Why does our great game constantly modify its rules?
Is there any other sport in the world where the rules change so frequently....?
Do you think the rules changes (and their frequency) are generally a good thing ?

What rule changes are you talking about?

Is there any other sport in the world where the rules change so frequently?

Are you concerned about frequency or severity?
American Football is one big rule maze.
Gaelic Football outlawed tackling.
RU has made a number of changes as well as rl.
Basketball brought in the three-pointer.
Cricket has changed it's popular format radically.
Soccer bought the big one in some time ago.

None of those examples compare to our game..

We have major rule changes yearly.

Too name some off the top of my head, hands in the back, the new interchaneg rules, the sub, the holding the ball, 15m kicks, the unpresured rush behind, centre bounce circle...

All of these have happenned in the fifteen years ive been watching football.

Basketball brought in the 3 pointer over 60 years ago.
Rugby has some minor changes to the rucks but the game is still identitcal
What has soccer changed?
I am a cricket umpire and know that the key rules are the same and have been for a hundred years

What I hate is the knee-jerk reactions and rule changes. Some people don't like something so by the next year it's changed, particularly lately. Running through the ball for a behind, the subrule because of injuries, etc. I'm still not convinced the sub rule did anything to impact injuries as they claimed at the time.

If something needs changing at least give it a trial pre-season and the opportunity for clubs to propose changes etc (i.e. at least a year). Not particularly in the group of "stop changing the game" but more like - change the game after due process.

Beg to differ but it's still the same game.

None of those are major law changes.

Basketball didn't have the 3 pointer when I was teenager.
RU has changed the kick from behind the 22 - a big tactiacal change.
rl changed from 5m to 10m - a significant change.
Soccer has the box now.
So they had 50 overs and 20/20 100 years ago?
Get real and start openning those eyes.

.

we have something called a rules committee. If you aren't seen to be doing anything you get the chop. To justify existing they need to be seen to be doing something so expect the rule changes to keep coming thick and fast.

Hockey (field hockey) abolished the offside rule in the 1990s.

I can't think of a bigger change in any sport in the last 20 years. Imagine if soccer were to do the same. Tactically the game has changed immeasurably.

The constant rule changes make it impossible to have good umpires, history is out the window and consistency does not exist.

The sooner Jeff Gieschen is out of his current job the better IMO.

They either need to stop and have one big over haul of the rules or just let the game evlove naturaly as it always did in the past.

A small tweak every 5 or so years is ok but knee jerk reactions to rules (that are not being officiated properly as it is) won't fix anything.

The game is as exciting as it has ever been but it just does not make sense most of the time.

Soccer brought in the penalty box and unrewarded passing to the goalie.
RU similarly unrewarded passing to the FB within the 22.
RL changed from unrestricted to six tackles and from 5m to 10m offside.
Gaelic Football banned tackling.
Most football codes have adjusted the bench.
