If Gilbert saw what was said about him over the past 23 rounds he’d feel pretty flat you would think. Now every comment in this thread will have nothing but glowing praise for someone who off the field in 13 seasons never put a foot wrong yet absolute garbage was put on him for far too long.

I believe you may have missed one giant off field foot wrong albeit not entirely his own fault.

On field I'm not going to put too much focus on his poor decision making and errant kicking after all that's the coaches fault for choosing how to use him. Was good at breaking the lines just wished they instructed him to hand ball it off more after breaking said lines.

Loved his sidestep, loved his passion, tackling and endeavour, loved his courage, hated his kicking.

A wonderful club and seemingly a genuinely good bloke, and in his pomp a super important player for us defensively with his height, pace and versatility .

Saddest part to this is that ‘not renewing his contract’ is polite industry talk for ‘delisted’. Not a stretch to think Gilbo refused to bow to the inevitable, and the club was forced to cut him.

Sad way to go in some respects, but Father Time had come for him, hard.

I hope he has much success in whatever he now does.

Yep and one of the game’s best tacklers, particularly back in his prime. Was very unlucky not to be AA in 09 and 10.

Gilbert may not have been the best player, but he gave it his all every time he stepped onto the field.

One thing that is forgotten about him is just how versatile he was. Played in the backline on both talls and smalls; was almost a premiership hero playing forward; played some of his best footy on the wing and could also go into the middle and tag for us; and during the twilight of his career was a good second ruck for us.

Thank-you for giving your all Gilbo!

Fantastic career , did what was asked of him, did not have the silky skills, (all cannot be a Harvey) but had a big Heart
and a lot of posters here should eat pussy for the rest of there lives, for all the Negatives

At his best was one of the best tacklers I've ever seen. Thanks Gilbo!

Stayed with us through thick and thin and always wore his heart on his sleeve even if the execution was sometimes off.

Cheers Gilbo!

What a star, could play in any position on the ground and people quickly forgot his impact in our 09/10 years.

Shame to see the abuse sent his way over the years by Saints fans looking for a whipping boy.

Having met plenty of players over the years he was a true gentleman and one of the best off field. Underrated for what he did when we were at the top end of the ladder as well. Good luck Sammy what ever direction you go in.

Good luck Sam all the best mate o/

Will never forget your 3rd quarter against the pies in 2010 GF1, screwed up their match-ups, kicked a critical goal, started the fight back.

Yes that’s my favourite memory of Sam!
I always had a bit of a soft spot for him. I went to a Saints sponsor dinner many years ago and he was seated next to me, he was very friendly and seemed like a genuine nice guy.

I am a big Gilbert fan. Gave his all. Played lots of positions (without complaints!!) , was flexible, very physical, kicking flakey....ok. But Courageous. Top club man. Will be missed. Always seemed to get the shit job. Playing the monster because there was no one else. Or the sneaky small forward again because there was no one else. And usually did well. Hope GC picks him up.
