Fremantle has announced that Byron Schammer has agreed to a new deal that will keep him at the cub until 2007.

The 13th selection overall at the 2002 National AFL Draft, Schammer played 17 matches last season and earned the National AFL Rising Star nomination in round 13.

He has emerged as a damaging midfielder/forward for the Dockers in 2004, although he did not play on the weekend because of a shoulder injury.

Very happy with Schammer resigning.

While there has been alot of talk about trading him back to SA in a deal involving Carr, I think he has the potential to become a great player for us. While there is no doubt that Carr would be a good pickup, Schammer is only 18 and with the progress he has made so far, it would be crazy to trade him.

We could do with a used Carr, but I think Williams would be a bit of a shonky dealer. ;)

Not shonky mate.....we just wont roll over to no one!! And I'll give ya the tip our VC will not go easily.....If he was to go at all!!

Its either trade or lose him ala Nick Stevens

First let me say I am happy that he has signed.
But there was a comment in the paper that the last year or 2 years he could potentially be on 600k?
If thats true that is insane amount to pay for a midfielder.
Freo have made an artform of paying average players champion salarys...lets hope we havent done it again here.

3 years for a potential of 600k. So maximum of 200k a year... it is performance based, in 2005 anyway. So he could only get 400-450k if he doesn't play that well.

I think that is about right. That's about the average salary these days.

ah ok thankyou for clearing that up.
Maybe I just misread it.

wow great news, looks bad for josh coming to the dockers now though. shammer was really the only player that would be appropriate trade bait, port wouldnt give up one of their best players for pick 13 and troy longmuir :) they would prefer to let him go play for hawthorn for a year and get nothing

still, you never know what will happen, maybe a three way deal can be done somehow.... just seems really unlikely now.

And what do you think Port Adelaide will choose;) .....Just like Stevens if Josh did decided to do that to us....he could end up at Hawthorn or the Bulldogs for the next 3 - 5 years.

so I think he will think long and hard about it. As we all know, you can not say which club you want to go to;)

We also resigned Dion Woods and Ben Cunningham. This I dont understand. Both are fringe players at best, especially Cunningham and Ive been waiting years for him to get traded/booted from the club.

Cunners is a good cheap depth player that you have to have. He is still improving and he actually adds a bit around the ball in the clinches. He just needs to improve his disposal a bit more (He has got a lot better) and he will be even more usefull. Much as we would like to the Salary cap does not allow for us to have 5 Hazes and 5 Pavs.

I would imagine cunningham would be on a 1 year contract, and seeing our 3 mandatory delistings will probably involve at least 2 of doswell crowley and edgecomb its probably sensible to keep him around incase one of our midfielders go down. If the rumours about haines never playing again are true (re: dockerland) which would be a bloody shame, really our 2 backup midfielders atm are cunningham and browne, and after that rookies.

Woods, fringe? well i guess maybe seeing he is in and out of the team but woods is class, i couldnt imagine anyone wanting him cut from our side surely? Handy fringe player if you wanna class him that, handy starting player imo, just needs what alot of our side needs, a bit of meat on his body and a lot of aggression.

Later
