Note: this is in no way blaming the umpires for last night's loss, and isn't about last night but generally about Darren Jolly in the ruck
Is it just me, or does Jolly get a rough ride as ruckman. The opposing ruck man often seems to have 2 hands in Jolly back at throw-ins, yet never gets penalised for it, whilst Jolly gets penalised for basically contesting the throw in. I often go to games, so don't see close up on the ruck infringements. Does Jolly get a rough deal, or is he just clumsy?

Mate, the ruck rules are more confusing than just about any other. It seems an absolute lottery half of the time. You hear a whistle and just pray it's your way.

Sometimes I think guys like Jolly, Mumford etc get penalised for being stronger, as they seem to outmuscle the players at the contest.

Yeah, I swear they periodically pay a free kick based on a coin toss once every 1 and 3/8 quarters ;)

Bit of both really! The other player that gets man handled week in is Cloke. Yet when our players touch opposition forwards in one on one contests they get the easy free!

I lost my **** at that point :p
At a crucial stage too. Gave them momentum going into half time. Channel 7 didn't show the replay ( ) of the Tarrant-Franklin reversal when Cloke had a shot, but would be willing to bet it was softer than Bryce Gibbs, as those sorts of frees against us usually are.

I seriously think it is because Cloke is big and strong, it makes it look like he can handle a push, while the likes of Franklin amd N Riewoldt are lighter-framed and can get pushed off it more easily.

That was another point where my usually calm demeanour was "tested" ;).

Yeah he gets destroyed by the umps most weeks. Got held by Hale yet Hale got the free in the second qtr.

That one was actually paid against Maxwell for blocking Franklin's run actually.

It's just frustrating at games the Ruck infringement. you see contests where both ruckman hold each other and it's fine, then others where you swear one bloke is being held and it calls a block on the guy being held or something stupid. It's just so frustrating.

At times you just wish you let the two big men play and contest and leave it be unless it's really blatant

There are no ruck rules, it's just a coin toss generally waited to penalise jolly for being the stronger ruckman

Yeah I know, but Jolly was still held. How can you pay one free but not the other? It's like the one in the third qtr when Tarrant had Buddy's arm and Franklin had a fistful of Tarrant's jumper, 10 metres out from their goal. Free to Buddy - goal. Just crap.

I agree with the other stuff you said, I just wish it got left alone, it's beyond ridiculous.

Very true. It's why it's so frustrating. You see holding all the time in the ruck contest, where normally it's just two guys trying to get the upper hand, yet they pay the minimal crap when it's barely there. It really is a 50-50, and it's funny as you regularly see the ruckman looking confused when the whistle go ad you can just see them praying it goes their way. Hale got a couple of cheapies and a couple of cheapies against him and when you see the replay you just shake your head. Just makes you wonder what the umpires sees or is he just guess's

Hope you guys don;t mind me intruding on your board. Ruck infringements are a big bear of mine and just thought I'd enter the discussion
