We were only in the Bombers game because they couldn’t kick. Should have lost that by 100.

We won’t be getting a good assistant anytime soon. It’s no real surprise that we’ve never really had any great assistants working under Ross, so unless it comes with a guarantee that they’ll take over the role as soon as Lyon is let go, then it’s not happening.
Yep.

Clubs sign assistants with guarantee's that they can take the senior role.

As I said before, we've got one win left for 2018.

Suck it up.

I think you may be right.

Yep, déjà vu. We're going nowhere with our current footy dept.
Well the floggings are down from +100 that occurred around this time last year.

FWIW after watching them in the pre-season and seeing them at a few club functions I said at the time that the last handful of games would be fugly if we stuck with the kids. I think I wrote somewhere that one function attendee said that a good shit would kill half of them they were that skinny.

I see Ross as another Malthouse.

Mick could coach, no doubt about it but then he went to Carlton, had a decent young list and it all went pear shaped. I’m not sure if it was his values, methods or what but the game is a forever changing beast and you either have to keep up or you get chewed out.

Ross is at that point now unfortunately. Yes, he can coach - he’s been our best coach ever by a long way but I think the game has changed too much for him to adjust plus he’s never had a young list to mould. He has walked in to a clubs with ready made players.

Brett Kirk was down here specifically because of his relationship with Lyon. Fyfe gives him a lot of credit molding him into the player he is. Simon Lloyd was also clearly a quality coach as well.

Line of least resistance to blame and slag RTB but I think it's more to do with lists and maturity.
We were brushed aside today.
Embarrassing how easily too.
Skills are the big worry.
Hardness at the contest, system and structure are more maturity related.
I'm hoping it was pressure and young nerves but our kicking accuracy and decision making was worrying and at times woeful.
The list will mature and develop.
Assistant coaching quality is something we can really only trust the club on.
As outsiders we have no metric.
Kirky and Lloyd were widely acknowledged as a quality assistants by players and industry insiders.
So we've had them before and I cannot imagine we'd be retaining anyone we thought wasn't worth the wages.
We go to the draft, free agency and season review.
Rinse and repeat.

It's actually far easier to just bag the players.

We need to average close to 80 points a game to have scored more than last year. The only improvement we’ve shown on last year is that we aren’t losing as many games by +100. Other than that, our gameplan is still non-existent and not only are we a laughing stock when we travel, but we are back to being easybeats at home.

We beat the team that is now 4th 2 weeks ago at home.

Yeah OK.
Looks like a pig with lipstick to me.
It's a fact. The majority of those defending Ross generally resort to it. Can't possibly be Lyon.

Blame the players. It lowers expectations and buys the rebuild more time and space. Then we get to feel comfortable about being belted and how long it's going to take to bounce back.

How could we possibly expect any results with this group of players?

Every presser, every week on here, it's how many players under x games. We are supposed to be a no excuses football club.

The majority of those questioning Lyon know the youth are going to take time. What's the point in bagging them?

The coach however, has no excuse. He should be at the top of his game right now.

There's no intensity to the way he goes about his work at the minute. I think the majority of supporters want to see more passion and intent.

We're strapped in, but where are we headed?

The gameplan itself is very concerning. Lyon can coach, and I'm sure he will get this group to finals. But I'm not seeing much in the way of evolution or growth in the way we play. Block the corridor and we're cooked.

3 years in, we look like we are simply developing another iteration of Lyonball. Low scoring, high pressure, physically demanding, effort based footy.

The list is taking time but IMO is coming along nicely, but if we don't find a way to consistently move the ball forward with purpose, and regularly apply scoreboard pressure, we will still be susceptible to the same issues and weaknesses we experienced with the 2012-2015 group.

As far as the overall football department is concerned, the support staff should regularly be reviewed and surely we should be scrutinising all aspects of the coaching group's performance and appetite for the task at hand, as we should with the footy manager.

If the Fremantle Football Club are not actively analysing, scrutinising and reviewing all of these aspects of the club, we are simply not serious about the sustained success we've been talking about for a decade.

Hi is doing what everyone begged for, playing the kids unlike previous years when Suban, Pearce, De Boer, etc were soldering on and keeping the kids out so we are going to get some good quarters and halves but a lot of inconsistency still until a lot of them get to the 50 game mark. Have a look at someone like Langdon, he can look a million dollars at Optus and get 28=29 touches and then play away and get 12 and he has been in the system for a few years. No matter what coach we get it wont change until they get the experience.

Yeah, this is my concern. A Malthouse or Pagan outcome, when a once great coach hits a wall.

From "strap yourselves in", "rewire/restump" to premiership by the end of his new contract - bad judgement, possibly signs of a coach past his best.

Yawn. This makes sense, but only to an extent. What is our gameplan? Guarantee if Fyfe, Tabs, Sandi and Bennell play that we still get pumped because regardless if we have 2 kids or 12 kids out there, our gameplan is still shithouse. Also, can someone explain to me how the f**k Sutcliffe gets a game at Round 19 when we're doubling down on youth in a rebuild? Defies logic how Sutty actually gets a game. It'd also be nice if we played Cerra in the midfield more than Matera, commonsense I know but Ross doesn't seem to realize that Matera is actually a small forward and Cerra is actually a classy midfielder.

