Clarke told to make a decision
By MICHELANGELO RUCCI

VETERAN Adelaide ruckman Matthew Clarke has until the end of the week to decide if he will play on next year.
As 32-year-old Clarke remains uncommitted to the Crows, the deadline has been imposed to ensure Adelaide enters the AFL trade period on Monday aware if it will need to deal for a ready-made ruckman.
This may be more relevant amid surprising speculation that Collingwood is prepared to trade former No. 1 draft pick, 23-year-old ruckman Josh Fraser.
If Clarke signs a new one-year contract, Adelaide will have no need to barter for an experienced ruckman to support Rhett Biglands, cover the absence of injured lead ruckman Ben Hudson and bridge the transition time between draftees Ivan Maric and John Meesen becoming AFL ruckmen.
But if Clarke retires, Adelaide's planning for trade week will change. Fraser, the No. 1 draftee in 1999, would attract interest at West Lakes. In return, Collingwood may find value in Adelaide teenage forward Fergus Watts, a first-round draft pick who has asked to be traded to a Victorian-based club so he can return home to Melbourne.
All 16 AFL clubs can trade players and draft picks from next Monday until 1.30pm (SA time) next Friday.
So far, Adelaide has Watts on its trade list. Port Adelaide has young defender Stephen Gilham wanting to be on the Power's list.
Adelaide's list management was further shaped yesterday by defender James Begley retiring after 36 games with St Kilda and 25 with the Crows after joining the SA club in 2003. Adelaide says Begley, after meeting coach Neil Craig, agreed injuries had reduced his capacity.
Clarke played just six AFL games this season - the last five, including three finals, after Hudson needed to have his right knee reconstructed after Showdown XVIII.
His form, particularly in the finals against Port Adelaide and West Coast, justified the Crows' prudence in talking Clarke out of retirement this time last year.
And his stellar performances suggested Clarke would find new enthusiasm to continue into his 14th consecutive AFL season.
But so far Clarke has not given any such hint, not even at the Adelaide grand final breakfast at the weekend where he became aware of the Crows fans' eagerness to know of his intentions.
His answer suggested he was still uncertain.
Adelaide football manager John Reid yesterday declared the club was confident Clarke would be at West Lakes next season.
"It is not resolved fully, but everything in moving in the right direction," said Reid.
Despite Watts, Begley and midfielder-forward Chris Ladhams quitting, Adelaide will not delist any player before the trade period ends next Friday
