I agree that Elliot delivers the ball well (he's a class player so he should do so) but I'd prefer him spending 5% of the game in the middle rather than the 20-30% he's currently doing. We need goals. Hawthorn sometimes run Breust through the guts, but its very rarely cos they need him up front also.

And in my mind....Wills is never again in our midfield, unless he's taking the water bottles out to them.

Elliot isn't kicking goals when he plays forward though..

Depends.. I like Cox playing forward if he's in form. When he's in current form he can't play though.

See I disagree. He'll never regain "form" playing AFL 9's with the rest of the dregs. He's still a threat which is something Cameron just isn't.
In my book we've got to reinstate the forward line (or as much of it that we can) that we started the season with:

Elliot Mihocek WHE

Stepho Cox A. Crumber/defensive forward (Maybe Apples, Broomhead, Sidey)

We are getting smashed on the Couch like it’s an episode of Backroom Casting Couch.

been watching.

would’ve like some analysis on how we’ve allowed such accurate scores last two weeks (ie expected Goal difficulty vs results etc.).

would’ve also preferred Gaz to say we cannot win it. Cause some pain to the boys to hear they’ve been written off, maybe fire them up seeing bucks won’t do it!

And watch some horrible teans we truly hate go up the ladder while we stagnate /decline - next few years looking bleak

Not so certain of bleak years, let's face it we are from playing potential - we have a good core of some v good players who are terribly out of form and some promising signs from some v young players.

Couple of good trade ins like a KPF, build a good culture (i:e not 'nice' footballers or coaches) and then we'd be in it. Whether that is acted on who knows, I'd hope so.

But let's not pretend we're in it this year or the past two. Oh so close but oh so far, have gotten by on system more than anything else. Right now with the list we have and the style we play at best we're making up the numbers and nothing else.

but part of the joy of winning a premiership is the social aspect and bragging rights

Bragging rights?! If we we're to win it this year it would be our most revered flag of all time. period.

I think you're dismissing the season coz we won't be or can't, not because the season is flawed / compromised.

Agree Cox is a threat

Most of THIS, THIS and almost THIS!

Why have the selectors derailed the consistency of the entire team by "attempting to find new strings for players bows?"
We've LOST key players (Howe down back, JDG up front and Pendles, Sidey and Treloar for large chunks from our midfield) our AA Ruckman is functioning at 75% (If he's not carrying some sort of injury I'll go hee) and we're treading water trying to contain a huge case of CONFIDENCE SAP by playing a slow, ineffective, doggedly flawed game plan.

But why have our selectors contributed to the malaise by "rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic"?

By drafting Cameron as a "replacement for Cox" they've effectively downgraded the big American to a seconds player, they didn't give him a run in the ruck or stand up in the press and build up the big yank, instead they've seemingly stamped Mason's papers and sent him to purgatory. Cameron is in fact another back up ruckman, he's not a forward and this has unbalanced the side from the get go. NOT his fault, this was simply toying with the team structure on a whim.

Early in the year (and with Cox and JDG in the team) we tried various young mids in the side rather than giving Braidyn Sier his chance. Yes we were trying to replace the injured Treloar at the time but by NOT playing Sier (AND making it worse by playing Rupert Wills) the midfield balance was never established. Jamie Elliot and JDG went through the midfield and interestingly enough found that when they actually burst forward with the ball and looked up, they had NO Cox, No JDG or No Elliott to kick to. Our selectors had actually CAUSED two problems in trying to fix one.

Stephenson on a wing, Crisp in the middle, "resting Roughhead against Freo", the numbers of unnecessary bloopers our selectors have been making have cost us just as much confidence as Bucks and Sidey's Covid exploits.

All the people talking about sacking the president and the coach, delisting 50% of the players and burning down the Holden Centre need reminding: We can only change things at the end of this season, we're stuck with the players, coaches and officials that we have. What we have to do now is to make the best of the cattle that we have available to us.

Cox for all his deficiencies is still our best tall target deep in the forward line, just as Jamie Elliott, WHE and Stepho are better forwards. If Pendles needs replacing, then do so from the mids we have in the two's. Blokes like Rantall for instance (recruited as a mid), or heaven forbid JT.
Before his 2018 tour de force, JT was a mid. In fact before his break from footy, he was an up and coming midfielder. Why wouldn't you give him a run in his preferred position before hurting the forward line by taking Elliott out of it?

Instead of playing an ageing and tiring Chris Mayne across half back to cover for Howe....why not re-introduce a tall, young half back who plays a lot like Howe? Nathan Murphy could actually do that job and not unsettle the side. It's called Like for Like...not "lets try and make this out of that".

So in my longwinded way I wanted to applaud HFF for his opinion. Why don't we pick a side that's balanced by putting the best players we have at our disposal in their BEST positions?
Great post...

Which very young players are showing promising signs just out of interest?

Quaynor and who?

Well, I think the season is cooked now. It’s probably a blessing... it would have been our luck to win a tainted flag if we’re ever going to win one.

Something just isn’t right - the midfield looks awful without Pendlebury. Really awful. Other than Maynard, Sidebottom and maybe Moore.... just terrible.

Blood the kids.

MAYBE MOORE? He was close to BOG for both sides. Funny how some people see football differently.

Daicos is one imo, and the ones who haven't debuted yet either. Browns have potential, wouldn't write off the Bos either - too small a sample size.

Agreed. Daicos has been good. He just needs to learn to take the first option. Noble has been good, at least he is trying to take the game on with run and carry, more then our senior players are doing.
Funny, everyone was calling for Sier to come back in. I don't think he or Wills are up to AFL standard. Both to slow and not enough work rate. Let's give Sier another week and see how he goes, maybe a game under his belt with do him the world of good.

I think I was still livid with him for that turnover in a low-scoring game. But yes, he was certainly good. I didn't have him as best on, I had him third though (Maynard & Sidebottom ahead).

We are all hurting and I feel your frustration. Let hope we turn it around.

Expecting composure out of a 20-game player who has rarely had a consistent string of games is a big ask...

I really think we need to fast-track Quaynor into the midfield. I dunno if he’s top-end speed fast, but he plays fast, and that’s what we need.

Handy that he has a couple of brothers too. Already Isaac is a good clubman. ;)

Hopefully they dont can the acadamies.
