The Hawks host the Swans fresh from a big 60 point win over North Melbourne to shoot up to second on the VFL ladder early in the season. The Swans have not really got their season going just yet, having only won one game of the three games they have played to date (together with a draw last Sunday against the Suns). The Lions kicked off their season with a comfortable 41 point win over the stand-alone Coburg Lions, but then lost to the Tigers at the end of March by 12 points and then saw bad kicking leave them short of a victory against the Suns.

The Swans' most recent match was a relatively even affair for much of the day, but nevertheless, the Swans will be kicking themselves that they let a golden opportunity to secure a win slip through their fingers. The Swans eased out to a three goal lead mid-way through the third quarter, but allowed the Suns to tighten the contest to a goal difference at three-quarter time. Each time the Swans took the lead in the last quarter, the Suns were able to counter and the match ended in a draw.

The contest between Box Hill and North Melbourne, in the meantime, was relatively close for the first half, with North Melbourne hitting the front momentarily in the second quarter. However, Box Hill put the foot down just before half-time, opening up a 18 point lead at the long break. Box Hill kept North Melbourne at arm's length for the majority of the third quarter, with North Melbourne unable to close the gap during the third quarter. With the resistance then broken, Box Hill poured it on in the final quarter, kicking six goals to one in the last quarter to run out 60 point winners and putting Box Hill back in the top four after the round. Calsher Dear was a stand-out during the game, kicking four goals in his most impressive performance since being drafted to Hawthorn last year under the father-son rule. Sam Butler also kicked three goals for Box Hill to put the pressure on the selectors to reward strong performances at VFL level, while Ethan Phillips snagged 17 marks in defence in his first game back after injury.

The Hawks played keeping's off with North Melbourne, racking up 349 disposals to 277 to North Melbourne for the game, while the Hawks also recorded 103 marks to North Melbourne's 68 marks. The Hawks were rewarded for their attack on the footy, earning 31 free kicks for the game compared to North Melbourne's 17 free kicks. To put it mildly, it was a strong bounce-back performance by Box Hill after losing to the Suns the week previous while Werribee and Williamstown lost to allow the Hawks to jump into the top two, a win behind Footscray who have a perfect 4-0 start to the season.

The game, as usual, will be broadcast on 3WBC 94.1FM while the AFL site will carry a stream of the game (as well as a video on demand post-match for those unable to watch it live).

If the swans drew with the suns that’s good form should be an interesting game
That was my thought. 1-1-2 makes it seem like we should be on top easily, but the suns trounced us. Looks like the game was at Sydney though, so clearly no humidity ;)

Anybody know if 3wbc broadcast these days ? Nothing on their website.

I’m in the garage for the day and don’t watch online when working… might have to just listen to the video feed

Commentator: "Sydney drew with Gold Coast 60 a piece, Box Hill went down to Gold Coast 88 to 45 Based on that this should be a close game."

40 seconds later "They all diverge on the ball"

Where TF do they find these imbeciles?

Chad Wingard is in amongst it. Goal puts us in the lead.

Some meh umpiring but biggest issue is we are struggling in the air.

Sydney have taken so many contested marks at this point I’ve lost count. Lads need to at least even the contests at the minute, not just let them get good body position.

A lot of their forward 50 entries have been off the back of a clean contested mark win and launching into an attack