I reckon in hindsight the 5 year contract was a massive mistake. The off-season after the 2016 debacle would've been the perfect end to an era and enabled both us and Ross to move on. Instead we are in a situation where the man who led us off the cliff is the one picking up the pieces at the bottom of it which of course isn't going to sit well with a lot of people.

If with the same players we were still 13th but building a completely different style under a new coach I reckon there wouldn't be half the criticism. I fully accept the youth 'excuse' but am just so sick of Ross, his team selections and his particular style of football that it's very hard to stay on board.

We should be praising him for something he was way too slow to implement and still hasn't completely committed to 3 years in?

Ballantyne, Johnson, et al have all played way too many games this year. Should have been the depths of depth at best. Ballas has played 13 AFL games on the back of one decent JLT half in game 3. Johnson has been cooked since 2015, yet inexplicably has managed 9 AFL games this year.

So, when these young blokes do finally get to the magical 50 game mark, what type of football will we be playing?

Same old, same old as far as I can see.

That's another two seasons away too. We're supposed to be premiers by then. :thumbsu:

It amazes me when people can't see the value in keeping some experience out there in such a young football side. Look at Carlton if you want to see what happens. Johnson is way past his best but saying he has been 'cooked' since 2015 is an exaggeration, generally at least been ok imo.

In saying that I think both players should be moved on at the end of the year.

My thoughts on your Essendon comment are that you(we) have to accept good fortune along with bad. IMO It's no reasonable to say something like (Im paraphrasing ) 'we miss targets by foot, we're sh!t. They miss shots at goal, we're lucky.' It's human nature to dwell on the negative. In golf I might sink a 10 foot birdie putt and feel happy about it for a short time, but I will also stew for days over a sliced Tee shot that costs me a stroke. It's the same when I 'have it in' for a player as I do with Shill at the moment. I'm trying hard to see the good things he does, but I just see him lumbering after opposition players with no effect on play. Yet there's many that will jump to his defense and I think they have rocks in their head.
In these times we should all seek out someone who supports another club (preferably not WC) that has balanced views and ask their opinion. Id be surprised if many think we're as bad as we do.

I don't use KPI's, I use my eyes.

We need to hold our structure forward of the ball, tackle more inside F50 and D50, win more clearances, not necessarily win the clearances but win more of them. Move the ball better by hand and foot. Compete harder all over the ground but particularly the hard ball. Become more efficient going inside 50 and be more efficient once inside 50 to 1) not allow it to leave easily 2) get a shot away.

Basically we just have to look like we're progressing. We currently aren't.

If you don't like the feedback and comments (and it's not unique to our supporters) then don't come on here, it's quite simple. Most supporters aren't happy with where we're at or where we're going under the current regime and don't want to accept it. Some of us want success sooner rather than later.
Well your blind, if you cannot see how we have improved from last year nothing will convince you. We are in the latter part of the season and have young players on the park in critical positions, we are going to get fluctuating energy levels and inconsistency from here on out.

Some of these comments make me laugh. Clarkson knew our current strength is in our back line. He moved his players up and suffocated our ball use from that area. Our midfield and forward lines are depleted and/or young.
Posters in here need to do the Bart Simpson blackboard penance and write 'We are rebuilding..' 100 times..

It's because of this that I decided at the end of last season to ignore the ladder for this year. With a young and inexperienced squad it's possible to have wins that give false hope (e.g., Carlton) and losses that mask steady improvement (e.g., North, Eagles).

Instead, my hope was that we would remain competitive in games for longer, and if there was to be a target it would be a For/Against percentage range of 80-90%. It's a deceptive benchmark in the early-mid part of the season while a reliable sample size is accumulating, but it's a reasonable measure now.

We see what we look for. If you're looking to put poor play at Ross's door.....but it wasn't the coach who had 8+ unsuccessful shots on goal.

Cox regressed to his uncertain goal-attempt past - 2 missed shots that with his new 'routine' and confidence he should have nailed. Some shots from others were sheer ill-luck. Even the great Eddie Betts hit the post in the crucial dying stages of the Crows game. We had at least 3 goal try occasions where Lady Luck just sneered at us. Wouldn't have got us the win but a better look, and wasn't anything to do with RTB.

He might have all the deficiencies his critics allege. But I see so many other teams involved in low scores, congestion, and poor decision-making too.

I'm close to the action at Optus and frequently watched our (often the younger) players do something classy - like Giro snaring the ball despite ferocious attack - then not be able to follow through (Giro then kicked it just out on the full). THAT is the player not the coach. As they adjust and harden to the play our best young players will finish better - viz. Ed Langdon who used to be an atrocious kick. OK, still not perfect but routinely gets us a goal.

What a cop out. This was the same Hawthorn who got absolutely pantsed by Brisbane in Tasmania. So because Clarko figures out our strength, Lyon wasn’t able to at least react with something else?

You just need to listen to the press conference to see he has almost no cl anymore
