I played junior football with Cooky and he was an absolute gun. He only played midfield back then and when he made it to stingrays became a wing/HFF. Some of his best attributes were evident in under 12's, that being great skills and footy smarts. He just knew where to get the pill.

Some people have concerns about his height/build but he was listed at the draft as 186cm and that might even stretch into 188cm. He's bigger than your Didak's and your O'Keefe's and his overhead marking ability means he plays taller. I would in no way suggest he is KPP material but is more of a medium forward that can pose more risks to an opposition's defence.

Can't wait to see him debut for Collingwood and hopefully add some bulk to his frame.

Playing styles aside, this kid is the next Dane Swan. Imagine he will acquit himself well to AFL football, be a solid contributor without starring but then really come of age in his 4th/5th year or so. Very happy with this selection by Hiney mamma.

Edit: Just saw Figgy compare him to Swan....great minds think alike!

Its great to see everyone is on the Cooky bandwagon.

I remember when he was first taken and eveyone criticised the pick because he was unknown and according to footyfraft wasn't expected to be taken till the 50's and 60's.

I feel he will be a good player that will be a very good forward/midfield contributor. I saw him yesterday (saturday), he said he was enjoying his footy. He's living with Pendles, Stanley and Anthony and is driving around in Jarryd Roughheads old car. Unfortunately he's in Willi's 2 tomorrow but he is coming back from injury so it shouldn't be too long till he's back into the seniors.

Cook wont stay a medium forward though he will become part of the midfield who drifts forward.

I hear a rumour that Collingwood have had an eye on Cook since under 16's (when he was playing midfield). If true it was an abvious attempt to boost midfield stocks.

It was apparently his GF performance in the TAC cup losing side that sealed the deal , he was best in his team 27 disp and a couple of goals + bottom aged so plenty of upside with young cooky.

By all reports, Stanley is an iffy kick. If that's actually the case -- I repeat if -- then I'd be very disappointed that we drafted him. We already have too many dodgy kicks. With each passing year, foot skills become more important. You just can't afford to draft kids with deficiencies in this area any more, especially not with an early second-round pick.
As jabso said, he's as erratic as you can imagine. He can put in some zingers, then 2 minutes later he's putting kicks in which make McGough look silky!

On the plus side, he'll end up built like Millane, and he loves the tough stuff like Pants. He can find it, but as Coin said, he has a propensity to try to do too much and gets pinned too often.

He's still my #1 concern from the 5 taken in the National Draft, but you won't win them all. Hopefully Richardson can get his kicking on-line.

Hopefully, Richardson can work some magic with Stanley's kicking. After all, Johnno's kicking has improved significantly, so it can be done. That said, generally speaking taking a kid who's a poor kick and backing yourself to improve his footskills is usually a losing proposition. For every kid who improves significantly, I reckon there are about 10 who don't. And I don't think I've ever seen a genuinely poor kick turn into a genuinely good kick. I'd like to see Collingwood adopt the policy of some other clubs, namely, don't take anyone who's not a sound kick. Maybe you can compromise a little with picks in, say, the rookie draft, because the talent pool is so much shallower and most players are gonna be NQRs in one way or another -- but in the second round of the national draft? No way.

Damn, I got very excited when I saw that he kicked 6, and then I double check and see he didn't.
