Not bad but Wirrpunda in a back pocket is just a step backwards. Where is Collica??

Here is my go.

FB - Collica McIntosh Read
HB - Green Jakovich Hunter
C - Wirrpunda Kerr Judd
HF - Matera McDougall Embley
FF - PhMatera Wilson Sampi
Ruck - Gardiner Cousins Chick

Int Fletcher Cox Morrison Banfield

It's tough to leave out guys like Braun, Chambers, Lynch, Gaspar etc....

Assuming everyone is fit and firing.

B: Collica McIntosh Read
HB: Morrison Jakovich Wirrpunda
C: Fletcher Chick Judd
HF: PeMatera Gardiner Hunter
F: PhMatera Wilson Sampi
R: Cox Cousins Kerr

I: Chambers, Jones, McDougall, Embley

FB - Collica Gaspar Read
HB - Green Jakovich Hunter
C - Judd Kerr Fletcher
HF - Matera McDougall Jones
FF - PhMatera Wilson Sampi
Ruck - Gardiner Cousins Chick

Int - Wirrpunda Cox Morrison Wooden

Milli as backup. I don't think McIntosh can play a full season, its time we groom someone else so when they take over full-time they are prepared.
Great depth too.

Very nearly my thoughts, but I can't accept putting Embley in when there's that much talent on offer.

FB - Collica McIntosh Read
HB - Green Jakovich Morrison
C - Wirrpunda Chick Judd
HF - Pe Matera McDougall Hunter
FF - Ph Matera Wilson Sampi

R: Gardiner Cousins Kerr
Int: Cox, Fletcher, Banfield, Lynch)

(With Chambers, Braun, Adkins, Gaspar, Wooden, Jones etc very very cut to not be in the side)
Seriously, outside the first 18 or so, there are probably about 2-3 places up for grabs, depending on who trained best, who gets injured, that sorta thing.)

McIntosh as backup? So your saying that we should not play McIntosh if he is fit and ready come round 1????

Also Wirrpunda not in the starting 18? Surely a spot up forward for Jones or Sampi is in order?

After much deliberation.........

Collica McIntosh Read

Green Jakovich Hunter

Pe Matera Cousins Judd

Wirra Gaspar Embley

Ph Matera Wilson Jones

Followers : Gardiner Chick Kerr

Bench : Morrison Banfield Cox Wooden

Unlucky : Glass Sampi Fletcher Lynch McDougall Chambers

Comments:

Gaspar: I really rate. When he played last year we looked good. Can get to a contest to mark or bring to ground. McDougall still raw.

Wilson : Just ahead of Lynch who leads well up the field and kicks long. Not required if Gaspar is playing.

Glass : Unlucky competing with Hunter, Green and Collica.

Banfield Morrison Peter Matera and Jones looks a bit the same. Perhaps one could drop out for Chambers.

Chick and Embley provide the grunt. This is absolutely essential to me. Similar to what Worsfold and Langdon provided in Premiership years.

Morrison : I hope that he can make it back.

Sampi : Cant see Wirra Sampi and Phil Matera needed in the same team so one has to miss out at this point.

GO EAGLES!

Another possibility.....

Humm McIntosh Gaspar
Collica Jakovich Green
Judd Chick Chambers
Wirrpunda McDougall Hunter
Pe Matera Wilson Ph Matera
Gardiner Cousins Kerr
Cox Jones Wooden Morrison

Notes:
Morrison and Read have both missed a hell of a lot of footy and won't have got any better for the experience and others have improved in their absence - its going to take them the best part of the season to get back to match fitness. Morrison's skills in distributing the footy gets him on to the bench.

Humm, Munro, Haynes all played well/contributed in WCE's last official match but havent cracked a mention in the 27 listed thus far! What's happened to their potential in the last three months? It can't have just disappeared.

This board was full of "lets get rid of Embley" through the draft period. How come he now makes the starting 18 for so many?

Some choices were close - Wooden ahead of Banfield (can tag just as well, better disposal), Wilson ahead of Lynch and McDougall seems the best long term prospect for a tall forward; Peter Matera ahead of Sampi, Munro etc. at this stage

Problems: replacements for McIntosh/Jakovich need to emerge quickly; disposal out of my selected defence is not flash

Let a youngster learn FB. Milli will struggle to get through 22 games, might aswell start getting used to not having him (i'm not saying don't play milli, just don't use him as our #1 FB).

I like the idea of Wirra coming off the bench, ripping the game up, then having a rest. He's a very good player, just not a 4qtr player.

Jones up forward is a must. He was a very good goalkicker with us when he was playing, and with others taking up the tagging role it releases him full time into the forward line.
Sampi has the potential to be a matchwinner. We picked him at #6 in a very strong draft (would have been top 3 in this years draft), time to start playing him.

B Collica McIntosh Read

HB Green Jakovich Morrison

C Fletcher Kerr Judd

HF Hunter Gaspar Wirrpunda

F Ph. Matera Wilson Jones

R Gardiner Cousins Chick

I Cox Chambers Pe Matera Wooden

Notes -

I think Peter Matera will become more of an impact player off the bench (basically swapping roles with Judd)

Gaspar may start the seaso at CHF, but is likely to go to FB if Milli goes down, opening the door for McDougall.

Hope to see both read and Morrison back to their respective bests. If they are then they easily make the 18.

Great on-ball division with Gardy tapping down to Cuz, Chicky, Kerr, Judd, Fletcher, Wirrpunda, Jones and Matera

Couldn't agree more. He's a great overhead mark (especially considering he'll generally have a small defender on him) and a good kick for goal. He's also very creative at ground level, which can help feed our other forwards.

It also gives the added benefit to Woosha that if a tag on an opposition player is required, he's already in the side.

