I just wanted to say how good it is to see St. Kilda with a decent rucking combination. From what I've seen Gardiner and King should make our midfielders at least 10% better this year, as well as being a 50% improvement on previous ruckmen.

It's been a long time coming. Only now can we fully appreciate the extent of Thomas' folly. Spider was our last decent ruckman. Since then we've gone through Monkhorst, Capuano, Hackland, Matty Clarke (good but short term) and made do with Rix (serviceable at best), Blake (have a lot of time for him, but not a ruckman), and Kosi (not a ruckman).

I was actually looking forward to every centre bounce at the Dome last night. Given Lyon's record with stoppages at Sydney, and decent ruckmen to implement his plans, St. Kilda should improve immensely even without our incredibly potent forward line.

I totally agee, its enjoyable to watch centre bounces and knw at best the other rucman can only equal our ruck skills.

Want to see more of Gardiner resting in forward line and Kosi at centre half back.

its important to keep these guys fit andf healthy. we have now got the ruckman to allow kosi to stay forward 100% off the games. we keep king and gardiner fit and playing well like they are at the minute and kosi fraser and nick forward and occassionalyt chuck one of the resting ruckman down there how are other teams going to man up 4 of them. injuries have killed us in the past but this year i have a good feeling. come on sainters...

Agree, the midfielders are already benefiting from having Ruckman, also look a lot more dangerous when their are boundary throw-ins in our forward line, which is something we have always lacked imo.

WOOHOO WE HAVE RUCKMEN

about time lol

2 all australian ruckmen should be interesting if they can keep fit and work together we should have the most dominant midfield in afl.
look against richmond and essendon with weaker midfields. we ran riot through the middle
only problem against bombers is when you have no one too kick to up forward and no one down back to stop their goals it makes it hard

it should all mould together nicely this year

just curious guys, cos i can only afford a rookie...will Van Rheenan get a game this season if you guys get injuries?

Yeah, if three of King, Gardiner, Kosi (possible given their history) and Rix were injured, then VanRheenen would get a game.

But it would take those three to be out for him to crack a spot ...

Yep,

He's not ready yet. He won't play in 2008 unless we lose the 4 players OWTS has mentioned.

And being St Kilda, that might actually happen. :o

I'm with you guys.

Both our sides have been deprived of a good ruck combination and both the pies and saints now look to have a set combination, although both sides have a different set-up.

Ruckman are hugely important, and I think it will only benefit st.kilda with Gardiner and King up and running.

So who is number 1 in your opinion of the 2.

I think Kingy will have the title to start with, but Gardiner when fully fit might pass him.

This is one of many reasons why Ross Lyon will be a significant improvement on Grant Thomas. RL rates ruckmen and considers them importaint. He has recruited players to fill a spot that was very weak.

I have been surprised how much the new guys have influenced games - King dropping back and Gardi just a scary unit.

Both haven't even quite got their touch yet - Kingy has missed a few marking contests by a couple of metres (this will change) and when Gardi gets his confidence up the marks will start sticking.

I was a little disappointed the Saints didn't go for Wood (who will provide Collingwood with good service), so I hope McEvoy is good - we have given up a known for an unknown (at AFL level).

However, in the short term these guys look great, with backup from Kosi. Hopefully Rix will be a decent back-up in defence, and can pinch hit in the ruck.

$100 that in 10 years time McEvoy is a better player than Wood ...

1). Kosi at CHB is a massive waste. Should never happen. The guy can turn a game in 1 Qtr in the forward line.

2). Surely we can't rely on Rix in the back line? If he gets a game, it's got to be as a crash-n-bash ruckman, in there to hit the Jeff Whites/ Dean Coxes etc

3). We've gone from a non-existant Ruck division to an extremely competant ruck division...great work by the coach

You have two of the best 5 ruckmen in the league at your club, Kossie and Gardiner and Stephen King is quite possibly the most influentual Ruckman in the game ATM If you guys can't win a flag this year... you are about 40 years away from EVER winning one!

I agree with all three points.:thumbsu:

It was pointed out on the MMM Radio commentary and in the footy record that Stephen King had played in 3 Grand Finals in 5 games - all victorious as it turned out!

I think you guys did the best recruiting, for where a club is at and what is needed, since the inception of the Draft.

King - AA, Premiership player, 193 games under 30. Proven performer over a decade.

Gardinier - AA, Premiership Player, 129 games under 30. Before me started self destructing & injuries was in the top 3 Rucks playing. Lets hope he is desperate to play footy and only concentrates on that.

Schnider - Premiership player, 100 gamer. Averages 1.3 goals (playing for Sydney) and 3 tackles a game. A proven player who plays well in big games. I rate this guy.

Dempster - Premiership player, in the 50-100 games range at 24 years old. Tall fast rangey HBF winger. You guys dodn't really have many of that sort. Great get for nothing.

Well done Saints and Ross Lyon. My Heart is with you guys for the flag his year, You will need to double the size of your trophy cabinet ;) srry (Hawks are a year or 2 of yet, we need more experiance)

With you best 22 IMO as listed below you have an:
  • Average age of 26 years 3 months
  • Games Played of 163
  • 30+: 3
  • 25-30: 8
  • 21-24: 9
  • under 21: 3
  • Average height 6' 2' (188cm) Footy wire
  • Average weight 89.5 kg

So Sainters i think your coach has done a great job so far to put you in a position to have a fair crack. IMO nothing beats experiance. You may be a bit short of youngens coming through but you can only plan for where you are at and some people at St Kilda have done a great job.

Good luck on the Season and that is what any team who wins the flag had and that is luck.

I know there is no Clarkes or Fiora.. I dont think they are up to it under pressure and they are to injury prone, but only my opinion.

But what you do have is experienced back up when you get injuries (a normal amount not the 752 you had last year)

Gardiners last quarter in the NAB GF gave me great hope that he can bea valuable payer in 2008.

King I was already sold on and in particular when contrasting with the Saints ruck stocks since Everitt left.

Then with the young McEvoy there is alos now clear replacemen in severla years hence.

The recuiting and coaching team are at last achivinga team with good balance.

Xavier is a lock in the 22 mate.

Other than that, nice in-depth post.
