Having watched a lot of football this year, I'm livid with the way that the ruck contests are umpired. The number of times inferior ruckmen don't watch the ball and jump straight at an opponent is terrible. The Lions have lost two ruckmen to knee injuries due to this, and Adam Goodes has also been curtailed as well.

The umpires around the square need to watch the contest and pay a free kick when a ruckman jumps into his opponent without any regard for the ball. If they pay it a few times, then more than likely the incidents will stop. They also have to introduce the larger circle so ruckmen can't have a massive run up and leap.

So in other words, they should bring back the wrestling at the centre bounce that got Matty Primus two AA guernseys?

ruck contests are overumpired to the max, it should be a test of strength particularly at boudary throw ins, and at centre bounces if u can jump over the bloke or protect the drop zone where the ball will land, then thats the whole point of it. friday nights game saw barely a dead ball situation go without someone being called for holding or shepherding. let them go at it, use their brains and bodies and only call the patently obvious

They still have the line across the middle, and they should institute that contact with the other ruckman can not be made until the ball is beginning to drop. If Primus stars under that system so be it, but he had a penchant for holding the other ruckman down with one arm and clearing with the other. By limiting contact that would take that part of the game away.

Watch Josh Fraser...

The game against the Lions, Fraser spent the whole time watching Charman and jumping into him early. Knobel was doing the same to Keating (..when he wasn't pushing him in the back at boundary throw ins!). I know it happens against all clubs, but it is a serious issue that needs to be looked at!

watched him $h!7 himself when keating ran towards him during the GF, one of the softest performances.

great around the ground performance, and 19 or 20 touches, but where it counted, keating smashed him

Exactly! I was watching the Essendon v Pies game from a few weeks ago and constantly saw him watch Hille come towards him at the centre bounce. Up would go the knee, then the tap. Shocking performance from someone that should be establishing himself as a premier centreman. Instead, he's playing scared.
