Don't know much about him. Noticed the excellent soundtrack on an 80's movie called Southern Comfort recently...was performed by Cooder.

Excellent movie too. Anyone who hasn't seen it - worth the download.

He does a lot of soundtrack work. Paris, Texas comes to mind.

Often uses a G tuning. Gives it that real blues sound.

I love what I have heard of Ry Cooder, unfortunately I don't own many of his records.

albums I do own of his are Paris, Texas & Buena Vista Social Club soundtrack, another album he did with Ali F*rka Toure (stupid filter always censors Toure's name !) and a best of Ry Cooder - I think I have owned two separare best of Ry Cooder albums over the years.

Such a tasteful guitarist, he could quite easily be a lot flashier/showier, but he is a servant to the song and often takes a back seat while letting other musos in the arrangements shine ..

In answer to the OP, Paris, Texas is where I first heard of him so I would probably stick with that album ...

but would like to hear more recommendations myself ..

All really good recordings.

My advice would be to check out his early work with Captain Beefheart. The album Safe As Milk is awesome.

Crossroads soundtrack is the one I've got. Love it.

Heard this version many times, but only realised today it's a Ry Cooder cover.

Best cover of an Elvis song. Ever.
