I know there are some very cluey people on this board...so here's my question...

Do the wages of rookie listed players need to be included within each club's salary cap or are they paid outside the salary cap??

Or, does a rookie's wage only need to be included under the salary cap when he is elevated to the main list??

I think rookie-listed players earn a base wage of about $25,000 per year + $2,000-odd per game they play. That means Hazell/Dabrowski/Andrews/Parker/Smith cost the AFC about $125,000 in wages this year. Which begs another question, were they worth it?

Yours curiously...

No.
Yep.
Some years they are, some years they are not.

No it doesn't count as part of the salary cap

Yes, once the rookie is upgraded his salary is counting as part of the salary cap.

Base wage of $18K and if they get promoted they receive the match payments of about $2000 for every AFL game they play. Whether or not its worth it is dbatable BUT you take a punt on them and you can still get some good players of the list. You have to understand that only one of theose rookies is local so I think its fair that we pay them that much considering there are moving to another state just for a slim chance of getting the gig in the AFL.

That's peanuts for a club like ours.

If even one of those five turns out to be a handy player, then its more than worth it.

Agreed, now that it has been confirmed for me that the rookie wages are not included in the salary cap.

I know we are a while away from trading/drafting - but just tyring o recall when we announced that those draftees - Bock, Rutten, Mattner - were elevatd to the list. I thought it was well before the draft/trade week.

And is there anyone from this year seriously likely to challenge for a spot on the list? I would say they might keep one or two for a second year - especially Andrews.

Exactly Dave - another form of recruiting to the main list. I use to get mad when we wouldn't use our maximum rookie selections as we missed out on the opportunity of recruiting a potential player to our main list.
