I have to admit I had not been a big fan of Rutten since he was seemingly "exposed" with the loss of Bassett, Torney and Massie but I must say, he's really proved me wrong in recent weeks with really strong performances. I've always been a Bock fan though so I will join with you in appreciating our stalwarts in defence!

I don't reckon they get enough credit for how well they combine together, and how dominant they generally are.

Most teams are lucky to have one defender of the calibre of Bocky or Truck, but we've got two - and not only are they both very good defenders, they're also fantastic offensively, and extremely good users of the ball.

Definitely one of the real strengths of our club.

Opposition key forwards rarely kick bags of goals against us. We have probably forgotten what it's like for a game to be ripped away from us on the back of a solo domination up forward. We couldn't beat the Brisbane Lions until Alastair Lynch retired. Now it is rare for the guns to kick even 4 goals in a game against us.

Scott Lucas kicked 7 against us in Round 1 a couple of seasons ago but that was against Scott Stevens. And Buddy kicked 7 against us in the 2007 EF but that was against Massie. Pavlich did kick a bag one year though against Bock IIRC but you have to seach long and hard to find anything much.

Rooey if probably the best in the game ATM (sorry Garry), we're lucky we have someone who has form against him.

The lack of appreciation Rutten gets from some of our fans is flat out embarrassing. If he has two or three goals kicked on him the knives come out. It is ridiculous. His record against all of the big guns around the league is superb. He gets the job done week in week out. If he has a bad game he may have conceded two or three. Once every two years he might concede four goals. If he was playing against us Walker or Tippett would struggle to get one kick on him.

Rutten is awesome at what he does.

Let me join the Rutten appreciation thread. He is a Gun with that capital G.
Rutten is the glue that holds our backline together. We look much poorer without him.
Earlier in the year we had people on this board calling for Rutten to be traded to GC for a couple of 1st round picks. The theory given was that Truck was slow and the game had passed him by.
Yeah, trade an AA fullback who is coming into his prime and will have maybe 7 or 8 more years at the top for a couple of untried 17 YO kids. again.

I too, think that Rutten and Bock are guns. You'd think at least one of them would be named in the All Australian team. Both have been playing some real great footy in recent weeks and gel really well in defence together. Guns indeed.

No doubt its a great starting block for a team. They are the core of our defence and a great combination. Both are AA and still reasonably young.

I have always claimed that its important to have a strong spine and when I look at Bock and Rutten, they are the rocks of our spine. Add the likes of Tippett up front and we are quickly building a very impressive spine.

Rutten in particular has been very underrated lately. Even some of our own supports fail to appreciate just what he brings to the table and how important he is to us. They are arguably the best key defensive duo in the game.
