'takee' then I would probably stop following football - although I would take a keen interest in who Stevens & Archer would play for if they were still pulling on the boots.
Anyway just the thought of the Carlton Kangaroos makes you shudder, so all I'm saying in this world of big bank take little bank, don't be surprised if North try and secure 'their' future by talking to a club that's hobbling to the negotiation table and waving a white flag. We did it once and you know the day will come when we will do it again.

To merge with another financially screwed club would be to take on two lots of debts as a merged identity. would it not? And the $6m AFL merger carrot is no longer being dangled, so the thought of a long term future is not as reassuring.

This is the problem with 2 struggling clubs merging but you would think that the AFL would be all for less Victorian clubs and would probably like to see only 12 clubs in the competition in the long term future.
For this reason I can see the AFL paying any debts the new merged club would have.
Very hard to see all clubs continue along as it currently is with expenses rising every year and with clubs like ours going into further debt.
A merge with Footscray could just work. Not that we'd like it but I'd rather Footscray then say Carlton or Richmond.
Melbourne clubs must soon be looking at merging together otherwise interstate take overs may happen again.
Football is now more about business then it is about playing on the field. It's sad but it's true.

My comment re: the $6m merger inducement was because there is currently no set reward being offered for two clubs to merge, as opposed to 6-7 years ago when North, Fitzroy, Brisbane, Hawthorn, St.Kilda, Footscray, Richmond and melbourne were all being widely spoken about as merger candidates.

I do agree that if we did merge with the Bulldogs, it would be a genuine merger instead of heavily favouring one club, as both clubs have a similar financial and political footing within the AFL.

This time around though, I think a merger would be quite damaging to the game. Attendances are falling, prices are rising, player payments are soaring, TV coverage is rooted, teams playing home games interstate, and even coaches are now taking grabs at big dollars. With the sport becoming more and more of a business, and many grass roots fans becoming disenchanted, a second merger will (I believe) see a lot more people giving footy the snub than happened with the first merger.

As a last resort maybe...........

Ask any of the Woodville (Blighty's old team) or West Torrens fans over here. A merged side like the Eagles in the SANFL is better than having no team at all to follow.

If the dice were rolled and it meant that the only other option would be having no team to follow , I would probably support a merged team.

We're OK in the short term but how much longer can Melbourne support 10 AFL teams ?

Fair point about 10 teams being to many in Vic, however less teams in Vic does not automaticly spell out our doom.
How many teams should we have 5,6,7,8 who knows, only 1 thing is certain and that is only the strong will survive.
NEVER GIVE UP AND NEVER GIVE IN
