Some comments based on the games I've seen this year.

Grundy was in great form earlier in the year, generally playing as the main target in the forward arc. He kicked at least 7 in one game - might have even been a couple more. Looks to be a good contested mark, strong on the lead and clever off the ground. Sometimes looks a bit slow when he's chasing an opponent out of the forward 50.

In recent weeks he's been playing back a bit and against Queanbeyan a fortnight ago was highlighted by the club as being one of the best, playing on QB's best forward. However, since the team spends most of its time in attack, it means he hasn't been as prominent.

Would be very surprised if he isn't on the list in some shape or form next year and looks a decent prospect to play senior AFL.

Garruba played a couple of eye catching games earlier in the year, though has been a bit quieter recently. Has good pace and neat (though not eye-catching) skills. A good chance for a second year on the rookie list, I suspect.

Not really been taken yet by Campbell but he's possibly suffered from playing in defence (see comment under Grundy). Given his age and physique you'd want to see him dominating games, something he's not done. Should get a chance in the ruck over the next few weeks because Erikson and Shaw are both injured. He's too old to be a rookie next year and not sure that he's done enough for a senior spot, but may depend on how the club sees its stock of talls for next season. He may be seen as decent insurance.

Been a little disappointed in Clarke. Saw him play one really good game but tends to drift in and out of others. Doesn't look very fit to me. He's been played in a variety of positions which might not have helped him. Don't really have a feel of whether he'll get another year on the rookie list - others have put in a far stronger claim than he has, IMO, and history suggests that most are only given one game.

Shaw has been dominating in the ruck and takes some good marks but looks very unconfident kicking around the ground - though usually manages to chip in with a goal or two. Will be very very surprised if he's not around next year.

My observations are based on watching about 3/4 of the home games so others may have different views if they've watched Canberra games.

Thanks Liz!

Heath Grundy was one of my favourite players for Norwood in the SANFL. He was expected to be taken in the top 20 in last years draft, so you got a steal when you picked him up in the Pre-Season draft. I was actually very disappointed the Crows didn't draft him so he could stay with the Redlegs.

Anyway, he represented South Australia in the U/18 Championships, and actually made the All Australian side. He started last year in defence and played quite well, but about half way through the season he moved into attack. He averaged about 2-3 goals a game, kicked the odd freak goal, and as you said, was a strong contested mark. He was extremely impressive for an 18 year old. He became our FF, a big ask, especially considering we finished last and got belted almost every game.

If possible, I would appreciate you updating me on Grundy's progress every so often. Thanks once again.

Being a melbourne boy, I have not had the chance to see our rookies in action and it has been on my mind who will still be in red and white from our rookies next year.

However, from the list of best players in the ACTFL; of the rookies Vogels, Grundy, Shaw and Garubba seem to be the most prominent.

Potter has been mentioned a few times, but I recollect from previous posts that his disposal skills are not outstanding.

As mentioned our back line has been a great place to rest this season and it would appear that Campbell has not been dominating. It will be interesting as to wheter he is added to our list. My feeling is that he is not, but who knows what is known about the guy from the iner sanctum and Key position players do not grow on trees.

I was also excited when we picked up Clarke, with a bit of a Diesel / Mitchell feeling about him, however, I have not seen too many mentions of him this year.

I think that the experiment of loading up of rookies has worked with us unearthing a potential AFL player in Vogels with a couple of possibilites in Shaw and Grundy. Makes me feel better about the wasted picks in Spriggs and Heathy James. :)
