St Kilda veteran Sam Gilbert will take to the field in red, white and black for his 13th season in 2018 after inking a new contract.

The 197-game defender signed a one-year deal this week after a consistent season in which he also spent time as a part-time ruckman.

“I’m really excited about what we can accomplish as a group moving forward,” Gilbert said.

“We’re disappointed not to be in a better position heading into the final round of the season, but the development of individuals this season will hold us in good stead for next year.

“I’ve enjoyed my role this season, playing up around the ball in the ruck, and also being part of a pretty stable defensive group.”

Chief Operating Officer Ameet Bains said Gilbert offered the club great versatility and experience.

“Gilbo is a really integral member of our playing group and offers so much on and off-the field,” Bains said.

“He has been a great ambassador for the St Kilda Football Club and continues to play strong football.

“His work in the ruck this year exemplifies his flexibility - he's always happy to do what is needed for the team.”

Gilbert was selected at number 33 in the 2005 draft and needs only three matches to join the distinguished list of 200-game St Kilda players.

After suffering an abdominal strain in the Saints’ clash against North Melbourne last Sunday, Gilbert has been ruled out for this week’s game at the MCG.

St Kilda’s ‘Mr Fix-it’ Sam Gilbert is poised for another big year in 2018, according to experienced key defender Nathan Brown.

After being restricted to 26 games between 2013 and 2015, due to a handful of injuries that threatened to end his career prematurely, Gilbert has fought back in the last two years, playing 40 games to revive his career in its twilight.

Gilbert, who in the wake of retirements at the end of last season is the oldest player at Linen House Centre at 31, has turned heads across the summer with his running and form on the track.

“‘Gilbo’ is just unbelievable,” Brown told saints.com.au from Geelong Grammar.

“He trains every session; he wins all the runs; never misses and trains really well. His ability to just keep on going is phenomenal.

“He’s another one that I’ll tip to have a pretty good year.

“He’s sort of been a ‘Mr Fix-it’ over his career – he can play in different roles all over the ground. I’ve loved playing with him and learning off him in the backline.”

At the back end of his second pre-season in red, white and black, Brown said new backline coach Henry Playfair has brought a fresh perspective on the game since arriving from Sydney at the start of November.

“He’s a different coach to what I’ve been used to over the years and that’s been great. I love learning from new people and getting different perspectives of footy,” Brown said.

“He’s fitted in really well and is going to be fantastic for not only the younger guys but for us older guys as well.

“He’s very good at knowing what to say about individual people and knowing what best to say to individual people and reading how they best learn about the game and what triggers them to play their best football.

“Even for me, we’ve had conversations about football that I’ve never even thought about. He’s going to be fantastic for not only the backline, but the whole group as well.”

Can’t wait for 2018 season.

Bit of a surprise that Sam was only named as an emergency player this week . I thought his form from last season would have meant he would have started in the first round . A bit surprised that Koby managed to get a game ahead of Sam.

Still looking forward to this season.

Sam played for Sandy in a practice match . Gilbert, who played as defender / back-up ruckman in 2017, was solid in defence for the Zebras and remains a versatile option for Richardson and his team.

Go Sainters.

Sam will be a big chance for a recall to the seniors for the game against the Crows. Although not sure who will be dropped because after the Norff game half the side could be dropped.

Go Sainters.

Gilbo didn’t play last week as he was the hold over emergency for the seniors. He must have been glad he didn’t play for the Saints after that team performance. He must be some chance for a game against the Crows.

Go Sainters.

Gilbo has been named as an emergency again this week . Hopefully if he doesn’t play for the seniors then someone else will be the hold over emergency player because Gilbo needs some game time after not playing at all last week.

Go Sainters.

Gilbo started off struggling a little against Cameron from the Giants . A couple times he fell over or slipped giving Cameron a couple goals . But in the second half he played well reducing Cameron’s effectiveness.

Go Saints
