I only start this thread as we play them round 1.

He was interviewed on fox footy. Hopefully somebody can find and post the whole conversation. Btw I like Ross as a media performer.

His main points were (and I may be paraphrashing)

Freo have only had 5 weeks training since Christmas
Being first game of the regular season is a massive honour for Fremantle
"We" play Etihad very well.

Now I understand tonight looks bad for Freo and possibly good for us but his comments were interesting.

Anyone else hear him speak and thoughts on the comments.

They will choke the life out of us at Etihad, really need to take our chances in front of goals (Cloke/Lynch). They should be favorites for a good reason but perhaps being round 1 we are a chance.

Them losing tonight doesn't mean anything imo.

By "we" play Etihad well was he referring to Collingwood? I haven't heard the interview, however a lot of what he appears to have said is quite frank. They are a beat behind having started pre-season 2-3 weeks behind us and our record at Etihad is quite impressive (15-4 record there since 08).

Personally I had us as clear favourites heading into round 1, but Lyon's comments have altered my line of thinking.

No sorry he meant "we" as in his club.

abso freaking lutely.

very very glad to play them round 1.

by june they will be rolling.

i hope by august so are we.

I will add I am so bored by the Nab challenge. Best game was us and cats. Although bombers losing on siren was funny

I cant wait for round 1. Judging by Ross's comments they are up for it as well.

That's an odd one because our record there is far more imposing than theirs of late. My ninja edit wasn't quite quick enough, however since the beginning of 09 the record is 15-4 with a percentage of 126 and no team has been able to score 100 plus points against us in our past 11 outings. In the same time frame Fremantle's record is 7-13.

Think we normally play fairly average teams there though

Eg: last year saints bulldogs and norf none of them made finals

Since 2012 the Dockers have faced St Kilda, Carlton, Bulldogs, North Melbourne, Melbourne and St Kilda.

Nothing to really test them but I think their lock down high pressure style will crush our high handball running game at etihad, especially as we are lacking in experience with it.

The lack of space really hurts

This.

Would be so much more confident at MCG

We'll see. It takes an extremely high level of fitness to execute that style of football and from what I saw tonight they looked a beat off fitness wise. Not to say we're going to come out and dominate them because they were missing some class, however as Vj said I'd much prefer to be catching them in round 1 when they are unlikely to be cherry ripe :thumbsu:

That is our biggest chance to beat them. Their lack of fitness.

Probably why i found Ross's comments so interesting, Looks like they are massively aiming to win this game imo.

They won't be cherry ripe but still a bloody good team and I think a top 2 shoo-in.

Would be very nice to win as we have a really tough draw early for memory and this could take the pressure off

We'll be up and about don't worry about that!

Also they topped the interchange chart last year averaging 146 per game and had 126 last night (Eagles 110). Would be more of a factor at the G but they still have some adjusting to do, particularly with their intense game style. Round 1 is a great time to get them.

I agree. Freo could well end up being premiership favourites by round 11

5 weeks of training doesn't seem to worry the Hawks much.
Nearly every team would have only trained about 5 weeks since Christmas. Players had time off for christmas & New years break& then Australia day long weekend. We are only mid February now for goodness sake. No idea where he is going with that. Could have just told the truth & said "it's a practice match & we don't give a shit".

They haven't lost at Etihad under Lyon

We just need to take our chances early. If you can have a lead they have to play a more attacking game and that opens up chances for us to score. They showed in the grand final they can attack pretty good without getting scored on so we have to make the most of our chances when they come. Pretty confident we will win.

Both teams have the same record at Etihad under their current coaches, 5-1.

Ultimately it's the players that have to go out there and win the game so the players that have the onus of the record. Our players have a better record on the ground than theirs.

I have to be honest though I don't know why I'm having difficulty talking us up. We should be getting around our good record there. We look so fit ATM, fitter than I've seen us since 2010.

I'm really excited about our prospects in the first month so long as we don't cop too many further injuries.

They certainly didn't have a problem playing attacking footy against us in the first quarter over there last year in round 7 leading by 5 goals at quarter time. We seemed to have been ambushed by their all-out attack in that quarter and were totally unprepared.

There are always a few surprises round 1 with potentially clubs coming in a little under done. I hope we are firing from the get go as to get a win over the dockers in round 1 would be huge for us.

Go Pies!!
