Schulz

29 possessions 17 marks.

His biggest numbers game no doubt about it
.

How did people see his game yesterday along with his overall progress?

I missed the first half, but 2nd half he was in the thick of it, offering a lot of support 3rd man up and was generally very good. Probably the most composed I've seen him as well.

I said it at the beginning of last season. Schulz needs/ed to string together 20-40 games in succession to show his wares. I think its beginning to show now.

Is definitely a keeper in my book.

Yes in a game that "featured" a massive 19 contested possessions....nope, trade him...a slightly harder, slightly less selfish but a lot less smart version of Bowden.......exactly the kind of dumb player we need a lot less of...:thumbsd:

If we are stupid enough to trade him based on the way he has played this year, you can be sure that it will come back and bite us on the arse big time.
He has had a fairly consistent season and is at the right age for a big man to start really taking control of games.
I for one think that he needs another 2 years and if he has a shocker next year then maybe delist him but with the improvement this year it would be a real shame to see another team get the benefit of the time we have put into him.

FFS, from all the players that have been shown the door over the stretch at tigerland, give us your take on who has come back to bite us on the arse.
Rodan came close.....Torna maybe...but apart from that...zero, zilch...no one
Sarge's stats at this time of the year are perfect for trade week. Add to that that he is "about to emerge", because KPPs take 48 years to emerge and we might be able to snag something for basically a player who you get 5 games a year out of, whether it be because of injury or form. ;)

I reckon he wasn't in the article cos Emma Quayle or whoever it was didn't ask to interview him, because he's been in and out of the side, up forward and down back. But I reckon with those four blokes we have the makings of a defence with a bit of height, a lot of athleticism and the ability to switch men or cover for each other at any time. They can all play small or tall. Schulz is the most skilled of the lot, even more than Moore. He hits his targets far more often than not, and he runs out of defence better than all of them.
I have to say I have turned around on McGuane. I didn't think much of him but I've fallen in love with his attack on the ball and man. He's a mongrel, and we need that. I still get nervous when he kicks but he's become pretty safe.
Re Schulz, I've only been to the Bulldogs game, where he played very well, the Hawthorn loss, where I was baffled as to why he wasn't put on Roughead when he was tearing us a new one (not his fault but Wallace's), the Dreamtime game (played well) and the Carlton debacle when no one played well. Nearly every other game I've watched on TV, where it's hard sometimes to know who plays on who. I was told he played on Roughead on the weekend?
Now that I'm back in Melbourne full time I'll be happy to go to a game with you: you can elbow me in the ribs every time he mucks up and I'll elbow you in the ribs every time he does something good. Let the ribs of truth decide!

You still haven't given me a list of who he's beaten. You'll find it hard though, because such a list does not exist. Everyone looks good playing the LMID role. Schulz is too slow and too awkward to play small, he's a tall defender (I use the term loosely there) only. On Saturday he may have gone back to contest against Roughead the one time Hawthorn went to him, but McGuane, and then Moore, squashed Roughead for the game. His early disposal was diabolical, luckily he got enough of it to make amends later. But generally he doesn't get it enough to screw it up, which is fortunate.

Where will Rance fit in, then? In Schulz's "spot", that's where.

Look, I'd be quite happy to join you watching Schulz this weekend and I'll quite happily accept every elbow for every dinky sideways or 15m kick he pulls off. But he's not a defender. Not even close. And if trading him means we could get a decent pick, or even Adam Thomson (a ball-winning, goal kicking 22yo midfielder), then we should go for it. Schulz is insurance only, a depth player. In a year's time he won't be in the side. If we're gonna get value for him, we have to trade him now.

Total nuff nuff Schulz. Turnover king early in game.
He turned it over once. The second bad kick went through for a point, so we got the ball back. The other 27 possessions went straight to a teammate.

Rance is 18. How many teenagers have been integral components of good defences? Dustin Fletcher, that's who.
As for McGuane and Thursfield squashing Roughead, you quite rightly pointed out that it was Roughy's teammates who kept him out of it by ignoring him. They kicked it to him twice! Once McGuane spoiled him and once Schulz did, as third man up.
As for dinky kicks, they keep possession and it's nothing Newman, Bowden, Thursfield and McGuane don't do either - and don't you see his 50m spears? Plus he's ferocious at ground level contested balls and with his tackling.
I can't give you a list of who he's beaten because as I said I've only seen four games live and on TV it's hard to tell who plays on who. Plus, he is not being played on the guns so he can hardly scalp them can he? He's either playing loose or being instructed to zone off his man, and he's doing a good job of it. He is being used on the way out of defence because he runs hard and his teammates know he rarely turns it over.
It's a team game and the defence is a team within a team. Everyone has a role to play and he is playing his. What was more valuable about McGuane/Thursfield's performances on Sunday - the fact that Roughead didn't get a kick (because it wasn't kicked to him) or that they helped Moore keep Buddy in check?
Will Rance take his spot? Maybe, in a few years. But from what I've seen he's not as good a kick as Schulz or as good a mark. Just because he was AA U/18 doesn't make him any certainty to make it. Cleve Hughes was AA U/18 three years ago and still hasn't made it, so I wouldn't be in a hurry to hand to an 18-year-old the spot of a 23-year-old who looks to have finally got over persistent injury problems, learnt a new role and is playing more consistent footy than he has previously.
Maybe in a couple of years time Rance will be a star and Schulz will merely be a depth player. If so, I'll rejoice. And if Rance, McGuane or Thursfield go down with injury I'll be glad we have Jay to step in. And so will you.

If he turned it over once then how did he have a second bad kick?
Can you only read the first half of sentences? The second bad kick was a pass across the face of goal but instead of hitting the target it went through for a point.

schulzy seems to have found his feet this year.
he is good across the half-back line. also can go forward and kick the ocasional goal aswell. we should keep him in my opinion.

he is on the cusp of being a good player. needs to add consistency - but i hope he stays on our list.

if he continues to work as hard as last sunday and can add to his engine - i think he can be a useful utility for the club - not strong enough to be a KPP player though - which is very disappointing

He has been named at CHF...I hope he plays a 'full' game (at least 80%) at CHF, and we can all revisit this thread next Sunday. What would you be happy with?

Considering it is CHF and needs to be compared with the top 8 CHF's!

And Astro...utility??? You aren't talking about the utilities that run around all day on the ball are you??

Schulz plays an occasional good game. He's got the ability but doesn't produce consistently enough.

There's not really a spot for him in defence with Thursfield, Moore, McGuane (and Rance coming through) and he does not kick enough goals to become a permanent forward.

Hopefully he plays well for the next two games and improves his trade value.;)

Shulz is becoming a top quality Backman. He absolutely destroyed Roughead on Sat and set-up many forward attacks. His attack on the ball is fearless and his enthusiasm infectious. From where he was last year he has made a massive improvement and will be kept, no doubt about it.

You mean McGuane and then Thursfield destroyed him:confused:
