Ferryden Park players I remember:
Peter Munn, Noel Pettingill, Rodney Seekamp, Alex Drzal, Andrew Cornelissen, and what about the Stokes brothers? Ray, Tim & John.
Coaches: John McInnes, Peter Munn

Didnt realize the Stokes' played footy there  although they did play plenty of cricket there as well as at Woodville.

The Stokes brothers. Have we got enough disk space to eulogise about them?

Tim definitely was the best. Good A Grade District fast bowler and a sensational slogger when the occasion arose. If I recall correctly, we needed 10 an over for 9 or so overs in a B Grade match to win outright once, and Tim came up with the goods. Ian (legendary bloke) was an opening bat who played a little A Grade but was mostly a solid B Grade player. Larger than life characters. They played at Woodville when GrahamH and I were scorers there.

The Stokes brother not mentioned here is Hylton (a man mountain) who I believe died tragically young through disease.

Did Detto start there or Wingfield?
That's a very good question!

Ahh, I'm showing my age here but I if I recall correctly, the wrestling used to be on after the football show (Max Hall? as host), then the footy used to be on, live from local ovals such as Ingle Farm, Flinders Park, Edwardstown, Athelstone etc. There used to be a bloke called Ingham playing centre for Eddies (who I used to follow, being double blue - despite playing for Ingle Farm at the time) who was a great player.

Gary Window and Ian Aitken used to do the commentary and I used to look forward to Sunday footy, just as I did watching the reserves on a Saturday morning.

Those were the days.

Question, does anyone know if these were taped?

"There'll be 7 minutes of edited highlights on The Football Show, 12 noon Sunday".

I always found Max Hall a slimey sort of character. Of course, there was also Eldon Crouch. I believe that is the great John McInnes depicted on the left.

Blair Schwartz hosted the 9 Footy Show too for a spell didn't he?

Ah the edited highlights packages. Wally May, Ron Kitchen, Elbows Aitken, Haydn Bunton when he wasn't coaching. Great memories.

Worl Championship Wrestling after the footy show ... was it still around when the SAFA came on? Jack Little spruiking The-barton Town Hall ... Mario Milano, Spiros Arion, Larry O'Dea, Killer Karl Cox, Bulldog Brown and Bulldog Brower ... ahh yes ...

No, Blair Schwartz was on World of Sport (remember the cycling on the rollers?) - along with Gordon Schwartz. Gordon would be just about the best sports journalist SA has produced, with the possible exception of Mike Coward. Gordon was great with local sport, while Coward is a wordsmith par excellence.

Sports journalism today is opinion, not facts. The sanctimonious Geoff Roach always made me want to puke when I lived in Adelaide - I'm sure he hasn't got any better.

In one of his rare league appearances for the Redlegs. I think the Bay player is a young(ish) Brian Colbey.

Cycling on rollers. How could you ever forget? And the 'tournament' snooker they used to play between teams. Paul Marrett was a sight at that!

Geoff Roach is worse. Trust me, don't torment yourself by checking. ;)

Adelaide Hawk - you are walking SA football history. Awesome.

Can you tell us about Peter Vertudaches?

Peter Vertudaches, nickname "Pepe".
Born October 29, 1941.
Guernsey No: 17
Recruited from Norwood Union in the Norwood-North Association.
Played seconds all season in 1963.
Played 62 games, kicked 13 goals for Norwood 1964-68.
In his first league season 1964 he played all 20 games and was selected on the Wing in the Advertiser Team of the Year.
Cleared to West Adelaide in 1970 were he played 2 games, 0 goals.

"Be careful what you wish for"....

One last question - Dennis Modra. Want to put him on my site. He would have been on the other wing to Vertudaches (who, might I suggest, was troubled with injury during his career)?

Some of those SAFA names are astounding. I didn't know Bill Ruth was at Edwardstown (and my brother worked with him!). I'm also not sure that Jeff Ebert is a big name! ;)

I just put Jeff Ebert in because of his surname I guess. Besides, he played state football for Queensland :)

To answer your question, both Modra and Vertudaches were plagued with injuries, and it meant neither one reached their potential as players, although Modra at least had a long career. Modra was a real speedster whose pace was diminished early due to knee problems.

I've wondered if the Vertudaches who currently plays for Sturt seconds may be related, perhaps you could answer that one.

Dennis Modra
Born 27th September 1941
Guernsey No: 18
Recruited from Port Augusta
Played 142 games kicked 33 goals for Norwood 1960 to 1970.
Selected on the Wing in the 1967 Advertiser Team of the Year.

I've already selected my Norwood team from the 1960s, and both Modra and Vertudaches were my wingmen. Others to play wing in that period were Brian Bowe, Barry Smith and state cricketer John Nash. Mike Poulter actually played on the Wing in his debut year of 1968. You want to talk underrated players, Poulter would be a good topic.

Just as a sideline, Dennis Modra is the answer to one of my Norwood trivia questions that most Norwood fans of the time cannot answer. The question is, "Name the only person to play at least 1 league game for Norwood in every season from 1960 to 1969". Most people say Oatey, but he didn't start until 1961, and Bill Wedding retired at the end of 1968.

As you can see, I have a real trivial mind :)

Jeff played for Port Districts at one stage IIRC.

Does he have a son named Darren who played for the Gullies but now for Sturt. Darren is not a bad wingman who may push for a league spot this year.
