It sounds more like he thinks he may not be named:

"With the new interchange rule you can't really go into a game expecting to play minimum game time, so it will be interesting."

The substitute speculation is driven by the reporter. I don't see why you'd take an underdone player in as a substitute - a more likely case would be having him on initially and then plan on subbing him off. Either way, you'd have to be nervous if you have Hodge.

Thankfully we all knew about Hodge early enough. Any injury prone player could be in the same boat.. Nervous about Knights now lol

Richmond v Carlton & Geelong news here

With injuries to Kelvin Moore (hip) and Mitch Farmer (heel) and Jake King out suspended, it appears that at least two, and possibly all, of the first three teenagers drafted by Richmond last year - Conca, at pick No.6 overall, Batchelor (30) and Helbig (47) - will make their senior debut on Thursday.
Conca is likely to start across half-back after an excellent pre-season, Batchelor is being considered as a running defender and Helbig could get a gig first up as a forward-midfielder.

...

Without suspended full-back Michael Jamison, a new-look Blues back line will include ex-Geelong defender Jeremy Laidler for the first time and possibly mature-age South Australian recruit Nick Duigan.
