Had a discussion with a group of Pies supporters about Maxwell pointing out his disposal and decision making is deplorable. This wasnt a new chain of thought for me as I dont rate him at all. Yes he is couragous but he continually turns the ball over and offers no drive from defence. They argued he is a better player than Sam Fisher. Who would you rather have in your team/

there really isn't anything nick maxwell does well at all

poor disposal

bad decision making

no defensive ability

he's a spud, sam fisher is an elite backman

No drive from defense? Do you even watch the Pies play?

Yet was selected in the All-Australian team of the year. Go figure.

Maxwell has got aweSome drive out of defence. He's not scared to go back with the flight of the ball. Does a lot of the team things with his 1%s. Got a great kick.

I don't which pies supportErs u were talking too. No he's possessions aren't as many as fishers but I think u should watch a few more pies games before making these wild aqusations

Of course. I forgot that only players with immaculate disposal can provide "drive" from defense. Run along child.

Well it certainly helps. Taking two steps with the ball then holding it across yourself and booting it might of had merit 30 years ago but not today. Maxwell is probably Travis Clokes worse nightmare. Imagine looking up to lead and you see the ball in his hands. Let me guess you also think kicking the ball off the ground is an outstanding attacking option.

Nah, it's probably got more to do with the fact that Maxwell had 50 running bounces last year (11th in the league), compared to Fisher's 17. Would you say Wojcinski provides good rebound? He had less than Maxwell. Gilbee? Less. Davey? Less. Hell, even Ablett had less. Unsurprisingly, Heath and Rhyce Shaw had the most by a long, long way... because they were probably the two best running rebounders last year.

That's not to say disposal isn't a factor in rebound, because it most certainly is. That's when someone like Hodge or Goddard will kill you off half-back. But run-and-carry is also extremely damaging rebound, hence why Heath Shaw gets tagged across half-back. And for what it's worth, Maxwell improved his disposal out of sight last year. Fisher does use the ball better still, but he is a decent kick these days, and a fantastic user by hand.

Please, continue to use absolutely nothing as your substance... it's doing you wonders.

So are you saying he is better than Fisher?

on what basis?

An opinion?

I saw every Collingwood game, and probably 15 Saints games plus finals. Based on what I saw, I felt that - while Fisher gets more of the ball - Maxwell was more influential for his side. He was incredible with his drive from defense, his courage and ability to read the play allowed him to be the most effective loose-man in the game [in my opinion, and yes I'm aware this isn't a "position", though with tactics the way they are... it should be].

Basically, I think - in 2009 - Maxwell provided better pressure at ground level [far more tackles], was a more effective loose-man [took far more contested marks and was brilliant as the third man up], provided better run from defense, and was generally damaging with his disposal [because he always moves the ball forward, rather than sideways - Fisher is the better user, but does go sideways a lot, that's the gameplan]. Fisher got more of the ball and was more precise by foot, and is also marginally better 1-on-1... but I don't think it was enough to make him superior in 2009.

Maxwell is a AA discrace. Terrible football player

No.

His selection was thoroughly deserved. Had an outstanding year. Stop living in the past.

The only, ahem, "discrace"... is your ability to comprehend football.

Heath and Rhyce Shaw have the most running bounces because they bounce the ball every couple of steps when they are in space.

Which indicates that they find space a lot. Draw from that what you will, but personally, I infer that these guys are great at running the ball off half-back. These guys essentially doubled their next closest rival for running bounces.

The reason he had so many bounces as once he has the ball the oppisition are more than happy for him to kick it. They zone off him and sit on the more dangerous ball users. Having Maxwell plod out of the backline then boot it is exactly what you want. Try again!
