Clarke told to make a decision
By MICHELANGELO RUCCI
27sep05

VETERAN Adelaide ruckman Matthew Clarke has until the end of the week to decide if he will play on next year.

As 32-year-old Clarke remains uncommitted to the Crows, the deadline has been imposed to ensure Adelaide enters the AFL trade period on Monday aware if it will need to deal for a ready-made ruckman.
This may be more relevant amid surprising speculation that Collingwood is prepared to trade former No. 1 draft pick, 23-year-old ruckman Josh Fraser.

If Clarke signs a new one-year contract, Adelaide will have no need to barter for an experienced ruckman to support Rhett Biglands, cover the absence of injured lead ruckman Ben Hudson and bridge the transition time between draftees Ivan Maric and John Meesen becoming AFL ruckmen.

But if Clarke retires, Adelaide's planning for trade week will change. Fraser, the No. 1 draftee in 1999, would attract interest at West Lakes. In return, Collingwood may find value in Adelaide teenage forward Fergus Watts, a first-round draft pick who has asked to be traded to a Victorian-based club so he can return home to Melbourne.

All 16 AFL clubs can trade players and draft picks from next Monday until 1.30pm (SA time) next Friday.

So far, Adelaide has Watts on its trade list. Port Adelaide has young defender Stephen Gilham wanting to be on the Power's list.

Adelaide's list management was further shaped yesterday by defender James Begley retiring after 36 games with St Kilda and 25 with the Crows after joining the SA club in 2003. Adelaide says Begley, after meeting coach Neil Craig, agreed injuries had reduced his capacity.

Clarke played just six AFL games this season - the last five, including three finals, after Hudson needed to have his right knee reconstructed after Showdown XVIII.

His form, particularly in the finals against Port Adelaide and West Coast, justified the Crows' prudence in talking Clarke out of retirement this time last year.

And his stellar performances suggested Clarke would find new enthusiasm to continue into his 14th consecutive AFL season.

But so far Clarke has not given any such hint, not even at the Adelaide grand final breakfast at the weekend where he became aware of the Crows fans' eagerness to know of his intentions.

His answer suggested he was still uncertain.

Adelaide football manager John Reid yesterday declared the club was confident Clarke would be at West Lakes next season.

"It is not resolved fully, but everything in moving in the right direction," said Reid.

Despite Watts, Begley and midfielder-forward Chris Ladhams quitting, Adelaide will not delist any player before the trade period ends next Friday

Fraser for Watts? And they reckon pies supporters overvalue their players! Pies have plenty of young talls and would not be interested in Watts. Can't see Josh being traded unless a gun midfielder was gained in return. Even then, can't see it happening this year.

Who do they think we are? Fremantle? If that was too happen it would take more then one player (Clarke)

Seriously but folks, what role will Fraser play in the next Collingwood premiership? If anyone says ruck I'll throw up. While a straight swap wouldn't be a goer a deal could well be worth considering. Personally I'd want a quality midfielder for Fraser but at the end of the day you have to ask yourself what you can do with Josh. He isn't a CHF and he isn't a ruckman. What is he?

Versatility. What if your specialist ruckman or CHF gets injured at the 5 minute mark of the Grand Final?

"Fraser averages more goals per Grand Final than Wayne Carey." That would be my selling point.

Seriously though, he's not a bad player, and if he was put on the table, I'd be uber-suss about his injury if I was an oppo team, and as a Collingwood supporter.

But again, Rucci's an ass-clown so why pay attention.

Well you are probably in trouble just like if your FB, CHB or best midfielder goes down. You can't knock back a decent trade on the basis that the player you let go might be needed if you ever make a GF and if a ruck or CHF is injured in it. Besides, there would be other options like Tarrant/Rocca/Cloke/Cloke.

I think Josh has talent and he can be valuable but how valuable depends on finding him a role that doesn’t rely of what he doesn’t have. I just don’t know what, other than a 3rd or 4th tall that is. His last 2 years have been very disappointing. I know he was injured all of last year but that itself is a worry.

