(the more eagle eyed of you will have noticedI've posted this before, but hey - its a free country isnt it)

---------------------------------------

The SA Government has been carrying out a major PR offensive here in England. Press (and to some extent TV) are full of articles saying the SA is crying out for immigrants, as the SA population is decreasing at rapid rate.

State Premier has been all over the media, as have several local business leaders.

Apparently things are reaching a point where the economy of the state could be seriously affected in the 10 years.

Example: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3857207.stm

SA Government is even offering a regional opportunity visa to potential candidates. (What this effectively means is the “points” system is reduced if you decide to move to SA.)

Given that (generally speaking) migration to Australia is more difficult than in the past, I was somewhat surprised.

How are planning to house everyone though? Build Elizabeth Mk 2? Also thought SA was the driest state – how will everyone drink?

As a “potential” migrant to SA (once I clear my f***** debt/declare bankrupty/£10 Pom system brought back) I am interested in the views of South Aussies.

Youve heard of beer? Make mine a coldie..

Oh and ''regional'' means country ..ever heard of Mt Gambier? Whyalla? Renmark?

Mt Gambier is where we send Vic lovers as its only 8kms from the border..Whyalla has a large English population and Renmark has a river next to it if you dont drink beer..and if you dont drink beer move to Mt Gambier and head into Victoria

The S.A Government has been rooted for years since the mid eighties when the Bannon Government ********ed Bank SA, and never looked after the 'rural' cities such as Whyalla, Pt Pirie,Pt Augusta etc, they are all on industry cities and are expected to survive for ever as such, the whole state is in a very servere economic downturn and it is even now starting to effect Adelaide with Mitsubishi, closing it's Lonsdale Engine Manufacturing facility, and Pt Stanvac Oil Refinery also closing, a loss of a lot of jobs and no other jobs for them to go to they move interstate. Why do I live in Vic????Work, the only reason, I couldnt get a fulltime job in my trade (Baker/Pastrycook) in Adelaide. I have been now lucky enough to gain a very good fulltime position in Hobart in my trade and am relocating there in about 3 weeks. SA government needs more than enticing the poms to come to SA for a better lifestyle to lift SA out of the economic doldrums.

SA is doing okay, but there tends to be a drain to the eastern states, particularly with younger people. The Bank SA debacle was a big issue in the 80s (I don't want to get political, we can agree to disagree, but my personal opinion is that I don't think it was the government's fault that a board set up to independently run the bank, with supposedly reputable board members, managed to lose all that money - it was all part of the culture of mismanagement and greed that permeated commerce in western economies in the 80s - although the government was supposed to be hands-off, they do generally cop the wrath of voters in the end, unless they're very skillful at blaming other people).

Regional may or may not mean away from Adelaide. You'd need to check exactly - from a national perspective they now consider SA regional because it isn't Mebourne, Sydney or Canberra.

I know a pommy couple from London that have recently migrated here under one of these business migration deals and say they love it here - much better way of life, away from the pollution, traffic and never seeing the sun in winter (not just the weather but the very short days). They also spent some time in Sydney but preferred Adelaide (or at least chose to settle here for now).

And no, our population isn't decreasing rapidly - not even at all. But the growth has slowed to the point that, with an aging population (like much of western Europe), without more immigration, the population will start to slowly shrink in a few decades. Tasmania is in a much "worse" position, and will no doubt be trying similar methods to attract migrants.

it can in order to have all the bad debt paid by 2006. Combine the restoration of our AAA credit rating with the social manipulation agenda (in conjunction with the Advertiser), and you can be assured that Rann will be running this state for as long as he wants.

So I assume you are happy that the debts will have been paid, but unhappy with the government's agenda. But you're not claiming the Advertiser as pro-Labor are you!?
