AFL Autopsy Round 5: 49 Point loss to Collingwood

Do any of our fwds know how to lead? To hit up and create an option for incoming ball carrier? Other than when Stringer was hit lace out from Zerrett, all I saw were blokes standing flat footed ushering to kick to a one on one. Joe’s just plain lazy & just thinks he can mark everthing from behind & sides are working him out.

I lost count of the amount of times (1st half) we streamed into our f50, only for th ball carrier to have statues in front. Resting fwd pockets don’t know how to create space for KPF to lead into either.

As for ball retention....we’d have to be the worst side in the competition.

Our leading players for inside 50 are constantly zaka, heppel, parish and daniher himself. Got to the point of why bother leading at those blokes, none of them can hit a target inside 50. They need to work on getting merret, mcgrath, goddard to be the ones leading the inside 50's.

Yes the forwards also need to lead better, but maybe swinging a hurley/hooker fwd to demand the ball would have helped. Almost 2 whole quarters without a goal means something should have been tried.

Players were poor but the coaching was worse.

Bit of a strange game - 4 out of 5 of Collingwood's first goal were shank goals with no defined plan - This then got Collingwood on a roll - Felt like EFC conceded the game at half time to concentrate on Sunday, hence chipping the ball around in the second half - It was strange how often Collingwood got scores from their back half.

Have previously posted that EFC will go nowhere unless they tidy up their kicking - Lose to Melbourne on Sunday, then expect younger players to be given priority - Need to get McGrath back to the midfield and I am confident Guelfi can play defence - Bring in McNiece for Baguley, Langford for Begley and Mutch for Green.

call them shank goals, but 3 of those were one on one contest on baguely, where he couldnt even get near making it a 50/50. Think 4 or 5 for the day. Great service but has been past it for a year. Shouldnt have been picked. Coaches should not have allowed his match up to keep dragging him to the goal square isolating him on one on one.

POOR coaching. The goals were flukey but it was actually a defined plan by collingwood, so no defined plan is completely incorrect.

Daniher is usually a very good field kick, whilst Zaharakis and Parish aren't too bad either generally.

This team, and club as a whole is spineless. I said it two weeks ago. Most people overreacted as they do last week when we beat Port. I didn't celebrate that because i know the EFC is stuffed. Our true colours were again put on display on anzac day. Biggest H/A game of the season and we put up that performance? If the coaches aren't crucifying the players this morning then something is seriously wrong. I said it 2 weeks ago I'll say it again, I'll say it again in 5 years, this club is spineless. Has been for 15+ years. They'll come out and beat Melbourne this week and everyone will forget anzac day. Then lose again the week week and on and on it goes, this Essendon rollercoaster going absolutely no where. John worsefold was one of the hardest players to play the game, to me he's sounding like an absolute panzy in his pressers, he needs to get angry and show some damn emotion. That performance yesterday was the most embarrassing display I've seen probably forever given the Anzac spirit etc. This club is a joke. The most embarrassing part about yesterday was the bitching like little schoolgirls our on the ground. What an absolute joke. Brendard Goddard is a whiny little bitch he's been doing it for years now, Chappy was 100% on the money about this twat. So your team mate stuffed up? You don't act like that on the ground you ****ing Muppet.

What was apparent to me watching from home, was how stagnant we appeared to be coming out of defence. Collingwood shut us down very well by guarding the space, and Saad aside, we seemed to have no one who even threatened to break through with any regularity.

The absence of Gleeson and McKenna is really hampering us but we also don’t appear to run hard enough to create options in the first place.

Our work rate is putrid.
I thought this too - flatfooted, I said in the game day thread at the time. It was like the pressure of the first Q wore us out and then Belgley's injury took the wind out of our sails - which, i suppose, is that we were mentally flattened too from the 2nd Q onward.

Really? Must be watching different games, take a look next week and how often these blokes when streaming forward will kick a ball that lands on grass, near no one or straight to the opposition. Not even to 50/50 i mean complete shanks that are rebounded twice as quickly. They are good players with roles to play, but vision and foot skills going fwd are not there strengths. Honestly ask any opposition supporters what they think of the kicking skills of the 3 blokes mentioned.

I think you are being too easy on our team structure and set ups. Ill take merret, mcgrath, goddard, hurley over any of those.

So, on the one hand we're soft and lazy and on the other when BJ shows some passion about how we should be playing that's whiny? I felt a lot better about the game after watching Whoosha's presser. Having an on-field leader who shows he's competitive is a good thing. If players allow an on-field spray to undermine the team then that's the attitude we need to address, not the obvious wanting to win at all costs that BJ brings to our game.

We got 99 problems but Goddard getting a bit grumpy isn’t really one of them.

I’d rather he did it in a different manner to what he did yesterday, mind you, but compared to the structural issues and the refusal to work harder, it barely registers as a blip on the problem radar.

And he’s done way too much for the club to deserve fans calling him a twat and a whiny bitch and a ****ing muppet.

Ask any opposition fan what they think of him, I think near 95% of them will say he's an arrogant flog. So, Zaka did something lazy. Ok, let him cop a spray from the coaches or his captain. That most likely won't happen as they are spineless, so wait until the game is over and have an argument in the sheds. Or at worse in the huddle when there's not 90,000 and hundreds of thousands watching it closr up on tv. people looking at you whining to your team mate. It's a shocking image for the club.

I could not give less of a damn about what opposition fans think of Goddard.

Again, I didn’t particularly like what I saw yesterday but it’s a long, long way down the list of things wrong with us at the moment.

The key thing here is that they got a (multiple) genuine 1 on 1 inside their 50 through quick ball movement, this is a situation our forwards rarely get.

Definitely agree. Football comes first but it's just annoying as it gives journo's etc. another chance to talk negatively about the club during the week about non football issues. Which is probably a good thing considering our football.

If there's any club that has experience in dealing with negative press it's ours.

They've all been poor this season, but in previous years Daniher's field kicking has been quite good, whilst Parish and Zaharakis aren't usually particularly poor.

All three have significant upside based on actual past performance in their kicking.

I think Zaharakis is about what he usually is, occasionally he'll drop a super game but mostly he's a poor man's Gaff or Scully.

It's hard to judge Parish; he's a young player who hasn't been super, but the team around him has also been very poor.

Daniher got talked up last season about being one of the special young players in the comp. Anzac Day medal, mark of the year. He's soaked it all in and came out the other side thinking he's already Wayne Carey. That's his problem, he thinks he's already there when he's still developing.

Agreed with that; he looks like he's trying to build the highlight reel instead of doing the grunt work at times. Less time playing for free kicks and trying to sit on people's heads, more times doing the basics please.

Franklin builds his games off being a physical presence as much as kicking the fantastic goals, I think Daniher is as capable as any of being the best key forward in the game over the next 5-10 years, but he needs to develop that edge Franklin has if he wants to get there.

Whether he's injured or not I don't know, but we all know he's capable of so much more than he's giving at the moment, which is so frustrating for the supporters.
