A merger with the Western Bulldogs wouldn't provide any long term assistance to either club. I can't see the AFL providing any finance to assist the merger, but it would be against the interests (TV Deal).
Also, I don't think the other clubs, inparticular the Victorian clubs would approve the merger, because of reasonable depth of talent on both lists. Both teams have 8 or 9 top quality players with experience, and a similiar number of promising youngsters.
I do think in order to reduce costs and assist with the longevity of both clubs, they should consider the possibilty of sharing training facilities, medical services etc. It must cost a fortune to set up Gyms, training programs, medical services and the like. If North and the Bulldogs could reduce the costs by sharing these facilities, then maybe it's something they could look into.
Anyway it was just a thought. Feel free to blast me.

Eagle_Fan suggested a similar thing on the West Coast board last week, saying that West Coast could improve their preparation for Melbourne games by sharing training facilities with a Victorian club, and that clubs like North and Footscray would be ideal because with a financial contribution from West Coast, the struggling clubs could upgrade their facilities.
Admittedly it's not a completely flawless plan, eg - the two clubs play against eachother, or on the same day and therefore have similarly planned preparation timeframes, but it is a very clever plan that could prove a win-win for all clubs involved.

Guys let's not get ahead of ourselves. North will merge one day, as will three or four other Victorian clubs (take your pick out of Geelong, Footscray, StKilda, Melbourne and Hawthorn). The only question is will it be on our terms i.e. like the Fitzroy merger was going to be.
Don't get me wrong, the spine on this thread is a demonstration of why we are still here today, but don't deny the possibility that North are just waiting for the opportunity to swallow a club that has fallen on it's sword. We were very nearly the North Melbourne Lions and I think we would have got used to that.
This is the problem with 2 struggling clubs merging but you would think that the AFL would be all for less Victorian clubs and would probably like to see only 12 clubs in the competition in the long term future.Originally posted by Darky
To merge with another financially screwed club would be to take on two lots of debts as a merged identity. would it not? And the $6m AFL merger carrot is no longer being dangled, so the thought of a long term future is not as reassuring.

For this reason I can see the AFL paying any debts the new merged club would have.
Very hard to see all clubs continue along as it currently is with expenses rising every year and with clubs like ours going into further debt.
A merge with Footscray could just work. Not that we'd like it but I'd rather Footscray then say Carlton or Richmond.
Melbourne clubs must soon be looking at merging together otherwise interstate take overs may happen again.
Football is now more about business then it is about playing on the field. It's sad but it's true.
With the sport becoming more and more of a business, and many grass roots fans becoming disenchanted, a second merger will (I believe) see a lot more people giving footy the snub than happened with the first merger.
