Comparing who is better out of Gillard, Abbott, Rudd, Turnball et al is like comparing who is better out of Kersten, McCarthy, Tabener. Fact is we haven't had a decent big forward since Pav, I mean decent PM since Howard (and again I am not a Liberal voter).

Says a lot of our forward line when we start hailing Taberner as our best forward. It is that bad now.

Taberner is like the Labor Party. You don't realise how bad they are until you give them another go only to replace them at the next opportunity.

Seeing as you started the political tirade, to think John Howard was a good Prime Minister shows that you are a fool.
Howard was appallingly bad. He was Machiavellian in his dealings. He stood with Bush to set the world on fire when only those two nations refused to ratify Kyoto. He lied to get reelected through the children overboard and set Australia back decades with industrial relations and by his encouragement of the racist element. He triggered a housing price boom with the first home owners scheme which has not abated and has now left most young people with no hope of home ownership unless their parents are rich. He lurched a traditionally moderate party to the far right. He worked to force parents into private education by undermining and underfunding the public education system (and he called it choice!). Economically he was lazy, and made no lasting positive reforms as prime minister or treasurer except perhaps what Patrick did to the wharves.
Abbott is a try-hard disciple of Howard and became deeply unpopular in less than a term. His economic management was poor. He is still working to destabilise his party, has outdated and frankly bizarre views on religion, marriage, women, the environment and Australia's place in the world.
Rudd was a selfish prime minister and after losing his first tenure was as destabilising as Abbott is now. The reason he was deposed was that he was a nightmare as a person, and his real persona was beginning to be exposed. The one thing he managed well was to steer Australia through the global financial crisis.
Gillard was also deeply unpopular, but despite having a wafer thin minority government with a stridently misogynist and negative opposition, still manage to get a high number of programs passed by parliament.
Turnbull has had only a short time as prime minister and is still beholden to the extreme right of his party. He has made some positive moves, but the jury is still out and he will do well to perform despite the members of his own party.
From worst to best (or least worse at least): Howard, Abbott, Rudd, Whitlam, Fraser, Turnbull = Gillard, Keating, Hawke. Funnily enough I am also not a Liberal voter.

Legislatively, Gillard was hugely productive (highest rate of passing legislation in our our history). Like her or not that's pretty impressive given the parliamentary mix she had to work with. She just didn't know how to play the PR game and subsequently left the door open for Rudd to return. Both her and now Turnbull need(ed) to stop listening to their dumb parties and back their own beliefs. I quite like Turnbull but he seems spineless atm.

I'd have Abbott nudging out Rudd for worst ever. Equal disasters from both a PR and legislative perspective. Rudd only slightly ahead because he did a couple of memorable things. Did Abbott do absolutely anything during his time as PM?

Passing lots of legislation is only a good thing if you think we dont already have enough rules.

Id prefer politicians spent their time ripping up pages of legislation rather than writing new ones just like Kerry Packer suggested.
