Sam Gibson to retire at seasons end. After 130 games with North Melbourne and to date 5 games for the AFC

While not having as much of an impact as hoped. Appreciate the one season of service. Made the most of a late start to a career. Good luck Gibbo you're always welcome back to the nest.

It’s a pity our fitness staff managed to take a guy who played 130 games in a row and ruin his hamstrings to the point that he missed half the season.

Obviously he’s been told that he won’t be offered a contract for next year. It’s a shame as I thought he’d be a useful addition to our team.

Unfortunately due to the AFL's rule of atleast 6 list changes per year, He was always on edge for a new contract. An absolute professional preparer who was let down by our fitness mob (like so many others in our squad this year)

Quite a thing to upend your life and change states so late in the game to keep your career going, then to pull the pin early when you know it's ending

Thank you Gibbo and best of luck for the future :thumbsu:

Is it 6 now? Abolition of the rookie list, makes sense.

Even if he hadn't got injured it was a waste of time

We internally laude our drafting, development and leadership programs. So why was there any need for him?

Seems a great character though from his few interviews and a smart guy. I wonder if he'll stay in football?

“For me, I’m looking forward to the next chapter, either here in Adelaide or back in Melbourne.

“I was a graduate engineer before I was drafted and hope to get back into construction, which is something I really love"
From the AFC article

Same reason we play Mackay whenever possible.
  1. Elite runner. Clocks up those GPS numbers like no one else
  2. Experience. 130 games and over 30
  3. Elite at training. Sets the standards.
  4. "Run and carry"
  5. Ripping good bloke factor

I never thought Gibson would or should be a best 22 player for us, but it's very disappointing he didn't even get a chance to show his abilities thanks to our horrendous fitness and conditioning staff.

Best of luck Gibbo

He was midfield depth. We didn't know if CEY was gonna come on the way he did and certainly couldn't rely on Seedsman being healthy more often than not.

Even if you've got great drafting and development programs it doesn't hurt to have some experienced and reliable backup.

I don't think we recruited him as depth. I doubt Gibson would have moved states just to play SANFL in a side that should have been pushing for a flag.
If he wanted to play football he was gonna take any chance he got. Just look at Andy Otten last year, even if guys are stuck in the SANFL they'll still have an internal belief they can work their way in and sometimes luck falls their way. They wouldn't play otherwise. Kyle Cheney is the same this year.

Does he have any fitness qualifications. Heard him be honest about his injury issues and liked what I heard. Could be good to keep on staff.

He has also had good exposure to Kangatech. Which we use but maybe not property.

Otten and Cheney are different because both are on our list already. Otten was drafted and was best 22 at one point, Cheney we traded for as a best 22 player.

I think Gibson was genuinely in our plans for this season. He was in our round 1 team ahead of Greenwood, before he got injured and Greenwood came in as the emergency. And back then we were already playing M. Crouch, Gibbs, Sloane, CEY, Douglas, Atkins, Seedsman, Mackay and Hampton

I reckon we planned to use him as a cooler potentially to free up Knight.

Sadly whatever the plans were, Burton destroyed them before they could have ever been put into action.

I am absolutely shocked that you would use the recruiting of Gibson to have yet another shot at the club .

He was recruited as a back up midfielder/tagger.
We paid nothing for him as a delisted free agent.
He was hardly a burden on our salary cap.

The worst case scenario would have been he played in the Twos all season and provided some experience around our developing KIDS. The re-emergence of The SEED meant at best he was our third best wingman behind The RAT and The SEED.

If we hadn’t been decimated by injury and were a top four team, who would you want to replace The RAT or The SEED if they were injured in the finals? Kelly? Mackay? Hampton? or one of the KIDS?

Gallucci doesn’t have the fitness base after an interrupted pre-seaon, Poholke and Wilson are too slow to play as an outside mid in the AFL, Jarman makes Gallucci look like Usain Bolt, Signorello and Edwards have struggled to get a kick in the SANFL.

Your comments are like a person complaining that they took out house insurance last year because their house didn’t burn down, so it was a waste of money.

Disagree. I was happy to get him, he was worth the risk considering we were in our window.
He was never there to boost our flag chances. He was always only going to be back up for if we had a shit ton of injuries. We had them and he still played no part. I said it was stupid at the time, and hindsight shows that was correct.
