I think Hannebery sulks a bit because he takes all of this so seriously and really wants to win. In fact I don't even think it's sulking in the same way that Goodes has done before. Hanners doesn't whinge at the umpires, he does seem to find it hard to hide disappointment when we don't perform well. Not a horrible quality though, it shows this club really means something to him.
Yeah, probably not the Goodes style but the McVeigh style. Angry with himself, at other players when they screw up, pointing etc.

I prefer the Paul Kelly type as captain, 100% focused on the game and a leader by example type. Jobe Watson was magnificent last night and another who I'm huge fan of as a captain. Jack and Kennedy are the closest we have to that of the younger guys.

More I think about it I'd prefer Bolton to be our current captain but Goodes and McVeigh might be outstanding off field leaders.

We have been blessed with leaders if Jude has never been one, his attack on the ball late in the game was unbelievable, just love him

Yeh I know what you mean, AG. Playing rugby, I also prefer the captain who doesn't get too demonstrably upset and who shouts and yells constantly but remains composed and level-headed in what he says and will not stop leading by example. They are far more effective captains I've always thought. It's hard to keep taking the other kind of captain seriously too I've always found.

Jack very stiff, only put Jetta ahead of him because when he fumbled running into goal Jetta didn't.

I do not think Hannebery sulks as previously stated he does take the game very seriously and is a chatterbox of the field. I could care less if Goodes remonstrates with the umpires and shows his emotions, he is a superb footballer and I call it nitpicking. He and McVeigh are superb leaders on and off the field by all accounts, we have been very lucky as a football club to have some great captains.

5. Richards
4. Grundy
3. Jetta
2. Shaw
1. ROK

A fair few are stiff, but these guys I felt were the difference. Grundy's game has been underrated, he was absolutely terrific. Every bit as good as Richards defensively, but a couple of mistakes drops him down. Still fantastic though.

I'd also say Mattner was very good. Made a few mistakes and so good enough to get in the votes but gee he throws himself at everything, body be damned. Really love the way he takes the game on. Hard to judge anybody for the final quarter as I think the team were stuffed. Too many underdone players and 3 quarters of working their butts off to chase & pressure in a high speed game that would be foreign to most of them. Horse took a gamble and it paid off.

Don't agree. Had one good term. Made critical errors and his drop of pace is bewildering him forcing him to kick on the right and also running to far without bouncing.

He was pretty good for me as well, wasn't perfect but considering how many times he threw himself in front to spoil 3rd man up was fantastic. Probably one of the best in the competition in that role.

I think Mattner has regressed this season.

His 1% work is fine, but IMO he's struggling with the rest of his game.
He either will not or can't take an intercept mark any more.
He had one marking attempt yesterday and the ball went straight through his hands. The rest of the time he has got into this habit of punching the ball away. Whereas once he was excellent at getting the ball to the boundary, it is now just an indiscriminate hit, even when he has the time and space to actually mark the ball.
The run and pace has gone out of his game and yesterday his disposal efficiency was just 50% (16 possessions). The d/e was the worst of any of our players.

I think Mattner simply does not do enough offensively these days.
He averages 13 disposals, 3 marks, 2 rebound 50s per game and less than 1 bounce per game.
Defensively he averages tackles 3.5 and 3.6 1%s per match.

All of those stats are below his 2011 averages.

It's noticeable that when a game needs saving Longmire has got into the habit of moving ROK back. A player who can take an intercept mark. Mattner should be capable of filling that role.

I don't think Mattner is really asked or counted on to give us 20 plus possessions from HB anymore. In his first 2 years that was the case but not anymore. I think he is just asked to clamp down on whoever he is playing on and help out his other defenders by being the 3rd man in the contest when possible.

I imagine he isn't in the top 10 of our B&F this year but I also imagine he has received solid votes from the coaches for doing his job most weeks.

Whilst it's great for us that we don't rely on ROK to dominate in the midfield anymore because his size, fitness, strong marking and kicking skills are useful up forward and down back as well, on Saturday night it would've been great to throw someone of his quality into the middle when Essendon were on a roll.

This is the point where the loss of Parks becomes noticeable

A leader in the Paul Kelly mode, do as I do, I don't have to say much, type player. I still remember Kells giving those stern looks and players knowing.....
