just wanted your opinions on saddo...i like the guy as a player, but i was thinking

was it worth trading for him, or rather keeping our pick and getting a young defender (lucy was still around at that pick)?

dont get me wrong i hope saddo can play really well for us for the rest of his career (5 more years if he has fully recovered from his knee). but it crossed my mind that maybe we would be better off developing a young defender and mould our backline together to perform for many years.

Last years draft was described was lacking depth and obviously Wayne Hughes thought so too. We took Bower and Edwards who are both potentially young defenders, so no real need for another, especially with Hartlett taken the year before.

I suggest that a midfielder would have been the option, but they obviously didn't believe there would be one worth taking that late in the draft, so decided Saddington was worth the risk.

I'm more than comfortable with the trade, especially we you consider we need all the experience and leadership we can get at present to help the young blokes along.

Saddington should be able to fill the void until the likes of Hartlett, Bower, Edwards and Flint and are ready to assume a key defensive post.

Hi Jeremias.

For 2 main reasons the club decided to not use pick 52 in the draft. So we basically took Saddington for a delisted player rather than take him over a player in the draft.
So you are comparing taking Saddington over Norman, Clarke etc.

The 2 reasons for this was the weakness in the draft and our financial position. Delisting another player for picks would have cost us the pay out plus a drafted kid who would be on a compulsory 2 year deal.
You can delist a player after 1 of those years but there salary still counts for the whole 2 years in the cap. Also sends a very poor message to any kid we draft if we starting doing that (unless they do somrthing very bad off field).

Saddington is having half his salary paid by Sydney while he is at Carlton. He wanted to return home to Victoria and has shown he can play. He is a good bloke and a good influence on our young list and comes cheap. Lets the kids develop and hopefully he can fill a role for a few years and maybe more depending on how his knee holds up.

We took Bower, Edwards and Flint who are all young defenders.

190 and 84kgs
193 and 87kgs
192 and 84kgs

are those 3 blokes measurements. None of them is physically ready and might sneak a game or two at the end of the year (rookie promotion maybe for Flint) but in reality its next year for those 3. So in the mean time Saddington can play aas a pinch hit KPP defender or third tall and we can see if Livo is worth another contract at the end of the year.
Hopefully Hartlett can also push for senior selection now he can resume after a hammy.

So thats 4 tall defenders developing. No need for Lucy or anymore as that would be a problem fitting them all in.

The main aim was to put us in a position to go deep into this draft upcoming and have our list be easily managed.

Kouta, Houla and Thornton all finish there deals this year. We can offer them what we want at the end of the year.

Chambers, Longmuir, Livo, Bannister, Wiggins, Davies,McGrath and Sporn all finish there deals this year as well. Plenty of scope to make decisions on who is kept and not.

Plus Smith, Batson will have to be promoted or cut at seasons end. Aisake gets another year as an international rookie if the club wants.

So we could make 8 to 10 changes at years end. Promote 2 or 3 rookies who are AFL ready physically to fill the void a little and take 5 or 6 kids in the draft and use round 1 to 5 (at least) in a better and deeper draft.

So Saddington, McLaren are stop gap measures to keep us competitive while the kids develop. The rookie rucks in Aisake and Batson and the young defenders not AFL ready. That does not mean they will all make it but Saddington is not taking there spot and neither is McLaren.

Saddington might take Livos spot. Mclaren is taking Bryans spot. Bower, Batson etc are not ready and therefore I am not unhappy about those 2 senior blokes playing instead.

If we rate 60 or 70 players this year in the draft then we make way for 5 or 6 picks. The problem was last year that number was about half and thats why we did not make more room on the list. That coupled with financial reasons meant it was the better "strategic" decision long term to do.

The problem was that for a number of years excemptions have been granted for kids who miss the cut off for the draft. They apply and are granted access to be picked. Last year that stopped completely and therefore the odd player or 2 who would normally be in the pool was not. Joel Selwood and a couple of others (Eric Mackenzie etc).

Deledio was an example of a player who made the minimum age by a few days in 2004. Imagine him just missing out and being eligible in 2005 and then add Selwood in and you can see a few days either way and things suddenly can change a lot. When a lot of bottom aged kids are taken in 1 year that generally means the following years draft is a bit weaker.
