I think this is thread worthy as it is worth the discussion.

I am happy about all these to be honest. I felt 3rd man up was happening to often and it was killing the ruckman. Im a traditionalist and prefer the 1v1 ruck contest.

Harsher interpretation on rushed behind rule. Yeah i noticed they went soft on that and it sort of went back to how it was pre 2008. I mean not AS bad but thry certainly stopped paying attention for it. I dont mind the rule to be honest.

The high contact rule is fair enough even if we have a couple of players that do it. I hate people saying the responsibility is on the tackler, whilst normally it should be yes, sometimes they tackler cant help it when players like Lindsay Thomas, Selwood or Shuey drop their knees and draw the contact, makes me annoyed when i see it.

Thoughts?

Novel rule change suggestion:

No rule changes for 12 months.

Any rule that enables Grundy to ply his trade without interference is a good thing for us.

Can Rule out McCarthy playing in the Ruck as the 3rd Man up would be Perfect for him

Normally I'd agree, but the no 3rd man up rule is excellent. It's something that had been killing traditional ruck duels, and significantly weakens teams like Geelong who rely heavily on a guy like Blicavs to go consistently as a 3rd man up in their contests.

If you are correct, sounds right what you're saying, and hence it benefits us....
I'm all for it, change is great :D stuff what I said before.

I'm very fickle if it benefits Collingwood :D

This is great news. A few opposition teams shitting bricks right now at the prospect of having to face genuine ruckman like Grundy 1 on 1.

Also lol at Geelong for getting the double blow of no third man up AND no ducking. A couple of very unhappy people in that midfield today!

The Duckwoods and Lindsay Thomas will hate that;)

First time in Hawthorn's 3 flag era that a rule change goes against them and they're already whinging. Also not surprised to see Geelong whinge about it too, but thought they'd be more preoccupied sooking about the AFL tightening up on a player's ability to draw a head high free.

What sooks. Why should players be able to interfere in ruck contests?

I hope those teams with no decent rucks enjoy the bath Grundy will give them.

It's taken a while for the AFL to move on the third man up.

Fair enough, it was obvious & made sense.

The rule changes make sense, ducking is blight on the game and contradicts the desire to protect the head and it's sensible to have only one interpretation of deliberately taking the ball out of play and a rushed behind should be treated the same as the boundary. In terms of third man up I'll always remember Maxwell's third man up effort to clear the footy in a final a few years back, but all ruck contests should be treated equally. At times Fraser and McKee were very effective together as dual ruckmen and we'd often have both in the centre. In the end the AFL said we had to nominate one and the 2004 ruck circle introduced to reduce knee injuries took this tactic out of the game.

The AFL certainly missed a needed opportunity tighten up blocking the man on the mark though.

Hawks can't have a Sook as they get just about all Free Kick.

FREE KICK HAWTHORN!!!!!!!

the last two agree with. third man up is not a new phenomenon and helps clear the area, don't agree with it

I think 3rd man up is a good change to many free kicks paid for blocking when idiots run into midfielders

or the mids were in the wrong spot in the 1st place

well yep that happens but i have seen these third man up jokers just run straight at whoever is in front of them then throw up the arms and cry to umps
so if it removes this from game im for it

I find it interesting that the AFL brought the third man up rule in party to protect the role of ruckman in our game. While I can see it protecting the primary ruckman I think it's another nail in the coffin of playing 2 rucks, which in turn makes it even more important to have a dominant number one ruck. I think we're better placed than a lot of sides in that regard.

agree with the argument about blocking, its a blight on the game on how the ump's interpret the rule,
but when used properly the third man up can be a great advantage. was in my day and still is.
l just don't like banning plays like this.
