Running The Tan

I've done it once, last year...just over 13 minutes, but this was when my marathon training load was at its heaviest. Doing it again in six weeks, hoping for about 12:25-12:35. Don't use this as a point of comparison though. I think Craig Mottram's record is 10 minutes with a little bit of change.

If jogging's your thing, 18 minutes is OK - about 5 min/k pace is alright. If you want to improve, just jog further than that (3.83kms) and if you're going to the Tan, do some hill repeats (big effort up, jog/cruise down)up Anderson St. It'll bust your chops, your time will fall soon enough.

Keep training:)

Great spot for Swervyn Mervyn!!! ;)

Reasonably serious local footballers should be able to run it in about 14min.

The record IIRC is about 10:47.In the 80's Steve Ovett did 2 laps in 22 mins!
In his playing days Kevin Sheedy did it in around 12 mins!!!

Might have to try it one day. Unfortunately, I'm more of the stamina, not speed type. So I could easily do a few laps, it would just take me a while. :p

best of 16:10 during 2010, was also in the middle of training for the Melbourne Marathon. Just over 4 min /kms for the 3.87. Most start at the Pillars of Wisdom and head clockwise. I'm determined to knock of 16 mins during this year.

You will see a variety of runners on The Tan, from the serious to the walkers.

Best view is often found by running anti clockwise ;)

For those who are mystified, "the tan" is a wanky term for the Royal Botanical Gardens.

It's actually the Royal Botanic Gardens - but carry on!

I've never jogged in my life, always been big, but I've gone on a health kick in an effort to lose 40-45kgs.

To keep me on target, I've set myself the goal of running the Tan when I'm in Melb for Round 7 next year.

But this quote scares me:

Is it really hilly or just a bit up and down?

haven't seen the whole course but at least one side of it is a pretty steep uphill.

went for a run the other day. 5k's 27mins. not good. i was doing 5k (on a track admittedly) in about 21 mins when i finished school in 2002 and would've kept a time pretty close to that up until about 2006 when i left for overseas... definately need to get the fitness back.

I've only ran it in fun runs, where you tend to only run parts of it.

The hill up anderson st is reasonably steep. I went and walked the course before running it and I'm glad I did as it would have been a heartbreaker going up it x2 had I not been expecting it. When I ran it, it wasn't that bad.

You have to look at the brightside that a few hundred metres uphill then translates to the rest of the course ~3km of flat/downhill :)

is anderson st the hill where if you walk down it, you'll cross a bridge over the freeway and end up at gosch's paddock??

EDIT: yes it is.

Best time is 16.06, thankfully it's my most recent. Am aiming to get it under 15.30 by the end of the summer.

The Hill isn't that bad, as long as you manage the run properly. Don't waste yourself trying to steam up it. If anything the first 800m or so are the hardest, IMO, as your body adjusts to the idea that it's not going for a 100m sprint, but a fair sized run.

Well err actually its not - its the tan coloured running track that goes around a part of Melbournes inner city parkland which includes Kings Domain, Government House and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Its actual title is tan track - so if calling it the tan is wanky then so is calling the MCG The G or anything else that is shortened.

I see, now. I was told by an individual it was short for "botanic".

Thanks for the explanation. Nevertheless, it is preferable to have it made clear from the onset.

Well round 7 has now been and gone and I did run the Tan as planned with a time of 25:21.

In Sept 2010 I was 130kg. In Jan when I wrote the above I'd got down to 105kg. May 2011 and I'm now down to around 87/88kg.

Anyway, I'm back in Melb for R13 and hoping to chop a few minutes off my time.

Nodgey, that is just an awesome effort - well done!!

You must be feeling absolutely terrific at the moment!

That's incredible. I've gone from 87kgs to 74kgs over the same period and I couldn't believe what a massive difference just a few kilos made to my life. Losing that kind of weight must have you on top of the world.

Jeez at my heaviest I was 120kg. I'm 86kg now but it has taken me a few years to reach that - not months! Good effort.

Cheers guys, it does make a huge difference to your life. Everything in my wardrobe, except socks, is too big for me. And not just loose but stupidly tent-like big. Shopping is now fun again.

Still got another 12-15 to go and I now know that is IS achievable. Hoping to crack 22/21 minutes next run.

that's a fair amount of weight you've lost

how tall are you?

I've run it in 16:40, was aiming for 15 minutes but after running it twice a week for a month realized that was never going to happen so gave up :P
