Just heard Sheedy on TV talking about the "Coaches Champion's Medal". He expanded his thoughts to say that the best performing West Aussie in the Brownlow Votes each year should get a Sandover Medal. Similarly, for SA.

I agree with the idea. I was previously a WAFL supporter prior to the Eagles. I have been concerned with the devaluation of the prestige of the Sandover Medal ever since. I would even award a retrospective medal back to when the Eagles began. Remembering that this Medal would not necessarily go to the Eagles.

Does anyone agree? Who would have won these medals during this period. Obviously, 2000 Woewoden and 2001 Cousins. Peter Matera and Turley would have also in that period. Can anyone fill in the gaps since the inception of the Eagles.

Not wanting to lose focus from this issue but I have another point to raise. They are going to announce a WA State of Origin Team at the end of each year. This is also a great idea. Whislt they wont play a game I am sure it will be a great honour. Also, pave the way for future State of Origin Games which I greatly miss.

We in the West a very parochial and always feel we get a hard deal from the Vics. This is a chance to recognise our players.

GO EAGLES! GO SANDGROPERS!

Would this rule West Australians inelligble to win the Brownlow? I think that the Brownlow should still be medal for all AFL players, and the Sandover for the best player in the WAFL as it has always been. If youre going to award the best West Australian and South Australian, what about the best Queenslander, New South Welshmen, Tasmanian, ACt and NT players? What about the best player from Ireland? The idea has some merit, but it isnt that simple. And dont forget that in the past Victorians and South Australians have been eligble for a Sandover, and West Aussies and Vics for a Magarey medal. Maybe when they announce the State of Origin sides they can award a new medal for the best player from those sides based on their performance, but I dont think we should be taking the Sandover from the WAFL.

I also think that letting crowds attend the Brownlow counts is not a good idea and I hope the AFL doesnt really consider it. No matter what they do, there will always be some boofheads who make it in and boo certain players or whatever. Lets try and keep it as classy as possible, even if that means invitiation only.

They would still be eligle to win the Brownlow. Just that the West Australian with the most votes would win another medal.

I would still like to know who received the most votes each year in the Brownlow from the Eagles inception until last year.

The main point is rewarding the best West Australian in the National League.

The WAFL is now a second tier competition. Those who have won the Sandover in the last decade should all be honoured. But they are not the same quality as the previous medalists. A different medal should be struck for the WAFL.

Sorry, but I disagree. Players in the past who have won the Sandover still are awarded it for the fairest and best player in the competition. They are still quality players regardless if the WAFL is a second tier competition.

There are still many players in the WAFL that can make AFL grade, but are not playing due to salary caps and team lists.

Winning the Sandover does not make you a second rate player....
