Adelaide v Port Power
Friday 24 October
7:10pm
Coopers Stadium

We're coming off a loss to North Melbourne while Port had a surprisingly convincing win over Hawthorn.

We're 3-0 in AFLW Showdowns, but bar the first one, they've been fairly tight contests. A win will shore up our Finals chances while killing off Port's. Can we get the job done?

Munyard is available for selection this week after playing three quarters of the scrimmage match last week, and Gould may also be available if she gets through the main training session today. Pretty incredible that they're back, I had essentially drawn a line through them for this season!

Boyle-Carr is also available, apparently she missed last week due to a head knock against West Coast. She passed the concussion tests, but has a history of concussion so they decided to play it safe. They'll test her again this week and if she passes again, she'll be available for selection.

No word on Randall other than she "continues to be monitored closely as she recovers from concussion".

Assuming Randall isn't available, that means it's only her and McKee on our injury list.

Starting to think Randall may be forced into retirement sadly

This has lingered a while now

She did it on September 14th, so it's been over a month. Very concerning signs.

Even if she finally came good now, would you really want her back on the footy field, given the way she plays? She seems to pick up at least one concussion per season. Scary stuff.

Yep, they have to retire her. Quality of life is far more important than footy.

Who would you drop this week?

Assuming Munyard, Gould and Boyle-Carr are all available, my preference would be:

Out: Tarlinton, Smith
In: Gould, Munyard

I'd leave Boyle-Carr out for now, but I suspect the club will drop Mueller and bring her back in.
I would leave Tarlinton in to use as back up ruck as she is no worse than SLT etc and then we could play Gould as a permanent forward to ease her back in and put extra pressure on their defence .
This would allow us to use Hatchard more, to use her body strength in midfield against their younger mids and hopefully give her more endurance for finals ahead ,

That's a surprising, but welcome change! Jess Allan just hasn't quite managed to hit her stride this year after being so good the last two seasons.

SLT omitted as well.

The full changes are:

In: Gould, Martin
Out: J. Allan, Thompson

Martin back is not particularly exciting, she is just another one of the rotating cast of "probably will get delisted but hey, see what you can do!" players. From Harper's comments, sounds like they'll continue trying to play her up forward despite her being unable to kick further than 25m. Maybe she'll do a tagging job on one of Port's rebounding defenders? I guess in reality she's just keeping Munyard's seat on the bench warm.

Good to see Gould back! I guess Munyard, Randall and Boyle-Carr all didn't get up given than none are listed as emergencies (which are SLT, Leuzzi and Cronin). It's a bit concerning that both Randall and Boyle-Carr are seemingly suffering from prolonged concussion symptoms now. Ballard is presumably still trapped in a U-bend somewhere, the club has forgotten she even exists.

So... does this mean Tarlinton will be given a full game to ruck? Or will Gould share the role with her? Or Hatchard? Or hell, why not put Sarah Allan in there, we've played her everywhere else so far this season.

Tarlinton is not a good ruck and she's up against Scholz, one of the best ruck in the competition. I'm sure it will be shared with Gould and Hatchard. Though we will need Gould up forward, so maybe they'll just persist with losing the ruck contest. Don't have a good feeling about this match.

Yes, which is why I'm pleasantly surprised to see that Jess Allan was dropped for form. We desperately need her, but we also need to send a message that her current output isn't good enough.

This is also a good chance to say to Tarlinton, here's your chance to prove yourself against a genuine young gun of the competition.

I'm at the stage this season where, as much as I'd like to see us keep winning and getting back into form, I don't think it hurts that much if we lose more matches. It's hard to see anyone getting over North this year anyway, and you learn a lot more from a loss. Let's expose some cracks to see which ones run the deepest, so whoever the new coach is can hit the ground running in patching them up.

As you know you won’t find a harsher critic of Jess Allan’s season performance than me, I was right on it from the start of the season, she totally ROB’ed it up… but to do it this week against old ‘Gift wrapped’ Scholz does reek a little bit of cut off your nose to spite your face stuff. If you drop her for her form I think you do it 2 weeks ago.

I see Martin getting another game as Matthew Clarke’s tribute to Lachie Murphy as a ‘round the boys/girls’ selection of a soon-to-be delisted good club-person… but don’t get me started on her getting a game in front of Leuzzi 🙄

What about A Ballard 😒

Bizarre selections to be honest.

Seems weird to drop Allan in a week when our backup ruck is returning from a wrist injury. Surely we don't want Gould in the ruck

Martin in when there are better players on the list is baffling.

I think we're now paying the price for using list spots on depth that has no room for improvement. There's only 7 depth spots on a list of 28 senior players. To use a few of those spots on Martin, Thompson, and Ballard who we seemingly don't want to play at all is poor list management. You could argue Brooke Smith shouldn't be there either, that's 4 of 7 depth spots

What about A Ballard 😒

You won't get an argument from me. I would say that I remain a fan of hers, but it's hard to say since I can barely even remember what she looks like, she's played so little AFLW footy lately.

Unless she has gone backwards badly, I don't understand how she's not getting a game, or even a spot on the emergency list.

Midfield & decision making looked on par with the rest of the season, but really lucky Jones looks to have awoken from her slumber in the last couple of quarters she’s played... hopefully doesn’t disappear after a quarter like usual.

Also commentators pre-game; “jeez Scholz is a great player, Port really rely on her and she’s so good for a young player”, me like a crazy person at the screen; “yeah how about you scrutinise or mention how she ended up there in the first place”