Oh, and my real answer would be:
YAHOO we are in a grand final AND we have a specialist ruckman! Hallelujah brother praise the lord!

Power wants second Carr

By MICHELANGELO RUCCI
29 September 2004

PREMIERSHIP midfielder Josh Carr will stay at Port Adelaide rather than join Fremantle. And, in a remarkable twist, Carr could still fulfil his wish to play alongside his older brother, the Dockers-based Matthew.

Port last night was preparing to reward Carr for his loyalty at Alberton by asking if 25-year-old Matthew was interested in a move to the Power.

Carr, 24, has been balancing staying at Port or reuniting with his family in Perth and joining Matthew at Fremantle where he has played since 2001 after leaving St Kilda.

Given Port's successful combinations of brothers - Kane and Chad Cornes and Peter and Shaun Burgoyne, all premiership players - bringing together the Carrs is appealing to the Power.

While Josh Carr is now ready to sign a new deal at Alberton, the new focus in the Power's mission to keep together its premiership-winning squad is rookie forward Damon White. The 21-year-old West Australian, who played five games this year after being on the Power list for four seasons, is being chased by West Coast and interest is known to be held by several other clubs. An emergency in Port's grand final side, White today is expected to ask for a trade arguing he has better prospects of becoming a regular player at another club.

Carr's future at Alberton was sealed on Monday afternoon when he told his team-mates he wanted to stay with them. That declaration was made public in a radio interview in Melbourne by Power captain Matthew Primus.

Now Power wants second Carr

From Page 104

Yesterday, as Carr and his team-mates were given the key to the city by Lord Mayor Michael Harbison, Carr was refusing to confirm such before he had spoken to his Perth-based parents.

"I really have nothing to say until next week," said Carr. "I have to speak to my family first."

In reality, all that remains to be decided between Port, Carr and his Melbourne-based manager Paul Connors is the finer details of the contract which has been on Connors' desk for eight weeks.

No detail seems more critical than the term Carr seeks - ranging from one to three years.

"We're ready to sign Josh up now," Port chief executive Brian Cunningham said. "But we understand he wants to talk to his family first.

"We're pleased to hear that he has indicated to his team-mates his interest to stay with this very special group. They have formed a special bond as the club's first AFL premiership side - and we appreciate Josh being loyal to them.

"But we also understand he needs to speak to his family."

Carr's impending commitment to Port puts to an end a three-club deal that has been brewing outside Alberton for weeks.

Fremantle forward Jeff Farmer would have returned to the Demons. Melbourne midfielder Scott Thompson, an SANFL recruit from the Port Adelaide Magpies, would have been served up to the Power regardless of Adelaide's moves to sign the 21-year-old.

Cunningham yesterday dismissed Melbourne reports premiership coach Mark Williams was to become the AFL's highest-paid coach with a $500,000 bonus for winning the club's first flag.

"Mark is paid bonuses for winning finals, but he will not be getting a $500,000 bonus for winning the grand final," said Cunningham.

Cunningham said the premiership bonus for Williams was an extra season on his two-year contract signed in late June with a pay cut. Williams is now on contract to the Power until the end of the 2007 season.

Williams negotiated to take a pay cut on the condition he get an extra season if he delivered a premiership any time between 2004 and 2006.

The pay cut, which is said to be up to 17.5 per cent, was accepted by Williams to free up more money in Port's football budget so he could keep his coaching staff which this year had four full-time assistant coaches.

Ironically, Williams' move to keep his team together has been hit by raids from rival clubs. Hawthorn already has claimed assistant coach Alastair Clarkson and Adelaide is chasing recruiting manager Alan Stewart.

Port is adamant it wants Stewart and yesterday averted fitness coach Andrew Russell moving to Hawthorn.

5 days later Carr was a Docker.

To be honest, I would be very willing to trade Josh. But not to adelaide, I dont think they are offering anything we want. We dont need watts.

I dont rate josh as a ruck, and i dont see him improving too greatly in that area, and I dont think he is anything special in the forward line. The only quality he has is his height.

I personally think we are in real danger in the ruck next year.
