Since the last exam finished at 1 pm it gave me enough time to drop by Richmond Oval to watch the top of the table clash between Westies and Centrals (I did my best at taking the stats
). It was rather a scrapy game, especially in the first half, but that was expected considering it was a very wet day and the ground was in very ordinary condition (especially centre square)
Ben Rutten: Ben started the game at CHF and did a couple of nice things in the first quarter, including a crunching tackle that even Michael Voss would be proud off. He missed a goal he really should have kicked as there was no real pressure on him. During the 1st quarter he did present and was rewarded with 3 free kicks. He was moved to FF at the start of the 3rd, where he set up Ryan Ablett for a goal that opened the "flood gates" for Westies. He spent a bit of the time on the bench. Finished up with 12 possesions and 1 mark.
Jason Porplyzia: Jason played all over the place but was primarily used across half back flank. As usual he was in amongst it. By my account finished up with 20 possesions and 4 marks. A lot of his possisions were off the ground but again that is expected on a wet day like today. He didn't use the ball as well as he usually does and he even managed to kick it out of bound on the full in 3rd quarter. A servicable game from Jason.
Ben Marsh: Ben played his first game back since injurying his knee against Hawthorn. It took him a while to get started and was beaten by his opponent in first half. Did some Marsh like things that we al expect from him
. However in the 3rd quarter he got on top in the ruck and helped his team turn a 25 point defecit at half time into a 6 point lead by 3QT. I couldn't believe my eyes, when Marsh showed a bit of a mongrel in him by laying crunching tackle. I wouldn't like to be the bloke that got tackled thats for sure.
Marsh finished up with 15 possesions, 3 marks (including a beautiful onehander on the wing in the 4th Q), 1 goal and 30 hitouts although a lot of them were ineffective. Marsh was also servicable without being spectacular.
Notes:
Salim Hassan continues his very good form for Westies. He took an absolute beaty in the 1st Q, a high flier backing into the pack. He has a fair bit of class and is areal live wire. Its a pitty he is 20 and may never get to play AFL footy. if I was Carlton's recruiting officer I would seriously consider this fella. He gets the ball kicks goals and has pace to burn. Doesn't mind the rough stuff either. I would definetly consider him for a rookie list spot next year if he is still available.
Ryan Ablett continues to impress me every time I see him play. He has a solid build, good hands and is a beautiful kick. Has got a bit of spring about him and is somewhat of a flashy CHF. He is 23 (???) but i did say somewhere that I would seriously consider him later in the draft. He does have the build for AFL and is a good overhead mark. He is also pretty quick for a big bloke. Played well in the wet today and had somewhere near 15-16 possesions took a few good marks and kicked 3 goals from HF.
BTW, for those interstaters Westies got up by 4.