I doubt if Read and Morrisson will be ready after 2 years out.

Also the game is against minor premiers PA so I think we'll go with experience

Wooden Milli Collica
Green Jako Glass
Judd Chick Fletcher
Wirrpunda McDougall(or Haynes) Hunter
Jones BB Fido

Gardy Cuz Kerr

Cox Fletcher Roo Banfield

My only problem with that line up is who to put on Tredrea if Jako is getting beaten. So CHF may go to Lynch or Gaspar to allow either to drop to CHB with Gardy going CHF and Cox into ruck

these are the definates as i see it

FB : Collica McIntosh ----
HB : ---- Jakovich Hunter
C : ---- Kerr Judd
HF : ---- ----- Wirrpunda
FF : PhMatera Wilson ----
Ruck : Gardiner Cousins Chick

Int : Pe Matera Cox ---- ----

now we have 8 positions open to the following regular players
Read
Green
Fletcher
Embley
Sampi
Banfield
Chambers
Macdougall
Morrison
Jones
Wooden
Gasper
Glass
Braun
Adkins
lynch
embley

it's a hard job for the selectors.

personally i would like to see Macdougall at CHF and Glass at FB, Lynch at FF and Gasper playing at CHB when the opportunity arises during the season.

i agree with larrikin that peter Matera should be used as a strike player.

so what do you do with Jako? bench him? i would think that the match commitee would not want to 'waste' a playing position and would have to think seriously about either playing him at CHF or dropping him for the day.

He looks pretty okay at CHF if need be.

As for Tredrea, there are a number of possibilities, namely Gaspar & Lynch- I'd hope that at least one or both of these guys will be in the team for that purpose. Realistically, if we're going to use McIntosh and Jakovich full time this year, it'd be commonsense to travel with at least one interchange tall defender as standard.

Incidentally, assuming that McDougall makes CHF his own, where does that leave Cox/Gardiner? If we're using them as a ruck rotation, they can afford to run their guts out, and continually provide a tall marking target forward and back- given that we don't really lose anything when one or the other is rucking, it might be worth rotating them frequently and trying to run Primus off his feet- I'm guessing its gonna be a hot day..

Also, call me an idiot, but if Gardiner is not needed elsewhere, in a pinch, wouldn't he make a pretty handy CHB to play Tredrea? Huge, excellent mark, strong hands, very mobile and agile, and adept at the body contests. I don't know that if Gardiner playing as a defensive tall has *ever* been suggested, but really, why not?

Nice idea, but Tredrea would be waaay to quick on the lead.....

you reckon?
I would have thought that Gardiner is one of our quicker big bodies- faster than Jako, at any rate..

I'm guessing it would be a lot easier to put together a team if we could see the likely port lineup for that game, and how we'd match up..

We really really need to beat PA... two years without a win..

I still think that Tredrea's recent dominance over Jak has had more to do with the thrashings Port have handed out to us through the midfield. Besides, Milli beat Tredrea pretty convincingly the last time we played them.

And speaking of Milli, aren't we writing him off a little too quickly? His form in the second half of the year was as good as any other full back going around.

Sure, we do need to find an eventual replacement, but Glass is still getting valuable experience playing a support role.

You are of course correct about McIntosh.. Fact is, when healthy, he's still one the best FBs going around, and vastly better than any other possible FBs we have. Logically, thats really all thats important- if he's fit, we should use him.

Having said that, there are two things which should be high on our priorities in relation to him- item one, we want to extend his playing career if possible, because he's bloody good, and item two, we need to groom a replacement quick smart. Realistically, if McIntosh went down with a career ending injury tomorrow, we'd be in the crap, because at present, we simply do not have any other top level FB available. One of the likely candidates, Gaspar, Glass, Carroll or Lynch, has to be selected as the most ideal FB, and hammered into the position. Whoever our backup FB is, he's going to need experience- perhaps the most sensible way to run things, is every three or four games, if McIntosh is a bit proppy, or we've got a particularly arduous road trip or what have you, get one of the young'uns to make the trip instead. That way, we let a new FB earn their stripes without one eye on the bench all game, and we hopefully extend McIntosh's career for another couple of years- the longer we have Milli to take care of the high quality FFs, the more time guys like Glass have to learn.

Its the old dilemma between putting the best team on paper out on the ground each week, or blooding talent for later years, and how much game time guys like Glass get is going to largely depend on how well we're playing as a team. One thing is certain, though- if we get to the end of '03 with no bona fide replacement FB for McIntosh, we're going to be in a bit of hot water the following year if Milli decides to give it away.

I know what you're saying. It is going to be an incredibly delicate process for Woosh to try and give all these extremely raw (albeit talented) young talls the game-time they need to take over once Milli, Willow and Jak hang up the boots.

The hardest thing is that if Woosh wants to continue playing the older blokes like Milli (and I definitely think he should) then there is really only room in the side for one of either Glass, Lynch or Carroll, otherwise we are robbed of another small to rotate through the middle.

So really the first thing that Woosh has to do is make the decision of who he thinks will be the first to retire out of the older blokes (most likely McIntosh) and then also decide on just who it is that he thinks has the ability to take over next year. He then has to commit to playing that bloke in every game next year.

In fact that was the one thing I was critical about last year with Woosh. I'm still confident that Darren Glass is our next full back, and I thought that after an extremely promising start to the year, Woosh very quickly lost confidence in him and was too willing to just banish him to the WAFL.

Hey Jod,

I was wondering how long it was going to be until a female poster said something :)

Geez, Jod's a worry.. every since Lioness and EF started chasing all over him, he's acting like James Bond (the Roger Moore version)

And he can't even get the grammar right...it should be "they're", not "there" in both sentences.

Who'd want to hop into the sack with someone who can't even use good grammar? (no, don't answer that girls...)
