Massive difference between the two.

Like what exactly? Is the fact they are both made up of sodium and are bad for you some of these differences? Diamonds and coal are both made up of Carbon substrates, just because they look different doesn't mean they aren't the same. MSG is MADE of sodium just like salt is made of sodium and potassium and sometimes chlorine, here's a thought: Why don't we drink pool water? derp.

How about you argue against the point where sodium is necessary for function?

Your analogy with carbon is idiotic, if it is that simple, why can we not easily transform between allotropes? Quick, gather up all the charcoal and we can make oodles of graphene and nanotubes.

Do you really believe MSG = table salt = BAD SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?

Surely a troll?

MSG is not "made" of sodium.

It is a ionic compound formed from sodium and glutamate.

Diamond is an allotrope of carbon formed via covalent bonding into a crystalline lattice. Coal is a mixture, not a compound (diamonds and coal are not the same). Comparing the two ionic compounds to a covalent compound and a mixture is ridiculous.

Saying that sodium chloride and monosodium glutamate have the same effect on humans when ingested because they both contain a sodium cation, is like saying sodium chloride and potassium chloride have the same effect because both contain a chloride anion. Again ridiculous.

It's a freaking toxin. They measure it when you have blood tests to make sure it isn't too high! How the hell do you need it to function?

woopedazz channeling Mantis ITT.

Either that or master trolling.

Oxygen is a toxin, and will kill us if present in to high quantities as well. I'd like to see you argue we don't need it to function.

Everyone has pretty much covered all your fails. Regarding MSG you do realise that it is naturally occurring in some foods, most commonly seaweed. Japanese food uses natural MSG in heaps of food and they are pretty healthy.

I sorry. Was trolling :(

Was pretty depressed after the Crows :(

No you weren't.

I always add salt when cooking, never at the table. Enhances the flavour of the food.

That sort of salt isnt the problem. The real problem is all the salt in pre-packaged, canned and fast foods.

Does note bode well for:
Salt & Vingear chips
Plain chips
Salt and Pepper squid
Salt and Pepper the band
Salty dogs (sailors)

Actually we usually measure it to make sure it isn't too low as that could cause irreversible brain damage.
But does that mean the more salt you eat the smarter you are?
Science is yet to answer this question.

Sodium is required for many functions in the body

MSG is found naturally in almost ever food and in fact we and most mammals have taste buds specifically for MSG.

Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure causing vascular damage and ultimately, erectile dysfunction.

I hereby pass the troll hat in this thread on to Grin. May you be as inept as I was :)

I'm very much a savoury person, love salt. Sweet things you get sick of easily.. a packet of Kettle Chilli Chips goes down easy (before they went extinct :( ).

Not having enough salt will cause an electrolyte imbalance, which is why if your water intake is too high compared to your sodium (and other electrolyte) intake , you feel horrible. Enter gatorade - almost 10% of your RDI for sodium in a bottle!

I did a year of B. Medical Science (including in/organic chemistry) and its amazing how everything about it is so much more interesting now that I'm not going to be assessed on it.

Don't see why you'd say I'm trolling tbh. MSG has been proven to be toxic and salt is very similar to MSG. Both salt (NaCl) and MSG (Monosodium glutamate or Sodium 2-Aminopentanedioate) are the same toxin when you get down to basics: "Monosodium glutamateis a sodium salt of glutamic acid, a naturally occurring non-essential amino acid. It is used as a food additive and is commonly marketed as a flavour enhancer.

So it's a food additive (I.e. not found naturally in food it has to be added to it) and it's very similar, if not the same, as NaCl and other sodium salts. MSG has been proven time and time again to be toxic to humans and people are probably seeing the similarities it has to salt and cutting back their daily intake of salt as well.

You clearly have zero understanding of what you're talking about.

salt is a toxin yes. But so is everything else, in fact there is nothing that exists which won't kill you if you have it too much of it. Salt is also required for the human body to function

Msg is naturally occurring and has no proven negative affects - deal with it
