Hi guys, since the WC is starting in a few days, i thought we could discuss our thoughts on the upcoming matches here. If anything, this WC will be a welcome relief/distraction from our season of hell.

Aussies are in a tough group, if we can get a draw with France, I'd fancy us to get through. As usual with these major tournaments, I'll be rooting for England. Not just because i lived there for a few years, but I've always felt a strange connection between them and the saints. One and only wc win in 66, promise heaps and deliver little since then, superstar players and characters, mixed in with moments of sheer bad luck and heartache. Just like us. :innocent:

Here are the approx odds,

Outright winner
Brazil 9/2
Germany 19/4
Spain 6/1
France 13/2
Argentina 19/2
Belgium 12/1
England 18/1
Uruguay 25/1
Portugal 28/1
Croatia 33/1
Colombia 40/1
Russia 50/1
Poland 80/1
Denmark 100/1
Mexico 100/1
Switzerland 100/1
Sweden 150/1
Senegal 150/1
Egypt 150/1
Iceland 200/1
Serbia 200/1
Japan 200/1
Nigeria 200/1
Peru 200/1
Costa Rica 300/1
Australia 300/1
Iran 500/1
Morocco 500/1
South Korea 500/1
Tunisia 500/1
Panama 1000/1
Saudi Arabia 1000/1

Thoughts?

Don't follow soccer aside from watching the Socceroos. Have watched every Socceroos match for a few years though.
Love me a good Wednesday at 3am match.

For people that say soccer is really boring, in general I agree. Although if you actually care about the result then it is really exciting.

France match should get a lot of viewers as well. 8pm Saturday is a great slot for us.
Will be on straight after the Saints.

As a Saints fan, the WC couldn't come at a better time.

I think we're a sneaky chance to get through our group, even if we can manage a small loss against France. A draw would be an amazing result and set us up well.

Excited to see how Arzani goes.

Germany are a very good side who seem well suited to world cup play.

That mixture of skill and a hard pragmatic approach to winning is hard to beat.

They couldn't give a rats arse about entertaining football it's all about winning.

Australia are just hoping to make it out of the group stage but must be long odds to be frank the quality just isn't there and they are embarrassed to use their physicality these days.

I hope England turn up for a change Brazil was very ordinary for them IMO.

Disappointed the US and Italy aren't there but there will be some late nights watching in my house.

I love the game so does my family, my daughters fiancé works at FFV and is a football fanatic.

I think France have the strongest side on paper, probably with Belgium. Germany not in the greatest form but should go deep.
We will struggle to get out of our group, it’s a tough one with France, Denmark & Peru all ranked inside the top 12 sides in the world.

I put 100 each on Belgium(12/1) and England(17/1). Bring on the WC!
Good shout!

I'm tipping France or Brazil to win it all.

Question marks on how Spain will go now that Lopetegui has been sacked.

As for Australia I think we need some points against Peru & Denmark, preferably win and draw. France on Saturday night should be entertaining, would be amazed if we get a result there.

England and Greece are my other two sides so with the Greeks out I'm hoping England can advance. I think they SHOULD make it past the groups but we all saw what happened in the Euro's...I would say a quarter final for England would be a successful tournament.

Decent combover for the ref Nestor Pitana here for the World Cup opener. Takes a brave man to try and fool a couple of billion people watching the game, kudos to him :D

I've got $20 on the Spain winners/Lukaku top scorer double @ $101 as they're my predictions, wasn't thrilled when the Spaniards fired their coach just a few hours after I placed that bet!

Key for the Socceroos is to not get belted by France on Saturday night, if we do then it kills our goal difference and makes it almost impossible for us to qualify, like it did in 2010 when Germany belted us 4-0 in the 1st game. If offered a 2-0 loss I would take it and run, and then attempt to get a win and a draw in the other 2 games. Don't think we'll make it though.

Would love to see Cahill score and become just the 4th player in history (one of which is Pele) to score in 4 separate World Cup's!

Good luck to the Socceroos. It's a hard group you have.

For England, if we reach the quarter-final, that would be a good tournament. We have what should be a comfortable first game against Tunisia next Monday, though we'll probably make hard work of it. I'm not big on the national team, to be honest. It's difficult to pick an overall winner; it looks wide open.

Whenever I hear the Russian national anthem it reminds me of a boxing match in the 80s, where a veteran Rocky Balboa brings communism down a rung or two by knocking out much fancied Russian Ivan Drago in the last round.

On Christmas Day in Russia no less.

It's great isn't it...off to the Disco I go...

Think it's all set up very well for Brazil to swoop in and win it all. Neymar is in some incredible form and will be very hard to stop, the smart money would have been on him for top goalscorer at 12's. Spain or Germany the runners up for me.

Love Belgium and France's squads, but don't think either have what it takes, they both have their flaws. Realistically speaking, France should win comfortably tomorrow night. I'm tipping 2-0 or 3-1. Would love to see either Maclaren or Nabbout to get a start up front

South Korea huge value at $4.50 to get out of their group if anyone's having a play, I think that they will progress.
