The least we could do.

Hi, I've just joined bigfooty.com to raise awareness my friend Nick Auden's fight for life. Nick is an old team mate at the Fitzroy Reds FC (he also played for the Singapore Wombats and Denver bulldogs). Nick is currently lobbying the big US pharmaceutical companies (Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb) to allow him access to a new trial drug that has the potential to save his life. Given I'm new to this site, I'd appreciate it if some experienced posters could do me, and Nick, a huge favour and post this message as many of most relevant bigfooty.com threads as you can (it will take me too long to do the 20 posts and work out which are most relevant).

Access to the online petition and further info on how to spread the word is at www.savelockysdad.com

We've had some great support thus far and have compiled close to 30,000 signatures in under a week, but we need more. Today, Nick received some much needed media exposure via The Age - http://www.theage.com.au/world/star...dens-plea-for-cancer-drug-20130905-2t6ry.html - hopefully it is the start of many (another version of the story will be in tomorrow's Age newspaper).

Many heartfelt thanks to people who take up this very worthy cause.

Cheers,

Benjy

With all the gloom in the world this just needs to be done.
The kids need their dad and it's the right thing to do.
Done!

Tweeted, liked facebook, signed petition.

Great to see how far they have reached with this with some celebrities retweeting this. It costs us nothing and the difference it could make to a whole lot of lives is immense. Very motivated and smart campaign. Don't sit around waiting to die, exhaust all avenues.

Done and I'll go again etc.
Of course one wishes only the best for the Auden family and other families going through such difficult times.

I can't understand though where one (individual/organisation/government) needs a petition to do what they should have done without one.
What exactly happens here and what sort of standards are applied?

The standards are that they can only provide the drugs in 'compassionate' circumstances-there are three criteria that he must meet. My cousin, who has MS at 19, has been going through something similar so that he can receive appropriate treatment.

He must be ineligble for clinical trials, have a serious or terminal illess, and have no other options. He's clear on all three counts, but unfortunately the pharmaceutical companies aren't cooperating so far--they're not releasing the drug past clinical trials at this stage. I guess the hope is that the petition will bring so much media coverage that they won't have a choice.

It's the hardest thing in the world to watch someone you love fighting something that you can't fix. I really hope that this gets the coverage and notice it needs to succeed.

Ain't that the truth. I lost my mother last year after battling for several months and now being told my Dad's got 3-6 months. If there was a potential cure waiting in the wings, I'd be kicking down that pharmaceuticals door. Good luck Nick and family. My heart goes out to you.

Done! My heart goes out to this family and any family that has hardships to battle through for that matter. Best of luck.

Sad Story, but at-least they have all this media attention to them. A lot of people don't get the chance to have their story told, and get to have petitions signed for them and facebook pages that go viral and tweets that trend worldwide with big stars backing them up.

But still, it's a sad story and I hope it works out for them.

I suspect that the reason big pharma is saying no, especially under all this media pressure, is the threat that if they did treat him, and he died anyway, it would sink their drug. You have to remember that these companies will put making a buck ahead of any human concern.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I know that everything I can say is going to sound trite, but I wish you and your family strength.

Roche and Glaxo will tell you who live, or not, or who cares.............

.....or create an hysteria for an out of date pill, that was a cure for a disease that didn't exist.

My father has Parkinson's, He couldn't tell you what he had for lunch, could still name the '62 Essendon Premiership Team of his head, god bless him, he lives in a home, and someone changes his underpants.

I wish there was a cure for everything. :thumbsu:

But both companies declined to provide the drug, which teaches the immune system to attack cancer, to Auden outside of a clinical trial.
Bristol-Myers Squibb cited safety concerns and Merck said it did not have enough of the drug to give to him.

I understand these companies do not want to set precedents but it was already set down for a clinical trial and WTF is a greater safety concern than DEATH?
