Still annoys me how this bloke was treated

Anyone else feel that this bloke should have played a lot more games then he did

MM always seemed to try and turn him into something he was not he was the perfect HB and if he got drafted now instead of 10 years ago most teams would love him coming of HB

Think of the HB's we have had in recent years

Still remember him running out of the back pocket in that Prelim final against Adelaide taking about 4 bounces and kicking a 40 metre bullet down Rocca's throat

What did everybody think of Lonie?

He was scared of his own shadow, he was one of the players who was bullied by the then more physical sides.

Remember the Brisbane side jokingly voting him as the bravest / scariest player. :)

He had a fantastic kick.

His kicking skills were excellent. I rated him highly. He wasn't scared. It was just the way he played. He was an outside player.
Definately treated harshly by some people. His kicking out would be useful right now!!

Came across as another one of those players who Mick just ended up 'not liking' for whatever reason and squeezed them out of the side...

- Lonie
- S Rocca
- McGough
- Marty Clarke
- Scotland
- Jason Cloke

Yet he persisted with duds like:

- Egan
- Cole
- McCarthy
- McKee
- Richards

Loved Lonie early in his career. Remember in his 1st game Ben Dixon tried to rough him up in the goal square at the start of the game and Lonie just went on his way and thrashed him as an 18 yo. I thought he would be a 200game player that day and remeber saying to my son this guy will never get dropped, he just fitted in so well. I remember his dad died in maybe his second season and I reckon after a while he lost confidence. He wasn't a hard player but I didn't think he was anywhere near as soft as madeout. The Brisbane boys highlighting it sealed his reputation.

Not like you to hijack a thread to dish on Mick.

Lonie was hardly sqeezed out, 8 seasons and 123 games under MM. Ostetis pubis cruelled him at the end. He played 21 games in his 1st season, had a streak of 59 consequetive games. Hardly the stuff of someone squeezed out by the coach.

I always thought he was harshly treated too. With the way the game is played now, disposal have never been more vital. Further, we have much better midfield depth than when he was playing.
He would be an highly valuable player now and most certainly have a role in a 2012 Collingwood 22.
Regarding the reputation, i would much rather judge what i saw of Ryan than the Brisbane view. An outside player sure, but all good sides can use one or two, particularly with the skill he had.
Brisbane also thought Wakelin was 'vulnerable'.
Still played 120 odd games, did struggle with some groin troubles, given a few different circumstances he could have played 200 games.
FWIW, and it still means something, he was a super bloke too!!

I know we all try to be fair in our assessments of our 'own' i just dont like to read derogatory stuff about our blokes that have solid careers as an AFL footballer. Soft is a derogatory description of a footballer, i think it's overly harsh. He certainly wasnt Scott Burns sure, but he played an important role in our side for quite a few seasons.

Point taken. Perhaps a bit harsh on my behalf.

people love saying C'wood players were shit from era. If the siren went5 minutes earlier it would have been a premiership team with lonie, steinfort, freeborn, lokan coming in next season, j.cloke playing a prominent role until he was suspended, a.rocca, molloy, woewoddin, betheras

short memories must have a .... shoooooooooort memories

Lonie was a very very good player

Pretty sure he was playing reserves in those last couple of years or so, and he wasn't old either.

Being squeezed out doesn't mean you NEVER play football either.

Rocca, Jason Cloke, Scotland were all playing regular footy before they fell out of favour with Mick for one reason or another.

All I remember is a game against the doggies at telstra dome when he received the ball off half back, took 85 bounces and kicked a great goal from 50. I still get shivers when I heard the roar when it happened.

Was softer than burnsey but had more heart than a lot of the players who currently play

Just watched the long run Prelim final against Adelaide where Rocca kicks that huge goal now that is a moment i will never forget

How do you upload video's

I don't think he was harshly treated by Mick. I liked him but I liked him a lot more after I got to speak with him several times. I spoke with him a few times in the inner sanctum room at the G, but I spoke with him at length in 2006 as he was on my table at the player's breakfast. Had a really good chat and got to learn a bit about him. I said to him how he seemed to be really enjoying his footy this year (2006) and one of the things he said was that as a junior he played in teams that almost never lost. So when that happened at Collingwood (2005 anyone?) that was a totally new experience for him. I don't remember his exact words now, but I remember really appreciating what he had to say and gained a lot more respect for him.

As far as the soft rep, that's crap. The Brisbane bullies loved putting out shit that like and (unfortunately) it usually stuck. Sure, he was no Jarrod Molloy (who was?) but the soft rep was way overdone.

A beautiful kick of the ball.
Today he would be called "an outside player"
He lost his Father which really affected his form then he got some very serious injuries and could never get back.

I think he is back playing with his Brother for their junior club
